Great location, awful hotel

The Huntley in Santa Monica is very convenient to all that the city has to offer. But, the hotel is so poorly managed and run that the adage about location being everything does not count when it comes to this property. One gets the impression that mangement looks at guest services and amenities as a bothersome cost that interferes with the real business of increasing revenues. Want a cup of coffee before your morning walk or jog? Wait on line at the kiosk and pay for it. Want your room clean and hospitable? Try to sleep in a room that was prepared without appropriate supervision much less a caring attitude. Speaking of sleeping, bring ear plugs because the walls are so thin you hear every sound in the adjacent, above and below rooms.
There are much better places to stay (at more reasonable prices) in Santa Monica.

Wow! What a vacation!

I came to LA for my brother's wedding, and decided to make a vacation out of the trip. I was traveling alone with my two kids - 6 years and 9 months old; however, my parents and several friends of my family were also staying in the same hotel.

My flight arrived at 11 am; so of course we got to the hotel before check in time. The concierge asked if we wanted to have our luggage brought to our room and this gave us the freedom to find a place to eat lunch and explore the area. About a block from the hotel is 3rd Avenue Promenade, a street free from cars with shops and restaurants, my daughter enjoyed the dinosaur fountains immensely. The beach is about a block and a half away, and boy is it a beach!!!

At 3 pm, I was given the keys to our room (807) and was surprised that they had changed my room number. Wow! The room was huge, and the best part was the walk in closet where I could put the stroller and our luggage, close the door, and then the room was free for the baby to crawl around. Thank you to whoever realized that this was a great thing for the kids and sorry to the other wedding guest (possibly my parents) who got the smaller room, lol. The renovations in the hotel seem to be complete, I spent several afternoons in the room (for baby's naptime), and did not hear any loud construction going on. The first day I stayed there, the mini-bar knocked on the door and woke up the baby, but after I explained that we weren't going to take anything from the mini-bar and my baby naps in the afternoons, noone bothered us again. The rooms are beautifully furnished.

The first day and the last, we walked along the beach to the pier. It is very hot out there, but absolutely worth it. If you have small children don't miss out on the Aquarium underneath the boardwalk.

The hotel provided a crib which was slightly damaged. But after one call to the front desk, a new crib was in the room by the time I had returned from dinner. The front desk and all the staff members I encountered were very helpful and friendly. The restaurant staff upstairs could use some more training at breakfast time.

Love It!

from coopersmom
We stayed 2 nights at the Huntley in Feb 06-went for my 16 yr old daughter's bday. We felt like celebrities! Toppers, their rooftop restaraunt was delicious-both breakfast and dinner-with an awesome view and great happy hour. Staff was very accomodating-offered ideas and gave excellent directions and suggestions. Girls in the coffee shop were also very helpful and friendly. Car was delivered promptly, as was bell service. Only complaint was that there were major renovations going on on the 3rd flr-we were on the 4th. This started in every day at 9am. We were usually gone by then, and it was finished by the time we got back, so it didn't really inconvenience us too much.

The rooms were quite spacious, extremely clean with nice ammenities and awesome 42" plasma TV. Most comfortable bed I've ever slept on! Even my hard to please teens were impressed with this hotel! Would most definitely stay here again.

Loved it!!!!

from LJA26
I stayed at the Huntley Santa Monica for 4 nights over New Years 2005 and it was great!!

The rooms were spacious and modern, with the biggest most comfortable bed I have ever slept in. They also had a HUGE plasma TV on the wall where you could watch your own DVD's - nice touch!

The bathroom was nice and bright with the most amazing shower in it, Molten Brown goodies (the ladies will appreciate this) and bathrobe and slippers.

The hotel was in a good location - it was a quick walk to loads of restaurants (PF Changs was good for Chinese) and it is not too far to drive to Universal Studios.

The little shop in the lobby was great if you just wanted a light breakfast of tea and a toasted bagel - the staff were really friendly and they served proper breakfast tea (an important point for an English person!!)

My one complaint was the valet parking - the hotel was expensive enough and we then had to pay extra for valet (although it was nice and easy the way you could just drop your car off, we resented the "hidden extra").

All in all, I would defintely recommend this hotel. We were sorry to leave it.

Loved the Friendly and Service Oriented Staff

We have stayed in the hotel three times and will not hesitate to go there again. The rooms are very tastefully decorated, nice and comfortable, the place is beautiful for either a restful getaway or a romantic anniversary celebration. It is also only one block walk to the beach, which makes it easy for a walk in the morning prior having breakfast or an easy stroll in the afternoon.

The rooftop restaurant serves excellent food, and good service, while enjoying a delicious meal in a relaxed atmosphere, one can enjoy the scenery too.

It is also very close to very nice local shops and boutiques. All in all a very excellent and unforgettable experience.

Unbeleivabley Great Experiance

Staying at the Huntley Santa Monica was a great experiance. The location of this hotel is great, close enough to the Los Angeles down town at the same time a wonderful feeling in being a block away from the beach with great Ocean view and panoramic view of Los Angeles.
This hotel is two minutes walk to the promenade on 3rd street which has become a hot spot of los Angeles with many attractions and a very trendy crowd.
This hotel has very tastefully remodeled rooms with 42" plasma TVs and one of the most comfortable beds that I have slept in. Some of the rooms are as good as suites with great ocean views huge closets and bathrooms which makes the stay in this hotel a great experiance. The staff are very courtious and friendly who welcome you very pleasently and will attend to your needs with great efficiency. The rooftop resturant is a unique treat day or night. I give this great and unique hotel 5 stars and highly recommend it for a business trip or vacation with the family.

Loved the Modern Decor at Huntley

from PinkChic
This was the last stop off on honeymoon before flying out and we enjoyed it the most( we had stayed in Sheraton Anaheim and the Luxor in vegas prior to Santa Monica). The plasma TV was fantastic and the modern decor of the rooms and the lobby were lovely. And the bed was big and very comfortable!!! definately recomend this hotel and if we ever get back to the States we will stay here again!!

Great room!

from Lpanz
The room was beautifuly decorated and very clean. There was a 42" plasma mounted on the wall which my husband loved. The proximity to the 3rd Street Promenade and the water is great. Just one block from both. Would definately stay here again.
Had breakfast on the top floor restaurant and was very pleased. Valet parking was $18/night which I thought was a bit much, but got a pretty good price on Hotels.com which made up for that.

I am going back this week - that should tell you something.

from emd1
I know Santa Monica hotels very well as I have stayed there often (4-5 times a yr. for a week or more at a time) over the past 10 yrs. On my trip last week I decided to give the Huntley a try, since it has been newly renovated and upgraded from when it was a Raddison. I had checked it out when it was a Radisson and did not stay there as it seemed dumpy to me. But the location is so great that I decided to give it a whirl.

Let me get this out up front - the hotel is not perfect. But then, what is in Santa Monica? There are higher priced hotels right on the beach but they are further from the happening area of 3rd St. Promenade and downtown Santa Monica. What I appreciated is that when I had problems, the staff took them very seriously and corrected them to my satisfaction, and they followed up w/me too.

The Good:
1) Location, location, location. After a day of work or sightseeing in LA, who wants to sit in their room at night. Here, you can walk 3-5 min. and go to one of about 30 restaurants, shop, people watch.
2) Great new decor. Cool lobby area. Loved the room. Classic style, not too trendy but just cool enough and relaxing colors of gold, green, deep beige, white, black. Bathrms. small overall (big enough only for one person at a time) but nice tan marble and big walk in showers (no tubs; this is not a hotel for those w/small kids). Nice lighting in the room, w/dimmer adjusters on table lamps.
3) That nice big 42 inch plasma TV on the wall. I stayed at a hotel right after this one with a regular TV and it was such a let down.
4) Comfy bed w/great Italian linens and cushy pillows.
5) Some rooms like mine (double queens) have big walk in closets with a dresser in the closet. Easy to use safe also, which I used daily.
6) Great bar on the 18th floor. WOW sunset views, and good happy hour food specials and drinks. I did not try the restaurant, but it also has a great view on 18th floor (and it was busy each night I went to the bar).
7) Room service 24 hrs with very good variety and number of offerings at each meal.
8) Valet parking is quick and easy for both drop off and retrieval. Typical fee for most good Santa Monica hotels.
9) Staff is friendly and knew my name and responded to me. They never blew me off and or had an attitude. This is very imprtant in a hotel in the L.A. area.
10) Nice touches for busines traveler in the rm., like plugs on the base of the table lamp and desk lamp, so no struggling to find outlets.
11) Very good high signal wireless access (for a fee, but that is better to me than a no-fee low signal access.)
12) Rooms on 3 sides of the hotel have some ocean view. Mine was a side view but the ocean part of that view was just a block away.
13) Quiet rooms. I am a light sleeper and frequently have trouble w/noise. I was not far from the elevator in this hotel and I slept great, heard no "dings" at all. I see someone noted the clicks when the AC kicks in but that didn't bother me. Could not hear people in the adjacent rms.
14) Heavy drapes that block out the sun to sleep.
15) Sony dream machine CD player clock radio w/great radio reception. DVD player (did not use it).

The Bad:
1) This is an old building and although they have done a great job renovating, the infrastructure is old. The plumbing is great, no problem with water pressure or hot water. But the AC is a problem on higher floors. I was on 17th floor for 2 nights and my rm. was stifling hot, 80 degrees. Engineer came each day and did something to bring it down to 76 but it went back up. Moved to 16th floor, no better. Ended up on 12th floor; it was cool and fine there. Once I got in the 12th fl. rm., the desk clerk called to make sure I was happy.
2) Hallways on 17th floor are not yet renovated, but I was told that this is the only area not renovated.
3) Room Service kinks. One morning it took an hr. When I complained, they gave it to me free. Another time I was charged the wrong price (significantly, like $20 over). When I called down after realizing it, they corrected it and brought me the incorrect bill to rip up. The food was good (breakfast each day and dinner two nights) and they did correct the problems.

Overall, it was a good, relaxing experience. The staff cared about my stay. I am going back for another 7 nights this week.

Huntley is pretty sweet

from A TripAdvisor Member
I just stayed there for the third time. I really like this hotel. It is easy to walk to everything in Santa Monica...3rd St. Prominade, shops, restaurants, one block from the beach. There's a Starbucks a block away, which is nice. The rooms have flat screens on the wall, plenty of space and the beds are comfy. Close to a yoga studio I love. Easy to park and get in and out of.

Last time I was there it was still run by Radisson. They changed the carpet and some design/decor elements, and have made it a little more 'hip'.

Probably will stay there for all my LA trips (if the co. wont put me up in the 4 Seasons) All in all, its pretty sweet.

ever!

Overall a fabulous hotel. The decor of the lobby is kind of a retro 60's/African combination. It is a little funky, but don't be fooled. The room I had was a great ocean view (about a block off of the beach). You are about a two block walk to the Promenade and all sorts of shopping. I really LOVED all of the special touches they offer. Designer soaps and shampoos, Krispy Kreme donuts for a morning welcome, LA Times and Large Flat Screen TVs in every room. The rooms themselves are ok, but the bed linens are also very nice. For its proximity to the beach and "special touches" I think that this is a great value!

Not great...

from tenniscandi
I can't give The Huntley bad reviews because I would stay there again. I would classify this hotel as a moderately chic boutique hotel, not child friendly and still undergoing renivations. The service was good as well as the amenities (bath products and full blow dryer). We had a corner room which was a little bigger than average. The plasma on the wall allowed more storage space on the counter. The bathroom was pretty small and our drain was VERY slow. They deliver Krispy Kream donuts to your room only the first night - they should deliver them every night. My husband went downstairs to read the paper (which was delivered to our room) and found nowhere to sit. The lobby, although chic looking, is not practical and the only chairs to sit in are solid wood without cushions. There are lit candles all over the lobby which is great atmosphere but concerned me with my child. The rooms have great towels and sheets but they do not have coffee pots in the rooms! I found the hotel to be very loud - not just the morning construction but also the people coming and going to the upstairs bar. Overall, I think we paid a little over $200/night because we were there for a wedding and I wouldn't pay much more than that. I think the location is perfect - for that reason I would return there.
