Very quite, convenient self parking, convenient location. Very cozy beds with
nice sheets, great smelling aveda bath roducts. Only downside is the lack of
real room service - I didn't enjoy any of the meals I ordered. The breakfast
buffet is in a pleasant room, coffee and fruit were good, but the pastries were
inedible. All the staff were easygoing and helpful. I will go back - had an overall good experience

Beautiful hotel, fantastic decor and friendly people. Quiet location, but handy for Santa Monica. Worth another visit. Very reasonably priced. Nice Aveda toiletries.

Historical Traveller Reviews of The Ambrose Hotel

What a great hotel!!!

from A TripAdvisor Member
I chose the Ambrose Hotel based on the reviews and boy was it great!!!! Just like others said, very quiet, clean, beautiful atmosphere. The minute you walk in you feel like you are in a Spa..very relaxing, very nice staff. It was probably one of the most relaxing hotels I have ever stayed in and I have traveled a lot for business. Just overall..the best night sleep I have ever had in a hotel. A must stay! Some hotels you feel cheated because the website looks so nice and then you arrive and blah..nothing like it looked on the web. Not the case looks exactly like the website and more!!

Shangri-la in Santa Monica

The Ambrose is an excellent property. Great location and beautiful design. Unfortunately, the room I was assured I would get was not available. However, the staff was very accomodating and gave me an extremely late check out on my last day. Spend the money and get a Premier Studio with a terrace. If you're lucky (I wasn't), get one of the two with fireplaces. Overall, I was very pleased and would highly recommend this hip little L.A. hideaway.

Lovely place, a few rough edges, very tranquil

I stayed at the Ambrose for 3 nights when my college age son was admitted to nearby St. John's through the ER. After a harrowing evening of delayed flights and missed connections from Kansas City, I arrived at the Ambrose at 1 AM. My room was an oasis of peace and I slept as well as could be expected knowing I needed to be at the hospital by 7 AM for his next test. The linens were wonderful.
The continental breakfast was superb - like brunch at a fancy restaurant. The dining space took a little getting used to, not the usual room full of tables and chairs, but it worked out fine. They provided me with a CAT-5 cable for their free hi-speed internet access, since I had forgotten to bring one. Since it was a last minute trip, the internet access was invaluable - I even booked my two remaining nights at the nearby BW Gateway and extended my return flight online from my room. I was also able to login to my company's network and handle some unfinished work. I really missed this when I moved to the BW!

I had a few glitches - no room service menu in my room, and no hotel services information book or card. Overall, it was extremely comforting to have such a fabulous room waiting for me after visiting my son in the hospital all day. They do have a reduced hospital rate and it is as close as the BW to the hospital, and infinitely more restful. If you're only going to be there a couple of days, it's well worth the extra money.

You're not on the ocean, but if you want a restful place to stay, this is it.

Wonderful Hotel

from SFAnonymous
The Ambrose is a wonderful hotel. I've stayed in many hotels in the last year throughhout the country and in Los Angeles, including the Fairmont Miramar in Santa Monica. I prefer the Ambrose over the Fairmont and other hotels in the L.A. area because when I was at the Ambrose I didn't get that Hotel Feeling -- the feeling of staying in an overly synthetic, corporate branded place. The rooms are genuinely, solidly and warmly comfortable and offer high quality bedding (cottons) and toiletry items (Aveda), comfy bathrobes and extra cotton blankets. The honor bar/fridge is stocked with healthy items, like Naked Juices and tonics. The rooms are also stocked with Pacifica skincare products, which must be purchased but are well worth the extra dough it if you want to treat yourself. The hotel offers free parking and is conveniently located. (I am from L.A. and know how to get around the area). Room service food is provided by Drago which is one of the best restaurants in L.A. I stayed at the hotel in a "Premier Room"(which did not have a balcony) from April 30-May 2 and I enjoyed myself there. The staff was friendly but could benefit from more experience and training.

Disappointed, but still nice

from Beecat
This is a lovely-looking small hotel, near St. John's Hospital and medical centers. The linens and decor are high quality and the breakfast is nicely done. Beware though when booking a "deluxe King Suite" or anything purporting to be "better." They do not have any suites (even minisuites), and the rooms themselves are very small. The bathrooms are huge. The balconies on the 3rd floor are very narrow and inferior to others on the lower floors, and there is nothing different in the room except the direction it faces to make it called "deluxe". It is about 4 miles to the beach. We had booked a longer stay to rest and read, but loud rock music blared in the common areas. The staff was adequate but very youthful and not very accommodating. So, we moved to The Oceana, a boutique suite hotel on the ocean promenade that has charm, roomy spaciousness, proximity to everything and a nice Cannes-type environment. The Ambrose is still great if you want just a room, but expect a lot less than you see on their lovely website. You can do better, albeit for a little more money.

Great facility. Poor Staff.

Beautiful hotel. Great decor. We could heartily recommend this hotel if not for the untrained staff. We are not overly-demanding customers, but the staff at this hotel could not accomodate simple requests and seemed not to care. One example: We requested a "premium" room and paid an extra $10 per night for this. When we arrived, we were checked into a standard room and had to talk to three people to get them to reduce the room charge to their standard rate.
As mentioned in other reviews, this hotel is not near any Santa Monica attractions. This was fine with us, as the Los Angeles area demands driving to go anywhere. However, if you're looking for a long weekend of walking to the beach from your hotel, you should look into other accomodations.

Pleasant stay at the Ambrose

from A TripAdvisor Member
The hotel is very nicely decorated, super clean, and quiet. The room was a bit small, but comfortable. The complimentary breakfast was good quality.I was led to believe that the premium rooms have terraces, but not all of them do. We got a room with a very narrow balcony instead.
The hotel is non-smoking, which was very pleasant. Overall, the experience was positive: I just left felling like I wanted a bit more for the money.

I love this place

from A TripAdvisor Member
This place made us feel at home the moment we arrived- the zen atmosphere, quiet neighborhood, luxuriously appointed rooms, well equipped gym, lovely private veranda and NO SMOKING permitted. Ahhhh. I have been a southern Californian most of my life and now that I am just a visitor have been looking for a place just like this for awhile...close enough to the airport, walking distance to shops and restaurants, a long walk to the beach but still possible, and a safe and restful environment. I LOVE The Ambrose! Our new home away from home.

Good alternative to Tourist Hotels

from A TripAdvisor Member
Our family of 4 recently stayed at the Ambrose for 3 nights based on the good reviews posted on this website. We had a basic room with 2 double beds, rather small, but adequate. Nicely decorated overall. Hair dryer is provided, bath soaps, lotions and towels were all of good quality.

The room overlooked a main street, Santa Monica Ave., so there was some street noise, but in general the room was fairly quiet. The best things about the hotel are the free parking underground and the continental breakfast that is included in the room rate. Those 2 features more than make up for the location, which is 17 blocks north of the Promenade.

There is no hotel restaurant on site, but there are a number of decent choices, both low and high end within a 3 to 4 block walk. We arrived late on a Friday night and walked up Santa Monica Ave. to 23rd St. and had a nice Italian meal at The Bistro.

Overall, we had a very enjoyable stay.

t stop gushing about The Ambrose Hotel

My husband and I stayed at The Ambrose Hotel for 2 days just before Christmas '03 and what a relaxing treat. I wouldn't call ourselves seasoned travelers, but we have stayed in our share of hotels. The hotel is a little ways from the beach (not walking distance) but is located in such a quiet area. All the little things made such a difference. The comfortable bed, the down comforter, cotton throws, the in-room DVD player. My husband and I were beat after flying in from a hectic pre-Christmas week and we wanted to relax before heading out to Santa Monica. We opened the window slightly, could hear the water fountain outside. We turned on the radio (with surround sound) to a wonderful jazz station and fell asleep under the cozy throw blankets provided. It was pure bliss. The extra treats such as the cordless phone, great snacks (honor bar), and sumptuous bath robes made all the difference. Staff was great, room was small - but with all the little amenities, we didn't care! Parking is FREE, convenient. This was the first time I didn't want to leave the hotel! A wonderfully relaxing place to stay!
