Somewhat Lacking in Quality

There were several problems with the hotel; and I complained at the time, but to no avail. For one thing, the hot water ran out at a low-peak time of day. (I forgot what else was wrong; it's been almost two years.) I asked for a discount, but was told the management was centralized, or something like that, and they couldn't help me. I'd still appreciate a refund; it was quite expensive. Please don't send me a coupon for a free stay.

Top Local Tips for Santa Cruz

Parking and one way streets can be a problem Santa Cruz has a confusing downtown street layouit and lots of one-way streets and lanes that -- with insufficient warning- force you to turn where you don't want to. A GOOD STREET MAP IS A MUST! The City of Santa Cruz is also VERY vigorous in enforcing parking regulations. At $25 per violation, ticketing cars is a big cash cow for the city. The "free parking" structures in the downtown are anything but free if you stay longer than 3 hours -- this time limit is hidden in small print on the signs -- it is NOT obvious!

Read the local tabloids Santa Cruz if full great places to eat and always has something happening. There are several free newspapers to pick up that really make the experience complete. I especially like the dining guide that offers price rating by the number of $. This really makes decision making easy. We also had a good idea of the places we wanted to shop at by these magazines. They are very helpful.

A 35 Minute Senic Drive North to Pescadero is a Must. Take Hwy 1 North up the coast to Pescadero. Enjoy a warm delicious bowl of the artichoke soup. My friend and I split a crab melt sandwich and heirloom tomato salad with balsamic vinegar dressing. It was sooo incredibly tastey. Afterwards take a little walk and check out the little thrift store and don't forget to stop at Norms Grocery to pick up their famous fresh baked garlic artichoke bread. Check out Pescadero State Beach (across Hwy 1) on the way out and enjoy the clean sand and the colorful pebbles. On the drive back towards Santa Cruz stop off at the Pigeon Point lighthouse for some really gorgeous views and look for the sea lions on the rocks. (I highly recommend you bring your binoculors!)
