City Bums to Greet You At the Door
from A TripAdvisor MemberThey Forgot To Renovate The Mattresses
from A TripAdvisor MemberBefore the renovation it was very outdated. Now it has fresh paint, fresh carpeting, new room and bathroom decor, and new lighting. BUT...... I'm pretty sure they did not have new mattresses because it's the same HARD AS A ROCK mattresses that I remember from before. Every single time I have stayed here (different rooms each time) every mattress is rock hard. Do people actually like sleeping on these? The pillows were good though.
I've eaten at the restaurant on my past trips a few times and it was slow, cold, and small portions. I do not recommend their restaurant even though the breakfast is free with your stay. I did not eat there this time and probably never will again.
Don't go to this hotel for the pool. It's the smallest pool I've ever seen at a hotel and there is no spa / jacuzzi. They have plenty of room to renovate the pool area and make it much larger. Let's hope they have plans for this in the near future.
Go to this hotel because it's right on the beach and because there is a fantastic sushi restaurant within walking distance, and because you can get great rates, but bring your memory foam mattress topper with you!!
Enjoyable Stay and a Good Value
from merlhallNot the place to stay if you want a good nights sleep!
from A TripAdvisor MemberWait six months...not ready for prime time!
from A TripAdvisor MemberMany of us have stayed in hotels that are being refurbished. However, this is not a place to go until they are further along. Workers constantly came through the elevators to floors that seemed completely gutted. The elevator as shabby and made horrible creaking sounds that frightened all of the passengers. The restaurant was closed. No ice in any of the machines.
The staff was marginally helpful and more interested in getting their money by cross-checking several IDs. (We are in our mid-fifties but treated like 18-year olds with fake IDs... sheesh!)
The room was horrible. The toilet was slow. The hair dryer didn't work. The carpet was filthy. There was a used tea-bag on the hospitality tray. The other items seemed shop-worn as well)
BTW: Don't believe the exterior shots on the website. The place needs paint badly and is much less attractive than their glamour shots of the hotel.
For $150 per night you can do much better.
Great location but noisy hotel
from A TripAdvisor MemberStill more work to complete
from davidw70The hotel is converting to a Crowne Plaza later in the year; there still looks like there's quite a bit to complete. The lobby area, whilst presentable, looks like it has not been refurbished for years and, according to staff I spoke to, this will be the focus of the next phase of the refurbishment work. Whilst I was there, the only work being carried out was painting the outside of the building.
Upstairs, the work is virtually complete. The corridor leading to rooms was beautifully furnished, and the bedrooms all have brand new furnishings and look extremely good. The bathroom was a bit small, but perfectly OK. Best of all was the view from the room.
As a Priority Club member, I was given a voucher for a discount at the hotel restaurant. I had an excellent meal with very good service (if anything, slightly over-attentive service as the restaurant was quiet). Similarly for breakfast, the food and service were both superb. If you wanted to eat elsewhere, there's a restaurant opposite the hotel or it is only 5 mins walk to downtown.
Once complete, I will have no hesitation in staying again. The only downside will be the noise of trains as the tracks are close to the hotel.
s it!
from skifamilyCheck in was a terrible experience. I guess because they really don't care about the guest. Our rooms were not what we wanted upon check in and we were basically told "tough luck."
The room was clean but not alot worked so we had to keep calling maintenance - toilet over flowed a couple of times, light did not work and other minor things. But most of the time they were disgusted that we called.
No towels were at the pool our entire stay and when we asked we still never got them.
Great stay with a surfing family. It is right on the beach.
Pool is okay but it is surrounded by the parking lot which is noisy and of course smelly!
We worried for nothing
from A TripAdvisor MemberThe hotel grounds/pool were neat and tidy. The building itself looked horrible, but turns out there was a reason: they were just about to repaint the entire 12 story building and what we were looking at was a sanded and plastered pre-painted version. From the display in the lobby, looked like a new sign would eventually by mounted at the top of the building: "Crown Plaza". Not sure if that means it won't be a Holiday Inn anymore or not. But I think once the new paint goes up the building will look like new again (could be up by now for all I know).
The lobby had not yet been renovated but looked clean. I asked for an updated room and was told they were all now updated. We were given a room on the 9th floor facing South (no afternoon sun). The view was amazing. To wake up and walk out on your balcony to see the surf and smell the sea air felt like being in Hawaii. The room was very nice. The furnishings were clearly new and tasteful. They skimped in a couple areas like not replacing the tub fixtures, but overall the room looked clean and modern.
Having grown up in Ventura I was distressed to see a dozen or so homeless people that seem to pass their entire days on or near the beach (and hence near the hotel). That said, they were not aggressive and didn't cause us any concern. The ocean was full of surfers and we enjoyed watching them.
If you walk up California Street to Main Street, you'll come upon a dozen new trendy restaurants that have gone up in Ventura's downtown area. We were very impressed with the two we tried. It's not State Street in Santa Barbara, but to walk up and down Main Street and visit the antique shops after having dinner was a highlight. If you go to Ventura for a day or more, drive to the Ventura Harbor (about 10 miles away). It's a wonderful way to spend an afternoon.
So bottom line... I worried for nothing. We loved the hotel and it was an amazing value in our minds. I recommend this one for the ocean views, the nice rooms, the proximity to great restaurants, and for being a good value. 4 out of 5 stars.
BEAUTIFUL AND RELAXING
from A TripAdvisor MemberTop Local Tips for Ventura
Ventura & Ojai I loved both Ventura and Ojai. Everyone needs to visit. I especially loved Ojai because of the mountains and the quaintness of the town. Ventura is unique in itself with the beach and proximity to the mountains. It is a nice little town.
Beaches, beaches, beaches I love that Ventura's beaches are so clean and empty. In San Diego, you have to fight to get a parking spot and then you almost never find a patch of land that's your own. In Ventura, there are hundreds of little private spots to enjoy. Bring a picnic and the kids and relax. You can read a book all day or run on the promenade. It really is special.
Downtown The downtown area has a lot of things to see as far as architecture.
