When I arrived, the front desk person took a rather long time to come help us, let alone acknowledge us. A TV was on in the backroom with a rather high volume so even though I rang the bell 2 times, she took a long time to come out. As I waited for her, I was glancing around (one of the backroom doors were open). It felt as if I entered a stranger's apartment and was invading their personal space. Adding to my uncomfortable ness about invading their "home", when the front desk person came out, she was in a pajamas/night robe and looked completely unprofessional. She looked as if she literally just rolled out of bed; her hair looked as if it was uncombed the entire day, etc. In her defense, I could tell she was fighting a rather bad cold.
When I went to my room, I passed an adjacent room that looked rather eerie. The curtains were torn/shredded as if an animal had a heyday for a couple of hours, the window had a large crack in it, packaging tape was placed on the window to prevent any broken glass from falling, there was also a piece of plywood covering a broken part of the window, etc. To know that my room was right next door made me wonder what in the world happened in the room next to me, and if someone/something is going to come after me that night.
I entered the room and saw meager accommodations which is what I expected and was satisfied seeing that I was just there for one night to sleep (thank God I was on the trip with someone else!). However, I didn't expect the floors to be so dirty and the bathroom to be in such a bad condition. Walking on the floor with shoes, you can immediately tell how badly soiled it was. Trying to put my assumptions aside, I even walked barefoot. The carpet was so filthy as can be that no amount of cleaning could've salvaged it. There was this filminess about the carpet just making it feel worse and worse with every step I took with and most definitely without shoes. I just couldn't get myself to walk around barefoot at all after that. The room I stayed in had poor insulation and drafts were felt through the door and windows all night long. The comforter even felt old, dirty, and very stiff. The bathroom was really old and needed some remodeling but everything was in working order.
Needless to say, I had a hard time sleeping well. You know that a room is in poor condition when you leave it feeling really dirty even though you took a shower and washed up. Now, I'm not some snob where I need to stay at a 3+ star hotel. I knew that the accommodations would be meager, however, I most definitely did not expect what I got. No price is worth those types of accommodations. So why didn't I leave that place? Because they had a sign at the front desk saying there are absolutely NO refunds whatsoever and it was too late in the night to try to even find another place to stay anyway. Since it was just one night, we figured that we could handle it. I never felt as dirty after one night of camping underneath the stars without running water and this is from someone who hates camping but has done it a few times. I will never stay at the Best Quality Inn, Santa Maria ever again (and probably not any other Best Quality Inn's if I can help it). hotels.com rated it as a 2 star place. It makes me wonder what a 1 star place is like after my experience in Santa Maria. *Shiver* What a scary thought.
