Lousy service but good location

We had made reservations for this hotel months in advance, when calling to confirm reservations and other questions there seemed to be problems(should have known then). We arrived in LA Early I knew check in wasn't til 3pm, but I called to see if our room was ready so we could check in early. The person I spoke assured me the room was ready I specified the room I had reserved and he assured me we could check in right away.
We did a little sight seeing and then headed to the hotel (2hrs later) upon arrival we found our room was not ready and the person at the desk said he had spoke with me and said he told me the room was not ready but we could store our luggage there until the room was ready. This was never told to me!!! We asked for another room but he said ne didn't want to move us because we had a ocean view room, and the other rooms didn't have a nice view. We decided to wait, they had put a rush on the house- keepers to get our room done ASAP. We got into our room over an hour later. Our view of the ocean was a huge tree in front of the window.
The Valet parking was innconvient only one person running the parking and was running all over to other parking ramps getting cars. when checking out we called ahead to the front desk to get our car so it would be ready when we got down stairs when we got down there we still waited half an hour.
The positive things I found about this place was the location was in the heart of it all close to the beach shopping and dinning. And the beds were comfortable. But the price was not worth that!!!!!
The service was so unbelievably terrible I can't understand how they are still in operation.

Fair hotel, good location

We spent 2 nights here (March 17/18). The hotel was not as nice as I had hoped. The rooms are small, the bed was comfortable, but the room looked out on the loud AC unit and there were no overhead lights so it was pretty dark. As city hotels go, it was ok but nothing special. The location is pretty good if you want to be near the center of Santa Monica. It is near all the big blue bus lines so you can pretty much go anywhere in LA without a car from here. I think it has more character than a best Western, but is not necessarily a better value.

Not as great as it seems

First things first. The location is unbeatable. Other than this, I got the cheapest room which was sort of last min, it was $119.00 but after taxes and valet came out to be $145. Our room had some really nice furniture in it, BUT the carpet looked like it was left there from the previous business. Also, the room was REALLY REALLY SMALL. I can't emphasize it more than this. If you are going to stay at the hotel carmel, you need to get the room a step up from the cheapest one. If you want quality, go pay more money to stay at the fairmont. Location was great though.

Good Location - Rooms dark and depressing

Didn't have this booked, found it in a coupon magazine. Went in to inquire, very nice lobby. So said yes to the room. We asked for non - smoking and when arrived in the room found we were in Smoking. Room smelled bad. We moved to another room which was clean & fine, but the rooms are quite small and the furniture is all very large and dark which makes it feel smaller. However we only had to stay for one night, so it is a good hotel for location to the beach and the 3rd st promenade. Also had a good bar next door.

Mixed bag

We stayed here based upon the recommendation at Fodors. We were very disappointed. Our first room was clastophobic - only room for the queen bed. We complained and mgmt switched us to a room with 2 queen beds and a separate living room for same price which was OK. Hotel was supposedly recently remodeled but it is still very dated. Free continential breakfast is only with the higher priced rooms.

Hotel has great location only 2 blocks from 3rd street prominade (don't miss it) and the pier/beach.

Gotta like a nice lobby, a dirty room and a lousy service !

This hotel is pretty depressing. Once you pass the lobby and get in the elevator, you get an unpleasant forestate of what's coming next. IE. everything is somewhat greasy and gross. The rooms are disgusting, it smells, there are no facilities whatsoever and the AC is an old, noisy and bulky fan. As for the staff : the worst I've ever seen :-( They're rude and unfriendly. Their english is surprisingly limited, so their priority is not to be helpful and considerate but charge you as soon as you step in the hotel and then forget you're even there. As for the location, obviously, it's a good one as you're very close to the 3rd str. promenade and the ocean.

Great location and very comfortable

I stayed here in December 04 and for the price and location this place was great. Clean, comfortable, newly renovated rooms, around the corner from the shopping promenade and the beach. I would definitely stay there again. The only complaint I had was there were no hair dryers or irons in the rooms, but I saw people getting them from the front desk. Don't be afraid to stay in this hotel, it's actually very nice. Much more reasonably priced then the places on ocean ave.

Soooo Disappointed

We stayed here in June 2004, and it was GROSS. We were SO disappointed. The hotel is well past it's sell by date. It smelt, the bedroom looked out on to a square of Pipes for air conditioning and brick walls. Noisy air conditioning unit. No hair dryer, no coffee making facilities. I would not recommend this hotel to my enemy! This was our last hotel stay in the USA and left a very bad taste. ALL our other hotels were GREAT!

IT was horrible and smelly.
There was a mean asian guy at the desk.
Our door didn't work but they wouldn't give us another room.
We didn't stay the night because it smelled like smoke and pee but they didn't give us our money back!

We thought this hotel looked beautiful from the outside. The location was great, across the street from the Pier, a couple of blocks from 3rd street. When we got into the elevator it made scary noises. But little did we know that the room was would be much worse. When we got into the room there was a terrible odor as if someone or something had died. Then we looked out the window since we asked for a view and it faced pipes and a brick wall. But the worst was when we pulled the bed sheet back and there was about 10—15 strands of black hair on the pillow, and brown stains on the sheets. So needless to say we did not stay here. The front desk clerk was nice enough to allow us to leave without a charge. But I do not recommend staying elsewhere.

Top Local Tips for Santa Monica

Do not rent a car in santa monica there is no need to rent a car if your staying in Santa Monica. It is a place were you can walk to anything and if you need to there is great public transportation or taxis

Venice Beach We were disappinted in Venice Beach - it was so busy and there was hardly anyone at Muscle Beach. The whole place was really tacky and not what we expected. However, if you walk inland for ten minutes you will come across the Venice Canal area which is full of lovely picturesque waterways with lovely gardens and homes.

A Decent Breakfast the hotel recommend Jinksys Cafe next door for breakfast. it is mexican and although the food ivery good it is a lot more expensive than other nearby places. if you walk around the corner there is a lovell little breakfast place that is a lot cheaper.
