Nice but needs Re-furbishment

Nice hotel with some real nice touches - great bathrooms, great beds and nice staff but so so expensive for what it offers. The carpets are worn out and the doors and a lot of the furniture are old ( not antique old but just worn out !) Needs to be re-furbished. And $9 for a bottle of water and no coffee facilities is just mean considering room price.

Reading some of the recent reviews in on this site, I would have thought Shutters had lost it. I used to stay there all the time, on frequent trips to Santa Monica for business, but I hadn't been in a while. Let me say that I was not disappointed. The worst thing that could be said is that the rooms are a little bit worn - they could do with some new carpeting, some new tiling in the bathroooms, etc. But the service was outstanding, from the lobby lounge, to room service, to the front desk and concierge. The rooms themselves were very comfortable, and the location just can't be beaten. A very enjoyable experience.

The View saves the stay

Mixed bag here that could be easily fixed Pros: oceanfront view spectacular-bed comfortable-general ambience good, room service very quick Cons: Worn,worn-at over 500 a night-carpet in room worse than a days inn-dusty, and service at breakfast slow, slow slow Would say resting on its old laurels...need to freshen up! the type of guest that frequents this hotel is not accustomed to such things and should not have to become so when paying top dollar.

Oh, come on, that last review from a guy that didn't stay at the hotel?
The "hotel" across the street he refers to is a dive some of the europeans stay at.

The shutters hotel has amazing rooms and is the only hotel in Santa Monica on the beach. It's a class hotel frequented by the rich and famous. It has an elegant lobby and excellent restaurants.

Its only draw back is it is not located in a five star area, sort of a mediocre part of santa monica.

Perhaps a bit overpriced, but a fine hotel.

While on a business trip this week to Santa Monica, I called at this hotel for a look around and a brochure. At reception I asked the young lady for a brochure and rates. She informed me there was no brochure and handed me a rate card. No effort was made to welcome me or was I asked had I any questions. For the rate they charge they should send their front office staff to the nearest charm school as soon as possible. I will not be back. Try the Viceroy across the street, not on the beach, but staff much more friendly, and it?s a lot more competitive.

No longer our favourite

We returned to Shutters in late October for our fourth or fifth visit but found it's no longer the place it was. Getting a bit shabby in places, complacent service, disinterested staff. In an hotel of this calibre (and price bracket) we expected better and were sadly disappointed. Letters and emails to the manager have gone unanswered after one holding acknowledgement, which confirms our view that they couldn't care less about their customers.

We will stay elsewhere next visit - a pity, for other comments re location, atmosphere and style of this hotel are accurate. We have had some great stays here when it was a truly 5* experience.

Beautiful oceanfront views, I stay regularly. Worth the upgrade for better view! Much better than Casa del mar..Nicer than Lowes....My favorite hotel on the beach in all of la..would reccomend it to those in search of absolute comfort and tranquility.

hard pressed to go back there

my wife and i were there very recently and stayed in a non-ocean view room (it actually did have partial views of the ocean). the big problem we had started with the AC. since shutters has smoking rooms, the vent sucked up the smoke from these rooms and spewed it right into our non-smoking room thus making it smell as if we were walking into a bar.
i complained to the manager and after 5 minutes of explaining the major inconvenience (and even requesting him to go up to the room and smell for himself), he managed to give us a *GENEROUS* $50 off the room (first he offered $25). I expected a much fairer compensation especially for the inconvenience and the fact that this hotel is listed as a member of the small leading hotels of the world. very poor response from the manager and he cemented my decision to never patronize the hotel again.

Think Twice .........

Just returned from a week-end at the Shutters and was disturbingly disappointed. This used to be our favorite hotel at the beach, but found that the hotel needed a much needed "facelift"! I'm surprised that this is not an "ongoing process". Will we patronize again? Maybe, but with hesitation.

I loved the pampering, service and Wireless Internet.

My husband took me to Shutters for our 26th Aniversery. I loved the pampering, the most comfortable beds ever, magnificent bathroom and my husband loved the wireless Internet connection. The concierge made great resturaunt and show reservations, making it a very memorable anniversery. Great shopping too.

Top Local Tips for Santa Monica

two things to do Have lunch at one pico,nice food and good for celeb spotting(we saw geri halliwell ont he next table).Try dinner at via venetto on main street great food and buzzy atmosphere.

Baby Blue BBQ Don't miss the casual but great Baby Blue BBQ on Lincoln. Wonderful pulled pork and brisket!

walking Take a hike down the path along Santa Monica and Venice beaches, but come back up Main street to explore the little shops. Cute pet one called Tails of Santa Monica. Some interesting architecture (unusual columns on Main street in front of a couple of stores, unusual building with giant clown in front of another building). Go to the 3rd street Promenade for even more interesting and unusual stores and restaurants. Check out the Farmer's Market on Wednesdays nearby there. Plus the Santa Monica pier! Lots of fun stuff nearby. Have fun.
