Historical Traveller Reviews of Chaminade at Santa Cruz Hotel

We stayed here for 2 nights with 2 children. We found this place very kid friendly. The place was very quiet and clean. The pool was beautiful with pink flowers in bloom all over. The grounds are accessable to walk through and look at nature. Overall it was a very enjoyable time.

Good value

I stayed here two nights in july. I was able to book it at 100 per night thru priceline, morning of. At 100 it is a good deal....nice bed, but it is a sterile, conference center feel not a resort at all.

Worn out, incompetant staff, generic food

from A TripAdvisor Member
I wouldn't put this hotel in the "resort" class. It's acceptable, but don't expect the service to be efficient or prompt. While the pool could be nice, it seems not only to be open to the general public, but also used for children's summer camp. The towels provided are too small and not on par with most modern hotels and resorts. While the spa is nice and new, the locker rooms are moldy and not very clean. All in all, we felt misled by the website claims of "world-class hospitality" and "luxury".

The Chaminade...What a Joke!

from A TripAdvisor Member
Where to Begin?... First of all, we heard Chaminade was the "It" nice place to go in S.C. After years of staying at the cheap ol' funky-but-clean enough and walk to the beach Econo Lodge, we decided to splash out on my birthday last November. The Enterance drive to the place should have told us something. It is up (past a cemetary-bad fung shuy, unless you already live near a cemetary, don't stay near one) this creepy Addams Family winding drive-we arrived just after dark-and there is nothing else around. Usually you think "Great, nice and quiet and secluded". The grounds are actually an old high school(more bad fung shuy, unless you really loved high school-I didn't). and they look just like that. There is no charm whatever and after being greeted by what was a weird valet(we think) guy, we checked in only to find that we had to carry our suitcases up 2 flights of stairs in a building that looked like, and probably was, an old high school classroom wing. We felt like we were in a dorm or camp. Inside the room, however, the contrast couldn't have been more striking. Ours did not have a speck of dirt in it (unlike other reviews) and was, in fact pretty luxurious. Or at least it looked like they were trying. We felt like we were in a five star prison. We felt weirdly isolated, maybe because it was November. We gave the hot tub outside a try. We were the only ones in the whole area, and it felt strange. We both felt isolated, which is great , if you are coming up here for an illicit rendevous and do not want to be found, because trust me, even in summer, I could tell that this plce just had an isolated, not exclusive, just soulless and lonely feel to it. My boyfriend said he felt completely ripped off. I actually felt more than that. It was like this wierd joke had been played on both of us to get us up to this overrated dorm-like accomodation. The pluses are the Staff. The restaurant/breakfast area has stunning views (wish we could have slept on the terrace!!) the restaurant staff genuine and warm -the front deask staff was good, maybe a little pretentious, felt like they had to keep up the Chaminade "image". My advice- stay somewhere else(even the Econo Lodge is better) and treat yourself to lunch and/or a sunset drink at the restaurant.

Loved the Chaminade

A bit off the beaten track, but once you're there, you won't want to leave. Reached by a 1/4 mile eucalyptus grove, this is a pretty large resort hidden in the woods. Every room had a private patio (surrounded by high privacy landscaping teeming with hummingbirds). The spa was great-we highly recommend the couples massage--well worth it. And once in the spa, you can stay as long as you like around a small pool or in the meditation room drinking tea or lemon flavord water listening to calming music. The staff was great, and took very good care of us, unobtrusively. The restaurant area had a loggia surrounding 3 sides for seeing the different (and beautiful) views, and a fire pit and space heaters. The food was just fine--3 or 4 stars, we ate there both nights. We took the long hike-about 2 miles-on the private trail and saw wonderful redwoods, streams, and birds--but not another soul! It was as if we had the whole world to ourselves! You'll love the Chaminade, too.

Just spent the weekend at the Chaminade. Had never been though always heard about it. Its fine, but not overwhelming. Room was large enough, linens clean and acceptable, though yes, the bathroom is a bit small.... and the 2nd sink did help out. However, the word resort is a bit of a stretch, have a bunch of kids working the desk, running shuttles, etc. and they are very nice, but at the end of the day a bunch of kids and not really "hotel staff", I'd say more like college kids working at the nearby hotel.
Pool seemed a tad worn and the spa while touted as new in the local paper seemed just a okay as well..... I was expecting more, especially since they charge a $15 dollar resort fee each day.
This place seemed more to me like a "conference center" vs. a resort. I can see how it would be perfect for corporate retreats and small conferences, etc. Not really the lap of romance or get away from it all....
Also, when I went to check out, there was a charge of 40 bucks from the fitness center. When I called down to the desk, I was told I had purchased a polo shirt (I hadn't). After much to-ing and fro-ing I had the charge removed and I guess someone got a free shirt since it was charged to my room and then removed.
If you are going to stay in Santa Cruz, stay at the Coast Hotel (on the beach) or even the Casa Blanca (across the street from the beach) or the nearby Venetian in Capitola for the true beach/Santa Cruz experience or for romance for a bit more $, the Black Pearl Cottage or for a resort on the ocean, the Seascape Resort instead.

Disappointed/Expected More

from A TripAdvisor Member
I changed hotels from the Coast Santa Cruz to the Chaminade for one night and regretted it. I expected the Chaminade to be just a little more upscale for the price, but it turned out to be equal if not lesser quality. The view at the Coast was fantastic, directly overlooking Monterrey Bay. I was charged extra for a 'forest view upgrade' at the Chaminade (as opposed to the parking lot view) and was disappointed to discover a power pole, power lines, and some cheap plastic furniture directly outside of our sliding glass doors. At the Chaminade, you will find a basic and clean room, but do not expect the 'luxury' that is advertised.

Hotel and Golf Package

from hundfschmidt
We signed up to stay at the Chaminade and play golf at Pasatiempo. The Hotel room was better than expected and the golf at Pasatiempo was a real treat. The people were friendly and courteous both at the hotel and at the course.

We did not eat at the hotel and instead went into town each night. The hotel provided a free ride to town, but you were on your own to get back. Taxis were not easy to find so plan ahead.

We'll be back!

A disappointment for the price...

from A TripAdvisor Member
Not what we expected from what their website says or for the price. Four Diamond hotel? Not sure what AAA was thinking if they gave this place a four diamond rating... Yes it was clean, but there had only been some basic cosmetic updating in the rooms. The walls are so thin we heard the pipes rattle each time our neighbor washed his hands or took a shower. The towels in the bathroom were more suitable for a one diamond hotel. On the good side, the bed was nice and comfy with good bed linens. Additionally, they have a good exercise center. Make sure you take into account the resort fee into your price comparison though, it only covers tip for the maid, the exercise facility and valet parking - which you most likely will not use as the property is spread out. Overall we thought it was over priced.

Better than the reviews here

from AZCarefree
After reading the reviews I was not expecting much, but found the Chaminade more than acceptable. The room was clean (no grubby furniture and the bathroom was spotless). There was a small bleach stain on the carpet near the door, but that didn't bother me too much. The down duvets were comfy, the room large enough with a table and a desk and an outside patio. The one drawback was the bathroom. It was about the size you'd expect at a Motel 6. Fortunately the room did have an extra sink outside the bathroom (again, a la Motel 6) and that helped. We ate at the casual restaurant and the food was so so, but I didn't find the furniture dirty.

The staff was friendly and helpful, providing recommendations on restaurants and driving directions and providing an umbrella when we badly needed one.

We recommend the Bittersweet Bistro highly for dinner.

Given the dearth of good places to stay in and around Santa Cruz I would consider coming back.

Top Local Tips for Santa Cruz

You must get in a cab to find a good restaurant This entire district is new and the good restaurants are at least a 20 minute cab ride away. If you like Shanghainese food, across the road in the China Life building there is an excellent restaurant called Shanghai Xiao Nan Guo. As it's still under construction, this district has little soul and no flavor of Beijing. Also, the construction means that there wil be loud noise starting at 6am in the morning.

Nice place for lunch! Go down to the end of the wharf in Santa Cruz and try Carniglia's.........nice bar and view!
