Godd accomodation, fantastic location

We stayed here for two nights in April as part of our road trip around California. It was the cheapest palce we were going to stay in, but as we weren't arriving until late on the first evening we didn't mind if it had a few rough edges. It didn't!

Our room was clean and of a good size, with everything there should be, TV, coffee maker etc. Parking was FREE! And you are only two minutes from the sea. Location location location as they say.

We had a fantastic two days in Santa Monica, and we were very pleased with the accomodation that we knew would be basic.

t ask for a better location at the price!

Don't judge the Bayside Hotel by its external appearance. Yes it would benefit from a coat of paint, the rooms are a little dated, but it was clean and comfortable and I found the staff to be very helpful, although I never did see the same person twice on the front desk!

It is in a superb location to explore or just laze on the beach and very reasonable rates too - you can't really go wrong.

My To Tip: Don't miss out on the Tide Shuttle which for 25c picks you up virtually outside the front door and will take you to Santa Monica and Venice. You could walk - but at this price, save you legs and your time!

Basic Lodging Across the Street from the Beach!

In the middle of Santa Monica, Bayside Hotel is a great find: it's inexpensive, extremely neat and clean, and has fantastic views of the ocean. Be sure to ask for a room facing the water. Even if you don't get an ocean-view, rooms (which are very basic), are a great deal for the location, and for the FREE Parking. The staff are very hospitable; on the first night when we arrived late and the parking lot was full, the innkeeper suggested we park at the front to avoid searching for parking. It was really sweet, and judging from the car parked there the next night, not just an abberation. There are several wonderful hotels and restaurants around the area, as well as shuttles to major tourist attractions, so you can leave your car at the hotel and go about your day. Bayside Hotel is the perfect place to unwind -- right across the street from the beach!

Ignore Initial Impressions

Booked this place after reading an add in the California Brochure, got a rate of $94 for a garden view room so we booked for 2 nights.

We arrived here at 10.30pm after getting lost in LA. We were tired and crotchety and our first impressions were - " What a godawful dump!!"

It is very dated, from the windows and decor to the art deco bathroom and funny little coffee maker.

However, once we had settled in and had a good nights sleep, we appreciated the fact that it was actually really clean and the bathroom was truly gorgeous - more of a wet room that a bathroom, with original '20's art deco tiling. I always bring my own toiletries anyway so the lack of them didn't really affect us. We actually booked to stay an extra night here.

Staff were really friendly and helpful, we booked a tacky Tour of the Stars homes with them - LOL, great fun!!!

Location is excellent as well, midway between the Downtown area and Main St. Recommend Schatzi - Schwarzneggers restaurant - it's actually one of the cheapest and nicest around, also a plethora of cheap nail bars around.
A few steps away and you get straight to the beach.

It could do with a lick of paint and perhaps aircon might not go amiss, but apart from that, it's a good economy option.

We stayed at Bayside for one night before during our four day trip in LA. We cancelled a previous reservation at the Best Western and we were glad we did because the Bayside was perfect for what we needed. $79 for a clean, comfortable room, and the location was unbeatable. 3rd street prominade was a ten minute walk along the boardwalk, as were a multitude of other shopping/entertainment options. The hotel staff was incredibly nice and helpful and gave great advice and directions. They went out of their way to help us, and I would definately stay there again. If you want ocean views and caviar, pay hundreds somewhere else. If you want a clean, comfortable place to stay that has great staff and is a block from the beach, stay at Bayside

Stayed there from 12/30/04-1/2/05. Absolutely the WORST attitude of any front desk staff I've ever encountered when we checked in -- and I've vacationed in many places all over the world. Place was cheap and clean. No bathtub -- only a shower. No kitchenette (in our room at least) or "jogging track" as I've seen it advertised on other sites. Ancient coffee maker on the wall -- and liquid soap dispensers on the wall (think public bathroom) and in the shower. Close to beach & Santa Monica activities. $109/night. Free parking. Meets your basic needs, but nothing more.

Will stay there again

Stayed at this hotel in December 04. Loved the location, it is close to everything in the area. Hotel staff was very nice while checking in and out. I wll go back to stay there again. Room was cleaned when we came back from the day. They even washed the glasses we had used!

Great for a brief stay in Santa Monica/LA

We stayed in the Bayside after a long haul flight to LAX. Santa Monica is a great place to stay but hotels are very expensive in the area. The Bayside was one of the cheapest options and the rooms, although very basic and old fashioned were more than adequate. If you're planning an overnight stay in LA, this hotel is right on the beach at Santa Monica and close to the airport (20minutes). The staff were friendly.
Again, if you're intending to explore Santa Monica and Venice Beach and spend most of your day out in the open, why pay 3-4 times the price to stay at hotels literally one block away. I wouldn’t really stay here for more than one or two nights however as there are no real facilities. Great for an overnight or day stopover in Santa Monica though and ideal for LAX as well.

Great Location-Comfortable

We were price shopping when we made the reservation and this place fit the bill. Upon checking in we were a little shocked at how "old Fashioned" our room was. After our intitial shock wore off, and we unpacked and laid down on the bed, nothing mattered. The place is accomodating, centrally located, within walking distance of everything, including the big blue bus. We had a great view of the ocean and that was worth everything. And to be able to walk outside without having to use elevator or go through a fancy main lobby was just what we wanted. I would have liked a few ameneties, shampoo, cream rinse and such. We would definately go back.

We stayed in the Bayside Hotel for one night, we were planning on staying for longer when we booked over the internet but couldn’t bare to once we got there. The rooms are shabby but sheets and towels were clean. I think we were lucky as we had an ocean view, I think we would have left immediately if we had been given one of the back rooms. The car park is very tight and they do run out of spaces. Staff were pleasant enough but not over helpful. The only plus is the location, 20 paces and you are on the beach.

Top Local Tips for Santa Monica

Super shuttle The Blue Supershuttles from outside the terminals are convenient and reliable. It cost 15 dollars per head to travel from LAX to our hotel in Santa Monica. Although it took a while driving round the airport to collect passengers, when we booked a shuttle back to the airport on both occasions the shuttle turned up bang on time.

GETTY VILLA, Malibu Plan a trip to Getty Villa Museum at Malibu. Its only 10-15 minutes drive along PCH1 on the way to Malibu. It has great Roman Architecture, gardens and lots of arts and sculptures. Its FREE! Just book online for reservations and pay $8 per car for parking.

Thai and Indian We live on the East Coast. Our favorite Thai and Indian restaurants are on the West Coast, right next door to each other, fifteen minute walk from the hotel. Thai Dishes at 111 Santa Monica Blvd. and Gate of India at 117, right off Ocean Avenue.
