be careful of the bin men!

from psychic
stayed in the cal mar for 2 weeks in aug 2004, staff pleasant enough, and amenities fine BUT NOISE LEVELS horrendous, there is a hotel on street next door, and bins seem to be emptied at all times of the day and night, also a magnet for families, so expect noise from children in pool, signs of pool usage times never adhered to, when I stayed, so noise early morning and late night , and lack of staff to deal with complaints doesnt help. Had to put up with drunken bunch of single men ,for 5 nights , it was awful.Staff do their best but booked out early, went to the oakwood apartments, and thanked God Id found them, they REALLY are well worth the extra money

Too Noisy to Sleep

from A TripAdvisor Member
My husband and I stayed here in June 2004 along with our in-laws. Before I go into the big negatives, the positives are that the rooms were spacious, bright, and clean. The location of the hotel was excellent. When we got to the hotel I was quite pleased with the rooms. The hotel pool was very small, but I didn't mind as I wasn't planning on using it anyway. The problem was that the hotel was so noisy that we got very little sleep the whole time we were there and we ended up leaving a couple days earlier than planned. The louvered glass windows let in almost all the outside noise and we could hear every passing footstep and voice. Children started splashing and talking loudly in the pool starting at 8:30am. And adults were talking loudly around the pool 'til 1:30am in the morning on the weekends. One night the toilet in the room above us overflowed at about 3am or 4am and the guests had to wait three hours until someone showed up at the front desk to help them out. I know this because I could hear every word they were saying outside our window. The next night the alarm clock in the room above us went off at 6:30am. The people who had been staying there during the toilet incident had checked out and hotel staff hadn't checked the alarm clock after they left. We couldn't find a hotel employee to take care of the problem either. In retrospect, I wish we had switched hotels after the first two sleepless nights instead of enduring several. If this hotel would replace the original cheap apartment windows with windows with a modicum of soundproofing and hired staff that would answer the phone in the middle of the night it would be a nice place to stay. If you are on a tight budget and have young kids, you might still consider staying here as you'll get a lot of space and a kitchen. The rooms are definitely inexpensive for the location. I'd rather pay more and stay somewhere else where I can actually sleep.

Idela for your 1st visit to Los Angeles

from rpj
As it was mine and my brothers first visit to L.A., we wanted somewhere to stay that wasn't too expensive but located near the beach.

The hotel suites are located in a very good location. 2 minute walk to the 3rd Street Promenade, and about a 20yard walk to the Pacific Palislades Costal Bluff which overlooks the fabulous beach.

I preferred to stay in a suite rather than a hotel room, and these suites roved that i made a right decision. Rooms were very spacious and this made the visit to LA even better.

The staff are also very helpful, friendly and understanding (as we had problems with credit cards in NYC). The staff also went out of their way to book us some transportation which we needed (this was a great help) - so the service also made this a great place to stay.

For approx £100 sterling a night - this was an absolute bargain, and we will definitely stay there again when we visit next year.

Hated it.

I'm afraid I have to disagree with your reviewers. I booked 6 nights in Cal Mar on a recommendation from a friend and by the reviews on this page. I was sorely disappointed with the property. While in an excellent location, from the time we stepped through the door, the Cal Mar immediately sent my heart plummetting!! The pool was dirty and uninviting, the concrete cracked and the furniture dated. Our apartment was on the second floor in an unlit corner. While spacious, it was run down, smelt musty and completed with awful 70s furniture. It ruined our first day in LA! Even before we saw the room I had told the front desk that we may only stay a couple of days. Within an hour of seeing the room, we agreed to give the obligatory 48 hours notice and move.

Book Hotel California instead!! - we got a mini suite for €150 a night (same as Cal Mar), gorgeous room, lots of space and just half a block from the beach at the pier!

one of our favorites

Normally i wouldn't bother to write a review but I really really loved the Cal Mar. Of course you shouldn't expect it to be something it's not--it's not glitzy by any means. I loved the 50's apartment feel. The rooms were on the shabby side but the cleanliness really impressed me. I loved the heated pool (it was pretty chilly the week we were there so that was a plus). The convenience for families is incredible--breakfast in and sometimes lunch at a table by the pool. I loved being able to do laundry while the kids played at the pool. The location, price, parking can't be beat. Mostly, we met the nicest people hanging around the pool. Interesting people for us to chat with and there was always someone for the kids to hang out with. Nothing fancy but good old fashion comfort, convenience and fun. I can't wait to go back (oh and L.A. is fab with kids--so much to see and do--what a fun city)

The price is right

We stayed here from 31 August - 2 September. We specifically asked for a room away from the alleyway which we had read was noisy from others reviewing it on tripadvisor and this was good advice. Although it is like a flash back to the 70's the units were massive and had a kitchen and large lounge area. It was a shame it didnt have airconditioning (it was hot) but there were fans in the lounge and bedroom. For the price this is a good place to stay as everywhere else in santa monica is pricy and doesnt have the free parking.

A Little Gem

We picked this hotel after seeing the Tripadvisor reviews. This is a small, peaceful and safe haven in a very busy City. When we arrived the hotel looked a bit 'downmarket' from the outside but once past the entrance its very good indeed. Most of the suites, which to a Brit, would be descibed as flats, look inward over the pool area. Ours had an outside view but that did not present a problem as the hotel is in an essentially residential area so reasonably quiet at night. There is no air conditioing so you de need to keep wondows open at night. I used ear plugs to sleep to avoid being woken too early by passing traffic. There is undercover parking but its on a first come first served basis so some residents had to double park on the forecourt. The suite had two beds in the bedroom, a good sized bathroom, a fully fitted kitchen and an enormous lounge with armchairs and a bed settee which I used and which was very comfortable. The suite was clean but in need of some TLC. It was obvious though from looking into other rooms that a refurb was underway with bigger TVs, new carpets and soft furnishings etc. Having said that I had no complaints about our room. The killer advantage, however, is the location of the hotel. Literally minutes from the beach, the pier and best of all 3rd St Promenade. We were on a touring holiday so I rebooked to stay there the night before our flight out of LAX. The staff were very helpful and on our first arrival addressed me by name and said they were expecting us. You would not get that in a bigger hotel. On the second stay we were given a refurbished room which was excellent. We were a party of Dad and two young adults but it would be a fine hotel for families with young children. Unlike many Motels you can't enter or exit the hotel without passing reception which is open from 7.30 am to Midnight, which adds to the sense of security but note there are no safes in the rooms. Out of hours you have a passkey to gain entry.

Stayed here over a year ago, writing review now

Our stay was awesome, great service, great trip packages, great organization for getting around, one minor problem with the 1st level ceiling, haha that was awesome, ya, overall awesome stay, right near the beach, within walking (or tricycle) distance of venice beach rec. center, would definitely stay there again, if ever returned.

Not quite so bowled over as others

from Cottonsfancy
Stayed here for four nights in late June.

Firstly the positives: great situation near beach & Third Street Prom; free parking; spacious apartments which are great for families; clean; warm inviting pool.

The negatives: needs general renovation throughout. Kitchens are stuck in the '70s. Our cooker was old and we turned off gas at wall as there was a strong smell of gas. Pool bottom needs resurfaced. Don't lean on metal railings on upper tier as they appear to be insecure.

With an overhaul this place could be outstanding. Having said that, I appreciate the price would be considerably higher!

Good value for money

This place is ideal, if not rare to find, for family with children. The rooms are clean and spacious with plenty of storage place. The heated pool is definitely a bonus as swimming in the sea can be too cold in March. The pool opens until 9pm in the evening and with the decorating lights on and the night sky it is very relaxing to finish your day there. The hotel is conveniently located but without the air and noise pollution of other more expensive hotels on the main streets. Hotel staff are friendly and helpful as well.

near hotel stay somewhere which is in walking distance from beach and shops.

Homeless Santa Monica not only attracts homeless people from across the nation, other L.A. communities apparenly round up their homeless and dump them in Santa Monica. We feel sorry for these vagrants -- kids, grandparents, entire families -- but they are taking over this once welcoming beach city. The police don't let them sleep in the streets or parks at night, so they sleep during the day, on the bus benches and in the parks. It's pretty depressing.
