Perfect place for a getaway!

I went to the Viceroy at the recommendation of a co-worker. The hotel was fabulous. The decor is amazing....so different! As a person who loves interior design, I fell in love with the decor! We had drinks in the cabanas outside....so relaxing. Great service all around.

I stayed at Viceroy in Santa Monica over a weekend last June. Everything was superb- the rooms, the beds, linens...We had made all of these plans at other restaurants, but once we took a look at its restaurant's menu-- we decided to stay. Cameo Bar and Whist restaurant are total hot spots! Loved everything about Viceroy- can't wait to go back.

pretty good hotel overall

From the outside, this hotel is very lackluster. The immediate surrounding don't exactly inspire awe either.

However the room and insulation was great for the most part. The room service was respectible but the waitress downstairs at the restaurant were a bit snooty. The bathroom was definitely great. But hallways and hotel itself including the elevators were pretty dark. Wish they would have added more light.

The lounge is ok but don't see why it's so popular and the popularity can cause traffic in the entrance. A pain if you're checking in late.

The hotel is somewhat close to the beach if you're willing to walk a bit although nowhere as close as it looked like on the map.

Elevators were quick and mostly roomy enough. Water pressure was good. Bed was clean and comfortable.

Overall a nice hotel. Check the hotel's website directly. I got a better deal through that than through expedia, orbitz, etc. Obvoiusly your mileage may vary.

The Viceroy: Hip and Fun

I stayed at the Vicerot for 3 days mid-week on business. The decor was fabulous and my room was pleasantly sized and with a very comfy bed. The staff was extremely attentive and friendly. the bar gets packed fast, even mid-week, but the drinks are good and the people watching is better. I would stay at the Viceroy again (only request a high floor so that you can see the ocean).

Wonderful atmosphere

This hotel is all about atmosphere, and I think it's wonderful. I love everything from coloring to lighting (i e dark), from furniture to the cool music playing. My room was better than I had expected, with a very nice bed and bathroom, and the DVD-player a nice touch. The busy bar is great and clearly a place to hang out. For these things, I will surely return.

However... The buffet breakfast is a joke really, unless fruit salad is all you want, and I found the restaurant very overpriced (in-room dining was pretty good, though). Also, the pool is too small - I never saw anyone use it, and the fitness room is very basic - a couple of treadmills and little more.

It was not only the hotel which made us change our mind about staying in Santa Monica and leave early (staying only one night instead of the scheduled 3) - but also the hotel. Santa Monica was cloudy and full of tramps (unlike sunny West Hollywood where we had come from) and this did not agree with my wife. Furthermore, the hotel pool is tiny (much smaller than it appears on the website) and so we could hardly barricade ourselves in there. The interior design was great (very Wallpaper) and the restaurant was also nice in the evening – and we really enjoyed rollerblading past all the tourist traps on Venice Beach, but overall: one night at the viceroy is ample! Luckily, the staff were very kind and understanding, and let us leave without charging us for the remaining days which we had booked… and so we escaped back to the Mondrian.

Cool hotel, awful service

Imagine this... Versace buys a run-down Holiday Inn and redecorates it BUT he keeps the Holiday Inn staff.

Viceroy is a very cool looking place, the rooms are a nice size, the beds are good, even the towels and sheets will please someone used to 4-5 star hotels.

But the staff is 1-2 star quality. They failed on every attempt to address basic business needs like delivering packages, sending faxes, getting messages to people. When you're on a business trip this is just inexcusable.

To add insult to injury, the hotel is woefully understaffed - especially at night Thursday-Saturday when the bar and pool area are packed to the rafters with hipsters. Despite being a guest at the hotel for 10 days, I waited (with clients) 45 minutes to get a drink order. I eventually just went up to my room used the mini-bar and brought the drinks back down to the bar.

If you're looking for a cool place to hang your pants for a weekend, this could be your place. But it your looking for a cool place to stay on business, look elsewhere. And by all means, if you can afford Shutters, avoid this place like the plague.

Got an upgrade with ocean view coz our room was not ready even after checkin in around 3.30pm. Decent hotel, good value for money but watch the showers. Once u started to take a shower, the person outside the shower got a free shower. Water just leaks out of every part of the glass partition. Pool area was really nice and interesting, with cabanas packed to the brim.

Too Hip For Its Own Good

P. Diddy is at the pool bar. But my wake-up call is MIA. The entire advertising industry descends on this hotel en masse- everyone seems to be there on a shoot. Staff ranges from helpful to couldn't-be-bothered. The pool is chic and hip at night, but way too small to be useful during the day. Room service was good. But like most boutique hotels, you get a small room with really, really nice soaps. In the Viceroy's case, you may not realize the array of luxury bath products is actually for sale - they're not free. The hallways are so dark, it's hard to find your room. Great location though, across the street from the beach. And not as pretentious as some boutique hotels I've had to stay at.

The hotel is a really nice boutique property, and although it can seem a little too cool for its own good at night everyone seemed friendly all the time. My review is in particular about the Monarch Suites. They are great (very big, high foor, cool marble bath and tub). Fresh orchids in the room, a nice tough not often seen in modern hotels. The beach is right across the street and a nice running path runs all the way down to Venice. Everything was on par. My only reservation - the pool is located such that it is often shadowed in the afternoon and is thus not a very fun place to hang out after the early morning. No problem if you like to lay out on the beach. The property is designed with a very cool British-pop look; think Alice in Wonderland meets the Queen.

Top Local Tips for Santa Monica

Santa Monica sounds chic, but really isn't. I was looking for a luxurious getaway, and Santa Monica is a grungy beach town. Third Street Promenade is just sad- nothing but low-end chain stores and restaurants. The weather was terrible (foggy, grey, cold). Next time, we're staying in Beverly Hills where everything is pretty!

Chez Jays Great bar - worth a look in despite its unassuming appearance.

Boa NOT Lobster We went to the Lobster as its meant to be "iconic" with the views of the Santa Monica pier. The food was very poor and the service awful. We also went to Boa (new restaurant on Ocean Blvd) and had a great evening of fantastic food, good service and saw some famous faces.
