Top Local Tips for Telluride
Avoid the festivals! Telluride has a tricky way to trap tourists into higher rates, and this applies to almost every weekend in the summer months. Plan any size event for a summer weekend and call it a 'festival'--this allows hotels to charge higher rates. Fine if it is the Bluegrass or the Film Fest, but one weekend I hit the Cajun Fest, which consisted of 30 people paying $30 each to listen to bad music on the lawn up near top of Gondola in the mtn. village. Last weekend it was the mushroom (fungus) fest--you get the picture. Overall, a beautiful town with odd politics. They claim to be super environmentalist, but do not offer recycling and water and fertilize the huge golf course constantly. Also, dogs seem to count more than people here: much emphasis on letting dogs roam free in town. I love the rockies and always go back, but knowing that I will feel that I paid too much for lodging and services.
Don't rent a car There is an airport in Telluride but it is sketchy getting in and out. Most use Montrose, about 75 miles away, but easily accessible by car service. Once you are there, take the Gondola, it is great not to have to get in to a car for several days.
4 wheel drive tour up Imogene Pass this is a VERY fun - and educational - tour up to the old Tomboy mine and the Imogene pass. Gorgeous scenery, great possibilities for photographers, glad we did it. The half day tour is what we'd reccommend. Don't try to do it yourself - extremely difficult "road" to navigate. Go with "Telluride Outside" - Richard is the best guide we ever had on such a tour!
