Historical Traveller Reviews of Dream Inn Hotel
My wife, our 7 year old son and I stayed at the Dream Inn in August 2008. The hotel had just reopened following extensive renovation work. We liked the location overlooking Santa Cruz beach and pier and the hotel is about 3/4 minutes walk to the boardwalk. The room was spotlessly clean, excellent and very comfortable bed, and good bathroom with shower only. Decor is beach retro and fine for the location. Valet parking was friendly and efficent. Room service was excellent. However, we felt the rate was expensive for the standard of hotel but overall worth it for the location and views.
Beautiful ocean view
loved this hotel! we had a beautiful view of the ocean and boardwalk! it had a really nice pool and hot tub and you could walk outside the hotel to the beach. you had to use your key card to get back inside the hotel from the beach, this is a really good thing! if you've ever been to the beach in cali you know this is a good thing! the beds were really comfy and pretty good sized. it was a lso very clean, which is a really good thing also!
Not what it should be
After a major renovation we went for two days the rooms were $300.00 per night..and many problems! No knowledge of our reservation had to scamper to get a room. The decor looked like early Andy Warhol..complete with lime green shutters, red potato chip chairs and metal table..shower curtain was clear plastic very walmart looking! Yes we did complain more then once especially after the "new televisions" froze every five minutes so much for that small pleasure! all of this plus misc other inconviences led to us receving a complimentary breakfast..not good enough in my estimation for the lack of courtesy and the lack of concern for the guests comfort I would never go there again . My advice stay right on the Boardwalk much better for people watching and resonable rates
Family Fun at the Beach
With two preschoolers this was the ideal place to get surf, sand and stay close to the Boardwalk. My husband and I also enjoyed the poolside service for drinks and snacks. The heated kiddie pool was big plus for the cool Santa Cruz mornings and we enjoyed the easy walk to the Boardwalk. They were very accommodating to let us use the pool when we arrived before our room was ready. It is in a very secure part of town and well lit at night. The valet service was very quick and the front desk was very helpful wtih directions. We'll defintely be back!
My husband and I had a great time at the Dream Inn. They did a great job remodeling it. We stayed in one of the king tower rooms. The views were excellent, every room has a beach and boardwalk view. The beds were amazingly comfy and the bathroom was roomy, the shower was great. We also had room service breakfast which was so tasty, yummy banana pancakes! Very easy walk to the boardwalk and lots of restaurants, and direct access to the beach. The pool was nice too, crowded, but drinks poolside is always cool. Also, free valet parking! One of the best hotels I have stayed at in a long time.
new rooms are spectacular
forget the old hotel .... this is as modern as it gets ...
total referb in 2008, rooms are spectacular if you like the modern look. Ipod docking stations etc ... very very cool.
awesome dream inn
Stayed at the newly renovated dream inn and loved it! Every room has an ocean view and a fun, hip, and well appointed room. There is food and drinks available by the pool and beach access from the pool deck. It was relaxing to sit out on the balcony and have a drink and watch the beach or all the action down by the pool. We will be going back again for our future summer vacations. I'm glad there is finally somewhere to hang our hat for a fun getaway. The rooms are sooo clean and cute. Don't forget to order the banana foster pancakes from room-service, you won't be disappointed.
The New Santa Cruz Dream Inn is Open!!
Recently purchased by Joie de Vivre hotels and going through a massive renovation, the Dream Inn has re-opened for business as of July, 2008. Spent four nights there with two girlfriends, and had an absolutely wonderful experience. The staff is very friendly and accomodating, fom Stacy at the front desk, to Sam & friends at the bell stand to Haley serving drinks by the pool. The rooms are decorated in a retro-beach style and very comfortable. We stayed in a 10th floor suites (one of the Cloud floors)with an amazing view of the ocean and boardwalk. Can't wait to return.
We have been staying at the "Dream Inn" for the last three summers. We were very excited about the new management and renovations. We have three small children so we get two adjoining rooms. Last summer we showed up a couple of hours before check-in and had to wait a couple hours after the official check-in for our rooms. This year we decided to check-in after the official check-in time. When we showed up they didn't have our two reserved adjoing rooms anwhere in the hotel. Of course the person that took our reservation on the phone failed to mention that when you ask for adjoining rooms it is only a request and the hotel can not be held responsible for not having your rooms when you arrive. So what it really means is that the people at this hotel are too incompetent to pull off a simple request . The desk clerk at the hotel didn't seem that concerned about the situation and stated only the obvious the my wife and I could stay in seprate rooms with the kids. (Whow, what a genius!) . We left without checking in, and probably won't return. It seems all that has changed at the "Dream Inn"is the paint and the name.
Loved the Dream Inn!
My husband grew up in Santa Cruz and fondly remembered the Dream Inn as a local landmark. We decided to stay there recently for a wedding, after hearing it had been purchased by a chain of luxury hotels and renovated. We were not disappointed. The staff was courteous and more than helpful. The decor is retro chic and reflects local style. Everything was convenient and easy. The beds were very comfortable and our view of the ocean was amazing. It is one of the nicest hotels I've ever stayed in. My favorite part was lounging by the pool with a glass of wine while watching the waves.
Top Local Tips for Santa Cruz
The area restuarants rely on college students for wait staff. Every meal we ate in every restaurant was tainted by really poor service...slow, forgetful, mistaken orders, wrong bills. Most of the food was good, but lower your expectations for service
Visit the arboretum at UCSC. It's free. The large site is divided into geographical areas -- natives, South Africa, New Zealand, etc. Lots to see. Many proteas. Very nice gift shop sells plants. Directions: head toward university on Bay; at intersection (Empire Grade?) before entering campus turn left; arboretum is a short distance on right.
cool in June
Santa Cruz is warm from about noon til 6:00pm. Bring a light jacket if you plan to be outside.
