We stayed at the Loews for 5 nights and at over $250 a night we couldn't afford more. But that said the hotel is lovely and the rooms large comfortable and very clean.
The hotel overlooks the beach and Santa Monica pier but it's not set ON the beach as the photos suggest. It is however just a walk over the road away.
Valet parking at the hotel means you don't have to find a parking space but you do pay for the privilege.
All in all, I would stay there again next time I was in LA but I would make sure I had plenty of credit on my Card!!!!”

It was Ok

My family and I checked into the Loews SM for the last night of our 4 days in L.A. area. I was looking forward to chillin and bike riding on the beach. The hotel is very pretty and clean. Our room, although small, was kept nice and the bathroom, aaah, it was definitely the best shower I had in a long time. The mattress was great too. LOL, as some say, they pool photo is deceptive. It is very, very small small. From our oceanview room, we had a view of a contruction site so perhaps they are building a 2nd pool. I would agree with those that say the front desk staff could be a little more friendly and perky considering they are in a tourist area. After spending 3 days at the Park Hyatt in Century City, which primarly is targeted to business people-who treated us like royalty, coming to the Loews, well, we definitely saw the drop in the level in service and pleasantry. You would have thought it would have been the opposite.

Well, we were only there one night and you can't beat the location. But for the price, I may try the Georgian or JW next time.

Great location

Stayed 5 nights at Loews Santa Monica during June, and were delighted with the beachfront bedroom and large balcony overlooking Santa Monica Pier. Came at a price I must admit, but stunning view and very nice decor.furnishings. I agree with other comments as to noise from the corridors/other bedrooms, would not like to be there when the Hotel very busy. Did not test the food as thought the prices quite high. Theres loads of great places to eat out especially if you have a hire car (Parking $25 dollars daily!). Extremely helpful and friendly doormen and concierge. Joined Loews loyalty programme via their website(booked direct) and was offered wine/cookies & cold drink or $10 dollar mini bar credit on arrival as a freebie!
Would recommend if you can get a beachview bedroom.

You would expect much more

We were very dissappointed in the room size, especially with our 2 children with us. The view of the alley was not nice, conversations from adjoining rooms could easily be heard, food/drinks were overpriced and the area the hotel was located in was not good. Needless to say we were extremely dissappointed for what is supposed to be a 4 star hotel. 1 up comment, the concierge was very helpful. The pictures you see of this hotel will fool you. You do not get your money's worth at this hotel, I am guessing they cater to business instead of vacationers.

Totally overrated

We recently had a two week holiday in the States, the Loews was our last stop and we were expecting a lot from this hotel. Unfortunately it failed to live up to its' expectations. When we checked in we asked if we could upgrade to a suite, we were told there would be a suite available in a couple of days. Two days later we asked what time the suite would be available only to be told that there would be no suite available during our stay. We did have a partial sea view though which I guess wasn't too bad. The surrounding area looked dodgy, loads of homeless, but we were assured that it was perfectly safe. We had room service three times, on all occasions the food was lukewarm, my husband's cup had lipstick marks on it and one of the plates had chocolate on. Only good thing about the hotel was that the Concierge was extremely helpful and friendly. Hotel gift shop extremely expensive even for a postcard. All in all, not what I would expect from a five star hotel. I definitely wouldn't stay here again.

Overpriced for what it has to offer

· We were in a room that communicated with the rooms on both sides. Conversations were perfectly clear, word-by-word. I have stayed at Holiday Inns that were quieter than that.

· In addition, our room was close to a supply room, so we would hear the maids in their early morning pow-wows.

· We did not have a room with a view, which is fine. Our room overlooked an alley, and my guess is that the room was exactly above the laundry area, because the ceiling of the balcony was coated with dryer lint.

· With the gorgeous weather that Santa Monica has, it is a crime to have fake vegetation in your hotel. I understand the palm trees inside the building, but what about the ones by the pool? What about the rest of the shrubbery?

· We ate at the bar twice. Maybe by then I was oversensitive to everything, but when a waitress asks me “are you going to need change for that?” after less than terrific service, I get slightly irritated.

Very disappointed

My wife & I and our 2 children have just returned from a very happy 3 week holiday in California. All of our hotel accomodation was fine except for this one which was by far the most expensive. The staff at reception were cool and aloof throughout. When we were shown to our room (partial sea view for an extra cost) it stank of smoke, When we rang down to the reception the lady refused initially to accept that people could have smoked in the room but was persuaded by the bell hop who waited with us. We were then shown another room which was facing the street and vastly inferior. We finally (tired & grumpy) took the smokey room after it was sprayed to reduce some of the smell. Throughout this the staff were completely unapologetic and, seemingly uncaring. I expected a lot more for my money generally. There seemed to be an air of arrogance throughout the hotel which made it cold & impersonal for family travellers. On the positive side, the hotel is almost on the beach which is great but otherwise I will go a long way to avoid staying here again.
PS I am a regular business & leisure traveller and do not believe we were expecting too much.

Poor value for money

from Leedslass
Overpriced, over-rated for the area. Would not feel safe walking around that area on my own. This was the most expensive hotel we stayed in on our vacation and was probably the one we liked the least. The receptionist was very friendly but it was such poor value for money.

Checked Out Early Because Too Noisy

from prospectivetraveler
I tried to book directly with the hotel where I was first redirected to the internet to join a "loew's frequent user" club to obtain free upgrades and special perks such as wine, fruit and newspapers. I then called back and was promised a fruit basket and bottled water upon arrival. We reserved an ocean view balcony room with seating on the balcony. Upon arrival we were escorted to a room with no fruit basket and a tiny balcony that was too small to accomodate seating. I called the front desk who said they would check to see if we could be relocated. When no one called me after 40 minutes, I called again and they kindly relocated us to a balcony room. However, they never provided the fruit basket and water. It also appeared that neither the shower nor the bath had been thoroughly cleaned as there were hairs in both. Starting at 9:00 p.m. the people next to our room had four people in their room for a party and we could hear literally every word of their conversation through the connecting door. We called to complain at 11:00 p.m. and the management said they would send around security, who thereafter never arived. We could also hear every conversation in the hallway and the elevator bell that was located quite a distance from our room. The next morning we received a wakeup call at 7:15 a.m.
that we never requested. The hotel kindly credited us the $25.00 parking when we expressed our disappointment with this problem.
Although the hotel is lovely and the management was courteous, I would not stay at this hotel again. We checked out early and relocated to a different hotel.

Great Location - Good Hotel

This Hotel is properly rated as a 4 Star hotel. The reviews in this forum also when averaged seem to accurately reflect Loews rating. I break it down in the following manner: Front Desk and Hotel Staff = 4.5 Star Maid Service = 3.5 Star Location = 4.5 Star Common Areas = 4.5 Star Rooms = 3 Star (Not very sound proof or as nicely redone as the common areas)

The big question you need to answer is whether or not you are willing to spend $200- $300 dollars / night on a 4 Star Hotel.

Our 3 day stay was excellent, we got a free room upgrade and were treated very well. The staff and location made all the difference for us.

Nice, but not anything special

from A TripAdvisor Member
I had read some negative comments about the Loews, but I booked it anyway as it had a pool and a good location. The rooms were small as stated below, especially since we had our two teen daughters with us. I was also prepared for the fact that the hotel was not directly on the beach.

When we drove up, my heart kind of sank. It didn't look very nice from outside. The lobby however was very tastefully decorated. All of the staff was extremely nice and helpful. The concierge helped us out several times. I guess my gripe is spending over $200 per night on a hotel and then being hit with $25 per night parking on top of that. It seems silly. Also, no coffee maker in the room, although there was plenty of counter space for one. Then when you go to the lobby for coffee, it's $3.00 per cup.

I guess what I'm saying is that the hotel was OK, but not a bargain by any stretch.

Top Local Tips for Santa Monica

overrated stay somewhere else...beware of the pier at night - it's a freakshow...

not as bad as we heard it was ... but still not good. Most sites will be a drive away, so a car is necessary.

Quiet room Request a room away from the pool to ensure a quiet morning. This hotel is frequented by families with kids. I don't mind noisy kids if I'm at the pool, but I don't want to hear them in my room.
