Short ride on Metro to Capitol Hill

I stayed two nights in March 2005. A coupon was provided upon check-in that was valid for a beverage, which I used at breakfast in the small dining room on the first floor. Unlike with Best Westerns, which provide continental breakfasts, or Embassy Suites, which include full breakfasts, breakfast is not included at Holiday Inn (here, anyway). The room was satisfactory, and there was a taxi available at the front door with no waiting. I liked the feature that you could not enter the elevator without swiping your room card ("key"). There was a letter included in my check-in envelope that asked the recipient to please contact the Manager if we experienced any problems which would preclude the giving of a high rating upon departure. I took them seriously, called, and stated that I could understand the cafe being out of brown sugar for one morning, but for two mornings in a row, it seemed to indicate lack of attention. He listened and said that he would remove the breakfast charge from my bill. This hotel is a mere 6 blocks walk to the nearest Metro stop, so it is conveniently located. Even at rush hour, it would take only about 20 minutes to arrive at the Capitol South station. If I had to choose between this and the BW, I prefer the Best Western on New Hampshire Ave., where I stayed in Jan. 2005.

Well worth it

We stayed for 2 nights(weekend) Feb 25-27, and got a great deal through AAA. $99/ night including breakfast (up to $12.50/ person) for 2 people each day. Breakfast buffet was quite good and cost less than $12.50.
If you stay, be sure to join Holiday Inn Priority Club prior to going. This entitled us to a complimentary cocktail each. Also got us a room upgrade just for the asking. The room was big. The front desk staff was very kind as were the restaurant staff. Only drawback was pay parking--$22/ day. But given the good hotel rate is was worth it and very convenient. The neighborhood is very pleasant and felt safe walking from the metro at night. The hotel was well kept, clean and well lit. I felt upscale at reasonable cost. The metro is a little bit of a walk but not bad and it was nice to see the neighborhoods. In Spring it would be ideal. Definitely would stay here again and would recommend it

This hotel is not too bad

We ( a total of 5 people- 2 adults and 3 children under 12) stayed for 6 nights (7/27-8/02) with average nightly rate of $97.5 -- room only with no breakfast. We were worry where we could find any nice and not too expensive for all of us to eat. So, we walked on first day and looked around 2 blocks or so. We found the following:

1. Jack's Famous Deli -- 1129 15th street NW ( about 3 blocks)open M-F 6am-4pm. It has self-serve breakfast $4.49/pound like sausage links, scramble eggs, grit and gravy, hashbrown, potatoes and etc. Also muffins, donuts. For lunch, it has variety of sandwiches.
2. Subway's --- a few feet away-- serve breakfast until 11am.
This #1 and 2 are on your left side if you go toward Metro from the hotel.
3. "7-11" store --1400 Rhode Island Ave. NW
4. Hamburger Marys -- in front of 7-11
5. A huge supermarket called "Whole Foods" just one block on P Street ( ask the front desk) --- a lot of stuffs.
The Metro is about 5 blocks straight and at first seemed too far but over time it got used to it.
This hotel is not too bad with the rate that I got.
The restaurant -- I called in order to carry out so that I don't have to pay room service and delivery charge, but when I went downstair to pick it up,
they included the 17% room service and some other charges. ( the food itself -which was good-- only $24.90--with tax and charges I paid a total of $33.42)

It was not a bad experience -- unless you try you will never know.

Great Family Hotel

Spent a week at this Hotel during spring break with my two sons. Although it was spring break, got a great rate. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The room was clean, large and comfortable and the neighborhood safe. It is a little far to the Metro station, but I would stay here again.

Good quality high-end Holiday Inn

My husband and I stayed 3 nights arriving June 17. Like others said it is long walk to metro and the White House. Our first day we decided to walk to the White House thinking it is not that far-- and we ended up walking to the mall musuems and then back to the hotel. We did that only once as it was so hot and humid we just about died. But our room was large, quiet, clean, and with 2 sinks and sofa and quiet good a-c. The roof pool is small but it's a pool and clean and there is a guy as 'lifeguard'. No views as all the rooftops are the same height as the hotel. The hotel itself is quite nice for a Holiday Inn nice marble lobby and circular entry way. The hallways are wide and hotel is nicely decorated. The restaurant next door 15Ria in the Washington Terrace is excellent and also expensive. This hotel is a block or so from Whole Foods and a pharmacy. Breakfast buffet is good. The dinner didn't look appealing to us so we went next door and had a wonderful dinner outside.
We did take the metro the other days and the metro is easy but it is a long walk. Not like London or NYC where there are stops every few blocks. So you can't fault the hotel locatio entirely on the location. We also stayed at Georgetown Holiday Inn on this same trip and while the lobby and rooms were less elegant they did have a free shuttle to take you to the Foggybottom metro since that is the closet one to Georgetown which is like 2 mils from the hotel. So that saves some walking. See my review on that hotel and also Marriott Dulles Airport. We would definately stay at this Holiday Inn White House even with the long walks as it is a very good hotel. When we arrived only 2 of the 3 elevators were working and groups of youngsters so the first day was waiting and waiting for the elevators. But they fixed the other elevator quickly and with all three working and the groups gone, it was no problem. Nice front desk, good service, room cleaned on time. No problems. Nice experience for sure.

Good value for Money.

I had booked this Hotel early in the Year on the Holiday Inns Web site and got a really good rate ($95 room rate including Buffet Breakfast). The only downside is that its about 10 minute walk to the metro and theres not alot in the area in the evening. However Washington is a city were you would tend to do a lot of walking to see all the monuments and buildings so this wasn't really a problem. The Hotel itself was good, the staff very friendly and helpful and the room was comfortable as described in the previous reviews. I would certainly stay here again.

Okay, but too far to metro/restaurants

Stayed here June 8th 2004 for 5 nights. Room was very clean. 2 extra pillows. Hbo & Showtime on tv. desk/chair, small couch. Very noisy in halls. One morning heard people talking in next room. We were on 8th floor. Elevators very small. Staff use same elevators as guests. Elevators full several times. This hotel is ok if in town for convention but if tourist wanting to see the sites, I wouldn't recommend this hotel. To far to metro or restaurants. Me & my boyfriend about walked ourselves to death. Definitely wouldn't recommend to anyone with children.

A Nice Place to Stay

I enjoyed my stay at the Holiday Inn-Central. I totally agree with the other reviews on this hotel, as the security made me feel very comfortable. Included: Key cards needed to open exercise room doors and activate elevators. There were also security guards present on property, which gives you an extra feeling of security. The rooms are clean and well-appointed. Extra pillows in the dresser drawer was a nice touch. The TV includes full-cable, HBO, and Showtime. There is a gameroom, well-equipped exercise room, and a rooftop pool...all very clean and well-kept. Another plus: free washer & dryer access for hotel guests. A big plus when you need to get some laundry done. I did not get a chance to eat at the restaurant, but the menu offered quite a variety of choices and was very clean. This is a great hotel for families, and everyone on staff I encountered was very friendly and extremely helpful. I would definitely stay at this hotel again.

Very Nice

This is a very nice hotel with a great location close to the White House, area restaurants, and only 4 blocks from Dupont Circle and the Dupont Circle Metro Station. It was also very close to the Mayflower hotel which is one of the pick up points for the little red trolley tour. The parking is convenient and you must give your name and room number to enter the underground garage so you do not have to worry about anyone walking around the garage. Also you must have your room key to use the elavator so there is that extra feeling of security. I would price shop for this hotel since you can really get some great rates. I used the Entertainment Book and paid $82.00/night plus parking. I would recommend this hotel to anyone.

Solid Choice

I found a room here with a AAA rate of $74 per night. I was a little skeptical but after reading the reviews on this website decided to book it anyway. And I was not remotely disappointed. The hotel and our room were nicely decorated. It did not have an aged feel to it. It had a very warm and welcoming interior. The desk staff could not have been nicer. We had a dinner and breakfast at the hotel and found both to be reasonably priced and quite good. The walk to the White House and museums was easy. True, other hotels are more centrally located, but not for this price. I think the only negative I would say was that our room felt a bit small. I would definitely stay there again.

Top Local Tips for Washington

Gadsby's Tavern Located in Alexandria, you can dine inexpensively and deliciously in the same tavern in which George Washington ate. Plus, the tavern in open even when the museum is closed (Monday).

Washington DC MetroRail Excellent You can't beat the MetroRail for getting around Washington, DC. It is inexpensive - just $6.50 US for a one-day pass. The stations are clean and fairly well-lit. The trains are fast, although there are sometimes minor delays. Signs are plentiful and easiily understood for those who speak English. You can get just about anywhere a tourist or business traveler might want to go safely and easily on the Metro.

Walk then Ride Walk down 15th street to the museums, etc. if the weather is nice. It's downhill. Take bus or metro back.
