Top Local Tips for New Haven

Day trip to New York on MTA train If you want a day trip to New York take the MTA train from Union Station. It only costs $18 peak one-way or $14 off-peak. There's lots of trains from very early to late at night. Don't use the Amtrak/Acela trains as they are very over priced and don't save much time.

Driving is difficult New Haven, is the first planned city in European North America, but for some reason, the planning seemed to stop with the advent of the automobile. There are a lot of one-way streets around the central Nine Squares, but unlike most cities, they do not alternate which way they go. There might be several streets in a row all going one direction, or a steet might go one direction for a couple blocks and then the other for a couple blocks. One even has a block of two-way traffic inserted between the two directions! Parking is hell during peak times at Yale, worsened by haaving to go a half mile or more around due to the confusion in the one-way streets. New Haven does have pedestrian laws, but don't expect anyone to follow them. You are constantly in danger of hitting someone. Best advice? New Haven is a wonderful city to walk. Get a hotel in/near Nine Squares, take a shuttle from the airport or train station, and enjoy the stroll!

The Yale transportation Yes, there are taxis galore but get a schedule for the bus line from your student. Its cheap and they drop you really close to your destination. If visiting campus don't plan to drive around and find parking. I drove there two years ago and paid over $30 to park my car in public parking for the weekend. The campus is amazing and walking is the best way to discover all there is to see culturally and architecturally. A beautiful place.
