Great location, awful hotel

The Huntley in Santa Monica is very convenient to all that the city has to offer. But, the hotel is so poorly managed and run that the adage about location being everything does not count when it comes to this property. One gets the impression that mangement looks at guest services and amenities as a bothersome cost that interferes with the real business of increasing revenues. Want a cup of coffee before your morning walk or jog? Wait on line at the kiosk and pay for it. Want your room clean and hospitable? Try to sleep in a room that was prepared without appropriate supervision much less a caring attitude. Speaking of sleeping, bring ear plugs because the walls are so thin you hear every sound in the adjacent, above and below rooms. There are much better places to stay (at more reasonable prices) in Santa Monica.

I came to LA for my brother's wedding, and decided to make a vacation out of the trip. I was traveling alone with my two kids - 6 years and 9 months old; however, my parents and several friends of my family were also staying in the same hotel. My flight arrived at 11 am; so of course we got to the hotel before check in time. The concierge asked if we wanted to have our luggage brought to our room and this gave us the freedom to find a place to eat lunch and explore the area. About a block from the hotel is 3rd Avenue Promenade, a street free from cars with shops and restaurants, my daughter enjoyed the dinosaur fountains immensely. The beach is about a block and a half away, and boy is it a beach!!! At 3 pm, I was given the keys to our room (807) and was surprised that they had changed my room number. Wow! The room was huge, and the best part was the walk in closet where I could put the stroller and our luggage, close the door, and then the room was free for the baby to crawl around. Thank you to whoever realized that this was a great thing for the kids and sorry to the other wedding guest (possibly my parents) who got the smaller room, lol. The renovations in the hotel seem to be complete, I spent several afternoons in the room (for baby's naptime), and did not hear any loud construction going on. The first day I stayed there, the mini-bar knocked on the door and woke up the baby, but after I explained that we weren't going to take anything from the mini-bar and my baby naps in the afternoons, noone bothered us again. The rooms are beautifully furnished. The first day and the last, we walked along the beach to the pier. It is very hot out there, but absolutely worth it. If you have small children don't miss out on the Aquarium underneath the boardwalk. The hotel provided a crib which was slightly damaged. But after one call to the front desk, a new crib was in the room by the time I had returned from dinner. The front desk and all the staff members I encountered were very helpful and friendly. The restaurant staff upstairs could use some more training at breakfast time.
