Beautiful historic place with perfect location

from ToneOslo_Norway
Stayed 3 nights end July at this great mansion. Location is just perfect with walking distance to 3rd Street and also to the beach if you're looking for excercise. We had a corner room with balcony, large kitchen, walk-in closet and bathroom with separate powder-room. Very clean and well equipped. No problem with the hotel not being staffed from around 6 pm till next morning. Parking can be a challenge, especially during weekends - even if the hotel gives you a parking permit. We totally enjoyed the old Hollywood feeling this hotel gave us and would love to come back sometime.

Tranquil retreat

from JonoBaker
Great way to start our holiday. From the fountain in the garden to the old-style building... it was a joy, even if it was for just one night. And only a few blocks from Third St promenade and Palisades Park. And the icing on the cake? The price, compared with most other hotels in Santa Monica, was great. A hidden gem.

Great if you are tired of the chains!

It's really a treat to stay in a place like this. It's certainly not staffed like a luxury hotel, but the few staff are incredibly friendly and accomodating. The rooms are truly amazing, spacious -- particularly if you are looking for a kitchen. The kitchens are bigger than many rooms in other hotels. A little light on the ammenities, but great location (two blocks from Third Street Promenade, two blocks from Santa Monica bluffs) and wonderful historic rooms put this at the top of it's class for the money.

Basic but Nice

from LAtoLVTraveler
Just got back from staying at the Embassy. It was in a great location for walking and not too far from the Big Blue Bus stops. It was just a short walk to the ocean and the Third Street Promenade. Also a couple of blocks to Montana Ave. which is famous for exclusive shops. Rachel Ashwell's Shabby Chic is there!
We had the smallest room possible which had a coffee maker and very good coffee. There is really no service after 5 pm. The price is right for this location and the room was very clean and quiet.
We would stay here again because of its' convenience and quiet location. We ate at Lago a great Italian restaurant on the 3rd ST. Promenade and a deli on Montana Ave that was awesome.

lovely, European-style hotel with an old California feel

Stayed here on business first week of March 2005. This is a very do-it-yourself hotel - outside of 9 to 5 or so, don't expect anyone to be available to do any hand holding. But if you're fairly comfortable finding your own way, this is a perfect place to be, and your standard map of the area and guide to local services/restaurants/etc are provided in-room. It's a rare find to be able to operate without a car in LA.

The entry courtyard is filled with wonderful, good smelling flowers and plants and tall old trees. Upon entering, you can tell the place has been around a while andis probably past its heyday, but it feels very authentic in an old-school Hollywood kind of way. The room I was in was huge with big windows, super high ceilings with dark wood beams, and a big wrought iron bed. It had a full kitchen and seating area with dishes, pots and pans, fridge and coffee maker.

The ocean is three blocks away, the shopping Promenade two blocks away, and there is a back courtyard (not huge) with a fountain, benches and table. I was on my own and wishing that friends were along to hang out with here! I'd recommend it to anyone.

Note to singles - at night, the street is a bit dark around the hotel, but I walked it on my own and didn't encounter any shady characters.

An Oasis of peace and tranquility in Santa Monica

from Sheepshearer
Stayed here for a couple of nights in mid January. Very interesting classic building set in pretty gardens. Room was very clean and comfortable with coffee making facilities. We had a room on the third floor with balcony overlooking front gardens. Room was not large but adequate. Quite area & easy walking distance to promenade, shops restaurants. Street parking is free with permit from hotel but tricky to find a space close to building at times. Watch out for parking restrictions on Tuesdays and Wednesdays when you have to move the car away on street sweeping days or be sure to get a ticket. Overall, a great place to stay in a great city by the sea in classic SOCAL style!

Musty and Possibly Haunted

from ltp_tango
While vacationing in Santa Monica during the week of December 27, 2004, my boyfriend and I wanted to extend our stay through New Year's. We looked at possibly moving from the most excellent Sheraton to the Embassy Hotel Apartments, so we could cook our own food and save some money. We were impressed with the great reviews on this website, and really wanted to see the place.

Unfortunately, the photos make the place look better than it does in person. We came to look at it around 5:30 PM one night. No one was available to let us into the lobby, ask questions, etc. The manager was not at the location, and would not be back until sometime the next morning. We were able to look around inside the lobby by entering with the permission of one of the guests.

The lobby was very old and musty. It smelled terrible...like mothballs and dust. There was a very old, very bad condition piano in the lobby, and everything just looked very old and dated. The place had a "haunted" feel about it...very weird.

Also, as others have mentioned and as the hotel will tell you, you have to park on the street, and it is VERY difficult to find available parking, which would be a pain if you were staying there.

I am glad we stayed at the Sheraton instead of here. I'm not a snob, but the hotel was a bit too shabby and worn for my tastes.

Not just another boring hotel room

from nonanolet
My stay at the Embassy Hotel made a nice trip to Santa Monica something to cherish. I went there at the end of October for my sister's wedding reception. I usually try to save money by taking the shuttle bus. This affords all of your fellow passengers a good look at your hotel. First of all, the driver had a hard time finding it, it is in such a secluded neighborhood full of quaint little houses and small condos. When I got out, I felt like a movie star. The building is Old Style Meditteranean with huge wrought iron grates on the front door as well as an imposing iron gate out front. Tropical plants and palm trees abound. The lobby is no less impressive, but it feels more like home than a hotel. The sleeping room I got was probably the smallest available but it was still more than enough space. There was a beautiful old fashioned cast iron bed frame but the mattress was super comfortable with tons of pillows and a duvet. I had French doors that opened onto a small patio out back with a gurgling fountain. The bathroom was all done in white tile with period fixtures. The building had radiators but that only added to the old fashioned charm. I was within easy walking distance of Palisades Park, the Pier, the Third Street Promenade, and the Montana Avenue boutiques. The hotel doesn't serve breakfast but there are plenty of places to eat in the neighborhood. I had the Breakfast Special at the Stop N Cafe on The Promenade, and another day I had Eggs Benedict at the Provence Cafe on Montana. Both times it was enough to hold me until dinner. Speaking of dinner, I had some really good lasagna at "I Cugini" on Ocean Avenue and some good Thai food at "Monsoon" on the Promenade. When it came time to leave I asked the desk clerk to call me a taxi. The taxi service they use is an all Mercedes fleet. The Embassy hotel is first class all the way!

didnt even want to get past reservations!!!

Talk about crappy customer service!
I tried booking for our summer trip, July 2005. The Manager gave me a rate, however informed me that rates would go up June 1. I explained i would be booking and confirming with a Visa card, would that not gurantee me my rate, as in most hotels, and he said no it would not, if i booked now, he would charge me more!!
any hotel that treats potential customers like that, i hae to agree with the other reviewers, service would suck and the stay could be awful.
Dont bother, there are plenty of other, courteous places eager to take your business...

Wonderful stay at the Embassy

from DouglasCarlisle_UK
Stayed here for two nights in march 2004. Wonderful hotel like staying in a hollywood hotel of the golden years. Our room was beautiful & on the ground floor overlooking the exquisite garden. The staff were superb & the location of the hotel is first class minutes from third street & the Santa Monica pier but in a quiet location.
Two moans they do not have a carpark & parking on the street can be a pain & there is no pool but saying that if you want something different with a slice of style then this is for you. Next time we are in LA we are going to stay here, teriffic stay.
Many thanks

Top Local Tips for Santa Monica

Buses Take the bus if you are trying to stick to a budget in LA. They are cheap, reliable and made it easy to get around. They were also not crowded, it seems that not many people use them!

Travel to and from Airport Santa Monica has a very good bus transportation system. Its called the Big Blue Bus. Take the Number 3 Big Blue Bus from the Aiport.

Leave the car at home. Parking seems to be an issue. Leave the car at home and use your feet or taxis - one less thing to worry about.
