Top Local Tips for Durango

A few things to do in Durango Take a ride up Wild Cat Canyon Road to Hesperus; it's a beautiful 45 minute drive. Eat dinner at the Ore House, it's an institution, very warm, and the best meat in Durango! Vist the Fort Lewis College campus if you have time, it is very nice and the views of downtown Durango near the chapel are amazing. There is also an amazing collection of HUGE paintings by famous local artists, Stanton Englehart in the Concert Hall.

Durango Silverton Narrow Gauge Rail Road We took our son on the Polar Express, and he LOVED it!! If it wasn't for the weather, we'd definitely make this outing a yearly event. As it is, we plan to return sometime in the summer to ride again. When we went, our arrival was delayed due to an avalanche that closed the road to Durango, and we worried that we'd lose our reservations (since tix were nonrefundable). The DSNGRR staff were very understanding when we explained our situation, and they changed our reservation without a problem. Great Service! Very cool train ride!

Diamond Circle Melodrama is great vaudeville entertainment At the encouragement of a friend that used to live in Durango, we saw both of Diamond Circle Melodrama’s shows. The first show we saw was a cowboy music review called "Whoop Ti Ay” show. The fast fingered pianist, Nehemiah Powers, is absolutely amazing in this show; his performance alone is worth the admission price.The second show, was a melodrama and vaudeville called the "The Spoilers.” The fast fingered pianist, Nehemiah Powers, was not so prominent in this show, but we enjoyed it just the same. The company overall was very talented, and highly recommended.
