I stay at the Oxford several times a year and love the old world ambiance. In fact, I'm here as I write this. In the last few months they have painted the rooms, upgraded the already-luxurious bedding and draperies, and added flat panel TVs to the rooms. The Oxford also has free, wireless internet. Many wonderful restaurants in the area.

Ghostly Elegance

I visited this hotel during the St. Patrick Day parade and had a bird's eye view from above the parade route. The room was nicely furnished and very comfortable. As an added perk, I was allowed my own chauffered car to anywhere within two miles which allowed me to get anywhere I needed in the downtown area. Great hospitality by the staff. I did have to sleep with the lights on at night after hearing that the hotel was haunted, but I had no ghost sightings.

The rooms are quaint, the service is first rate and the location is great! Our routine is to attend an event in downtown Denver (Rockies, Broncos, Avalanche or concert)and eat delectable oysters and seafood at McCormack's. The Oxford is a great park-and- walk site for all downtown activities. It always feel special to stay there.

This was such a great period hotel. Everything from the doormen in top hats to the martinis in the Cruise Bar were great. Service could be improved at the front desk. We were able to get a great rate for this hotel, thus we ended up with a smaller hotel room. I was able to sneak a peak at some other rooms that were much larger and grander. I loved all the antiquities in this hotel. The room was very clean and our bed was very comfortable. Wireless internet is available in each room. They also have a business center on the 2nd floor with 2 computers for guests to use.

I loved the atmosphere of this hotel. I will definitely be back.

Needs improvement

They called us to say we had two rooms booked. Still not sure why. Thought we had that cleared up but then when we checked in they had us down for 2 nights instead of one. Now we are trying to get a copy of our bill (which is 80% higher than the room rate they confirmed) and their accounting department is non-responsive. Not recommended at present.

The hotel was ok, but not worth the price. The room we got was quiet, but the bed itself was awful! Anytime my husband rolled over I woke up! I won't be staying there again.

Elegant building and fantastic service

The Oxford Hotel is a lovely building with a very elegant lobby. Our room was large and comfortable but let down by a tiny, below standard bathroom. The service was great but breakfast is not included making it a failry expensive place to stay.

I have stayed at this hotel numerous times. The Cruise Bar is fabulous and the staff couldn't be nicer. BUT this hotel recently sponsored an anti-gay fundraising event and I can't imagine ever giving them another dime!! What could their management have been thinking?

There are other great hotels (Teatro) in Denver - or in Boulder you can try the funky but beautifully situated Chatauqua.

I read the glowing reviews of the Oxford on this web site and was skeptical. As with many restored hotels I was expecting poorly patched plaster and some period threadbare carpeting. However, the reviews were correct. It has obviously had tons of money poured into its restoration to return it to its former grandeur. Everything was immaculate and the staff was exceptionally friendly and helpful. My wife and I booked the cheapest room, and we were surprised to find that it was certainly four-star quality. Its dimensions were about 20x20, with beautiful period-replica furnishings, a large flat-panel TV, beautiful bed linens and a very comfortable pillow-top mattress. As for location, it is right in the heart of historic downtown Denver, and there were multitudes of restaurant choices within a block or two. We had Italian for dinner at Il Fornaio (I had excellent rabbit), American for breakfast and Cuban for lunch at the Rumba Room, all within walking distance.
We experienced a few downsides to the hotel. First and foremost, there is a $21 charge for parking. Ouch! Second, it took about five minutes for the bathroom water to go from quite warm to hot. Third, a few spots in our bathroom had poor workmanship on the restoration; just cosmetics. Finally, each room lacks Internet access, with only one public computer on the second floor with Internet access.
That said, I would highly recommend it, and I would certainly stay there again.

We stayed here over Christmas 2004 and had a wonderful time. Our room was huge and the hotel staff so friendly. Great period furniture throughout the hotel, cushy beds, and large bath tub. Close to everything (Larimer Sq., 16th St. mall, great restaurants, and the wonderful Tattered Cover Bookstore.) The hotel offered a special holiday rate that made our stay not just delightful, but a bargain as well. I never wanted to leave.

I thought that this place was ok but nothing great. It has lots of character. Room was fairly large but in desperate need of updating;especially the bathroom. Bed was very comfortable. My biggest complaint was the noise factor from both inside and out. I was in an exterior room on the second floor so there was lots of traffic noise. I also wasn't that happy about hearing the room above me being vacuumed at 8 am. The staff was great - very friendly and helpful.

Overall - I would try somewhere else next time.

The service was very disappointing for the Romance package.

We stayed at the Oxford in September, 2004 for a special weekend getaway for our anniversary. We paid full price for the "Romance Package" which was supposed to include champaigne and a rose petal turndown service each night, and valet parking. The first night was lovely, with champaigne on ice, rose petals leading the way to the elegant bed. After that , everything declined. In the morning there was no coffee in the hall. Three calls over a 45 minute period did not produce results. That evening there was no champaigne and no rose petals. We relayed this to the front desk on our way out to dinner. Two hours later, still no service. Finally, champaigne was delivered at 1 AM after we were already in bed! Management offered breakfast service to make ammends, which we accepted. The food was delivered cold, with no condiments and cold coffee. How romantic! The voucher provided did not fully cover the cost of breakfast. The hotel front desk staff was rude and arrogant. They seemed incapable/unwilling to provide the service we paid for, even though our requests were courteous and reasonable. Other than the service and staff, the hotel was in a great location in historic Denver with turn-of-the-century charm. But, keep your expectations low.

We loved the Oxford! It is very romantic and unique. The furnishings in the room were beautiful. There was no bathtub so I would ask if there are rooms with bathtubs available if this is a concern. The shower was very unusual and neat. We were delighted with everthing...this hotel has so much character!

Top Local Tips for Denver

Cannot miss Although Denver is a beautiful city, it can be seen in 2 days. Rocky Mountain National Park is a must, prettier than the Canadian Rockies. Boulder, Vail are beautiful day trips. We never get tired driving through the rockies - don't get a sub-compact or compact car - you won't make it up the hills on I-70!!!

Denver was a great surprise!!! Given that the mint is a major tourist attraction, we showed up at 7:30am to get on the waitlist. It worked out, but it's better if you make reservations ahead of time. It is an AMAZING building independent of its service. Denver is a cosmopolitan area with great food, a high-energy feel, and a safe/clean environment. You can run, bike, see a play, catch a baseball game, shop, and eat cuisine from most any culture all in the same day. The public transportation is very user friendly.

Oxford hotel- great historic hotel with modern amenities take time to see Tattered Cover book store - one of the best in the country. Also check out the cruise room martini bar at the Oxford hotel. Art deco & very cool!
