City Bums to Greet You At the Door

from A TripAdvisor Member
We stayed at the newly renovated Crowne Plaza Ventura for 5 nights in December 2005. We had heard they were renovating and it was nearly complete. When we arrived @ 7pm, we unloaded our bags,(no bellhops), and entered from the parking lot to the front desk. know what they say about 1st impressions. As we entered, we were heard smashing sounds from the ceiling and front desk looked like a mess. Wires were hanging from the ceiling. The reception help looked like they had had a very long day. We were told the smashing would stop @8pm. Oh goody. We hauled our bags up to our room. We gave ourselves a tip. And then we decided we had to get some dinner. We headed out of the hotel and were promptly greeted by the many bums that hang out in front. We ran this gauntlet for 5 nights. On the positive side, the room was comfortable but, alas there was the AMTRAK train right outside. It took us 2 nights to get used to the horn blows. Well as you can summize, we will not be going back to this hotel again. Not recommended.

They Forgot To Renovate The Mattresses

from A TripAdvisor Member
We have stayed at this hotel many times, even before the renovation. We love Ventura. We keep coming back to the Holiday Inn because it is the only hotel right on the beach and because our favorite restaurant is right down the street (Marina Sushi).

Before the renovation it was very outdated. Now it has fresh paint, fresh carpeting, new room and bathroom decor, and new lighting. BUT...... I'm pretty sure they did not have new mattresses because it's the same HARD AS A ROCK mattresses that I remember from before. Every single time I have stayed here (different rooms each time) every mattress is rock hard. Do people actually like sleeping on these? The pillows were good though.

I've eaten at the restaurant on my past trips a few times and it was slow, cold, and small portions. I do not recommend their restaurant even though the breakfast is free with your stay. I did not eat there this time and probably never will again.

Don't go to this hotel for the pool. It's the smallest pool I've ever seen at a hotel and there is no spa / jacuzzi. They have plenty of room to renovate the pool area and make it much larger. Let's hope they have plans for this in the near future.

Go to this hotel because it's right on the beach and because there is a fantastic sushi restaurant within walking distance, and because you can get great rates, but bring your memory foam mattress topper with you!!

Enjoyable Stay and a Good Value

from merlhall
When we stayed there the hotel was being remodelled. The lobby was a little out-of-date, but our room was very nice. Every thing was clean. The breakfast was good. We were right on the beach. All for a good price (I think around $100/night). Saturday night there was a wedding at the hotel and our neighbors were pretty loud, but otherwise we had no complaints.

Not the place to stay if you want a good nights sleep!

from A TripAdvisor Member
We basically were looking for a place just to get a good nights sleep after long days in Santa Barbara and then out to the Channel Islands. Unfortunately the train tracks run right next to the hotel. There is an intersection there that requires the engineers to blast their horns several times. Numerous trains came throughout the night and it was really loud! Too bad, as the location of this hotel on the beach is very nice. The room was furnished well, but our toilet did "run" about every half hour both nights we were there. Staff was friendly and courteous upon arrival and departure. Our first and last stay at the Holiday Inn Ventura.

Wait six months...not ready for prime time!

At best, the hotel suffers from an extremely close and noisy freeway, the 101. The train tracks run between the freeway and the hotel providing a 24-hour soundtrack and frequent rumble. It doesn't matter which room you stay in...the noise is unavoidable.

Many of us have stayed in hotels that are being refurbished. However, this is not a place to go until they are further along. Workers constantly came through the elevators to floors that seemed completely gutted. The elevator as shabby and made horrible creaking sounds that frightened all of the passengers. The restaurant was closed. No ice in any of the machines.

The staff was marginally helpful and more interested in getting their money by cross-checking several IDs. (We are in our mid-fifties but treated like 18-year olds with fake IDs... sheesh!)

The room was horrible. The toilet was slow. The hair dryer didn't work. The carpet was filthy. There was a used tea-bag on the hospitality tray. The other items seemed shop-worn as well)

BTW: Don't believe the exterior shots on the website. The place needs paint badly and is much less attractive than their glamour shots of the hotel.

For $150 per night you can do much better.

Great location but noisy hotel

from A TripAdvisor Member
I recently stayed at the Holiday Inn for a 3-night stay. The location is excellent being right on the beach and within walking distance of downtown, and walking distance to the Amtrak train stop. The hotel is undergoing renovation but the rooms are all completed, and my room was very clean, furnished well, and comfortable. The only problem you should be prepared for, is it's extremely noisy. I expected the noise of the occasional train crossing, however whenever any rooms doors are opened or closed in your area, it sounds like doors are being slammed, perhaps the doors are too heavy. I was constantly being awakened during the night from neighbors coming and going down the hallway. There is a city plaza next door, and during my stay the city was holding an event with several bands playing for several hours. It was extremely noisy with the music from 4:00pm until 10pm, if you can imagine a concert happening right outside your door. The management didn't have the courtesy to advise the guests that this was taking place. I intend to inform the management of this should be common courtesy but apparently there was no concern regarding the noise.

Still more work to complete

from davidw70
Stayed at the Holiday Inn for one night mid-June. I'd read all the horrors of the refurbishment work on Tripadvisor, but was reassured by some of the recent reviews.

The hotel is converting to a Crowne Plaza later in the year; there still looks like there's quite a bit to complete. The lobby area, whilst presentable, looks like it has not been refurbished for years and, according to staff I spoke to, this will be the focus of the next phase of the refurbishment work. Whilst I was there, the only work being carried out was painting the outside of the building.

Upstairs, the work is virtually complete. The corridor leading to rooms was beautifully furnished, and the bedrooms all have brand new furnishings and look extremely good. The bathroom was a bit small, but perfectly OK. Best of all was the view from the room.

As a Priority Club member, I was given a voucher for a discount at the hotel restaurant. I had an excellent meal with very good service (if anything, slightly over-attentive service as the restaurant was quiet). Similarly for breakfast, the food and service were both superb. If you wanted to eat elsewhere, there's a restaurant opposite the hotel or it is only 5 mins walk to downtown.

Once complete, I will have no hesitation in staying again. The only downside will be the noise of trains as the tracks are close to the hotel.

s it!

Ok, so we went when they had major construction but that wasn't half the problem. Besides they should tell guests that there is MAJOR construction and renovations with tons of noise all day long!
Check in was a terrible experience. I guess because they really don't care about the guest. Our rooms were not what we wanted upon check in and we were basically told "tough luck."
The room was clean but not alot worked so we had to keep calling maintenance - toilet over flowed a couple of times, light did not work and other minor things. But most of the time they were disgusted that we called.
No towels were at the pool our entire stay and when we asked we still never got them.
Great stay with a surfing family. It is right on the beach.
Pool is okay but it is surrounded by the parking lot which is noisy and of course smelly!

We worried for nothing

I grew up in Ventura, so when we recently returned to visit my parents, we decided to stay at the Holiday Inn, which I remembered from my childhood. I read the reviews here and was nervous about what to expect but the deal we got by paying in advance was too good to pass up. Here's what we found:

The hotel grounds/pool were neat and tidy. The building itself looked horrible, but turns out there was a reason: they were just about to repaint the entire 12 story building and what we were looking at was a sanded and plastered pre-painted version. From the display in the lobby, looked like a new sign would eventually by mounted at the top of the building: "Crown Plaza". Not sure if that means it won't be a Holiday Inn anymore or not. But I think once the new paint goes up the building will look like new again (could be up by now for all I know).

The lobby had not yet been renovated but looked clean. I asked for an updated room and was told they were all now updated. We were given a room on the 9th floor facing South (no afternoon sun). The view was amazing. To wake up and walk out on your balcony to see the surf and smell the sea air felt like being in Hawaii. The room was very nice. The furnishings were clearly new and tasteful. They skimped in a couple areas like not replacing the tub fixtures, but overall the room looked clean and modern.

Having grown up in Ventura I was distressed to see a dozen or so homeless people that seem to pass their entire days on or near the beach (and hence near the hotel). That said, they were not aggressive and didn't cause us any concern. The ocean was full of surfers and we enjoyed watching them.

If you walk up California Street to Main Street, you'll come upon a dozen new trendy restaurants that have gone up in Ventura's downtown area. We were very impressed with the two we tried. It's not State Street in Santa Barbara, but to walk up and down Main Street and visit the antique shops after having dinner was a highlight. If you go to Ventura for a day or more, drive to the Ventura Harbor (about 10 miles away). It's a wonderful way to spend an afternoon.

So bottom line... I worried for nothing. We loved the hotel and it was an amazing value in our minds. I recommend this one for the ocean views, the nice rooms, the proximity to great restaurants, and for being a good value. 4 out of 5 stars.

My husband and I stayed here for one night as a mini vacation. We loved our room. The view was spectacular and the room was very clean and nicely decorated. The staff were exceptionally friendly and accomodating. The hotel is very close to the pier and especially the Derby Club for horse racing. We will definately go back again very soon. I give this a Five Star!

Top Local Tips for Ventura

Ventura & Ojai I loved both Ventura and Ojai. Everyone needs to visit. I especially loved Ojai because of the mountains and the quaintness of the town. Ventura is unique in itself with the beach and proximity to the mountains. It is a nice little town.

Beaches, beaches, beaches I love that Ventura's beaches are so clean and empty. In San Diego, you have to fight to get a parking spot and then you almost never find a patch of land that's your own. In Ventura, there are hundreds of little private spots to enjoy. Bring a picnic and the kids and relax. You can read a book all day or run on the promenade. It really is special.

Downtown The downtown area has a lot of things to see as far as architecture.
