Fantastic Food, Fantastic Service

We loved staying at this hotel overnight - we arrived at dinner-time, received fantastic, knowledgeable advice from the desk clerk(s), and were overall really impressed with the hotel, the staff, and even the parking situation. (We had just come from a Doubletree in Durango which cost more money and wasn't nearly as nice - and didn't have free breakfast.)
The breakfast service was the best we've ever had at a Holiday Inn Express - a greater variety of foodstuffs. We generally choose Holiday Inn Express for the overall consistency and quality, but this one exceeded our expectations.
After dinner, we stopped at the hotel-owned restaurant, and were very pleasantly surprised at the atmosphere and the full-bar. A visiting couple next to us said they had never had such good 'hotel' food before.

Like those below, I'd recommend this hotel...and if you happen to be there on a Friday night, try the next door "Conference Centre" which is actually a bar/restaurant very popular with the locals...

Me and my husband stayed here two nights, Oct. 15-16, to visit Mesa Verde National Park. The hotel is everything that the previous reviews state that it is. Pretty,spacious room. Good variety of breakfast foods with several hot items. Great indoor pool/jacuzzie area. We had a cooler with us and were able to walk almost next door on the same side of street as hotel to Super Walmart and get ice and food.

Stayed 2 nights whilst visiting Mesa verde.

Hotel and room were really good and the inclusive continental breakfast was superb. Good choice and more options than other hotels in this chain provided.

Very friendly and helpful staff.

Dinner at Zax's Pizza place was also superb - recommended by hotel.

I can't say anything bad about this hotel stay... helpful and friendly staff... beautiful decor and rooms, amazing indoor pool and jacuzzi area!!! We really felt like we were on vacation in some exotic location while staying here... we'll stay again when visiting Mesa Verde National Park... Don't settle for anything else but this hotel!

By now everyone knows this is the best place to stay in the whole southwest Colorado area. I will just add the opinions of my three kids who were so delighted with this hotel they would have happily stayed here their entire vacation.

Our kid's suite had a corner area with two sets of bunkbeds, a TV, game cube and a curtain to keep the parents out. Between that cozy area, and the nice pool, the kids were in heaven. We parents were happy with our little perks, too. The room was clean, comfortable and the front desk was helpful and efficient. We even got a coupon for a free drink at the bar/restauraunt next door. (They offered a great dinner) The complimentary breakfast buffet completes the positive experience of this hotel. You cannot beat it. Your 15 minutes away from the entrance to Mesa Verde, (which is spectacular), and 45 minutes to Durango, where all the hotels are much more pricey.

This is excellent for kids, of any age, and therefore makes parents happy too.

Great place for families

Our family of four (two teenagers) loved this Holiday Inn Express for all the reasons other reviewers have mentioned. The pool area was actually a little bigger than some which made it more comfortable to sit and read while the kids met other kids and had a great time! Be forewarned that while this is one of the closest motels to the entrance of Mesa Verde, it is a long drive into the Visitor's Center. I drove over to get tickets for the guided tours a day before our family went over and it took well over an hour round trip. BTW, we loved our meal at the Main Street Brewery. Something for everyone and delicious beer. A great time in little Cortez.

A Wonderful Hotel

My husband and I stayed at this hotel when we visited Mesa Verde. It was the best stay of our entire trip. The staff was exceptionately friendly. The room was decorated very charmingly and very, very clean. The breakfast of cheese omelets was super. I would definitely stay here again if I am ever fortunate enough to travel out west again. Thanks to the staff for making us feel very much welcomed!!!!

Very Best Hotel in Cortez!

My husband and daughter and I stayed at the Holiday Inn Express in Cortez for 3 nights in late May while visiting Mesa Verde and the Four Corners Monument. Our third floor room had a good view of mesas because it was facing east. It is advertised as a very clean hotel and it IS! It is soooo clean - which is the most important thing to me. The artwork, sculptures and tiles add an upscale appearance to the lobby and throughout. The furniture in the lobby is delightful. Be sure to check out the western couch upholstery! The indoor pool, while small, is cozy and lots of fun. The staff are very friendly and helpful. The only thing we missed was a local newspaper. There isn't a newspaper vending machine at the hotel and they don't give one out with each room. The free breakfast is great and offers much more than we expected with yummy cheese omlettes, bacon, muffins, english muffins, bagels, fruit, etc. And the lady who works in the breakfast room is a sweetheart. We highly recommend this hotel. It will be the ONLY hotel for us in Cortez from now on. For the low price, this hotel is amazing.

Top Local Tips for Cortez

Close to Durango airport The scenic drive from the Durango airport to Cortez is pleasant and doesn't take long. It is well worth the trip.

MESA VERDE TIP We had traveled to Mesa Verde twenty years ago, and no separate ticket was needed to view Cliff Palace and another featured dwelling - We found out a special ticket had to be purchased after traveling up to Cliff Palace, and we had to drive back down a good 10 minutes to the Welcome/Visitor Center (it does have specific name - not sure exactly). Ask upon entering, and the Ranger in the booth will let you know where to purchase the tickets for the super guided tours. I believe there are two or three tours; they sell out quickly on some days ... so get tickets early.
