Nice stay at the Sandman

Okay, if we weren't upgraded to a poolside room I would have given it an average rating, but we were fortunate and we were pleasantly surprised. This is a moderate place, nothing fancy, but they have all the amenities you could need (including micro/refrigerator), large room, big bed. It was very, very quiet when we were there and the pool and jacuzzi were a nice touch! After we realized that we were about 1 mile from Downtown Santa Barbara, we were happy we chose the Sandman Inn. The staff was excellent and the price was right.

An average place to stay

We stayed two nights at the Sandman in August. The price was very reasonable and the extras, (such as pools, jacuzzi, A/C, fridge and microwave) made it a great deal.

It was a fine place to stay. Nothing fancy, but clean and well kept and when we were there very quiet.

We had a car and it was easy to get to the attractions all over town. We did not try the breakfast or the restaurant because of limited time, but will next time.

If you do not go expecting a fancy mega resort you will not be disappointed.

Got Zapped with extra charges!

On the day in June that I made a July reservation at the Sandman my credit card was used to pay a room charge for a different person with a different confirmation number. I felt violated! The hotel management had me spend time on the telephone to track the mistake made through some Lexington booking service. They then made no apologies,said mistakes happen and rather reluctantly refunded the $166 charged to my credit card. I will never stay with them again, and will not make a reservation by web site where the number can be misused at another hotel.

It was fine -nothing fancy, but clean and affordable. It wasn't particularly close to the water, but the hotels that were tended to be pretty expensive. The complimentary breakfast was weak, but edible.

I would have no problem staying here again.

Pleasantly Surprised

I stayed at this property last weekend and I was pleasantly surprised. Friendly staff, two pools, jacuzzi, beautiful flowers throughout the property, good continental breakfast, fantastic beds, a huge mall accross the street!!!! The only negative is that the motel is a few miles away from the downtown area. That could be a good thing too! I would definitely consider staying there again!

I stayed at the Sandman Inn in Sept 2000 and again in June 2003 and it was a great experience both times! Everyone & everything was terrific! The room had it all... fridge, cable, a/c, comfy beds.

I only made it to one of the pools/jacuzzi -just wonderful! Relatively close to the mission too as I recall. And plenty close to town!

Didn't care for that restaurant across the parking lot (can't remember if it was affiliated -don't think so???) but the pizza (delivered from across the street) was fabulous!

I'm about to book my 3rd visit there - I sure hope the place hasn't changed. That would just break my heart!

A Great value place to stay

When I booked the Sandman, I was a little nervous due to the inconsistent reviews. However, I was most pleasantly surprised! A simple room sure, but very clean. Hotel grounds were nice, lots of plants etc. Friendly staff. A little way from downtown and the beaches but easily accessable. Reasonable continental breakfast included and all day tea & coffee in the lobby. Overall, very good value for the money paid for the room.

What a nice place to stay. The grounds are so well kept & with all the flowers, plants & trees you would never know you are in the middle of the city. The staff was very friendly & helpful. The motel is set up so well, that you will never know there are almost 200 rooms. Very quiet. Rooms are older style, but are very clean. Will definetly stay here again. Also will tell my friends about this place.

Very Quiet

This hotel was wonderfully quiet. It is quite far from downtown but there was no problem getting to town for dinners. A very simple room but very relaxing. We found a wonderful restaurant called the Tee Off across the street in a strip mall. We were very leary from the outside but the food was fantastic. Prime rib is what they're known for and it was the best I've ever had.

Noisy, anti-social fellow guests

We reserved three rooms here for 24 & 25 Feb.2004 via Expedia. Initial inpressions were favourable - good reception area, reasonable grounds, good size rooms with very good beds and adequate facilities. So good in fact that as soon as we had unpacked we extended our stay by a further night. This turned out to be a mistake as one of the rooms close by the 3 rooms our family party of 6 Senior travellers had was occupied by a group of 3 uncouth, beer guzzling youths from Minnesota who kept the engine of their gas guzzling SUV running day and night and amused themselves by constantly playing with the vehicles Remote Control key.
A polite request made directly to them toned things down but it was later necessary to ask the management to intervene. The noise and nuisance of this anti-social behaviour was temporarily abated but once the security man had left, it became worse than ever with all 3 kids and, by then, their girl friends, shouting, bawling and skateboarding until 2am. We, like other nearby guests, were reluctant to call in security again for fear of any recriminations by these rather drunk young people to our own parked vehicles. We felt this situation reflected a serious management problem and that the distress and inconvenience caused to the majority of the hotels guests was not properly dealt with. The shabby, dingy restaurant provided a full and adequate breakfast but the one dinner we had there was possibly the worst meal we have had anywhere in the world. We could not recommend this Hotel.

Top Local Tips for Santa Barbara

Quiet Monday nights Not much going on on a Monday night in Santa Barbara!

Park in one of the Public Parking lots for the day then take the Downtown or Waterfront shuttle to destinations for 25 cents each way. This is more convenient and the parking fee is reasonable. If you don't have much time in Santa Barbara take a tour on the Land Shark. It is a great way to see an overview of the city. Definitely check out the Courthouse it is architecturally amazing. Go inside and see the mural room and up to the clock tower for a wonderful 360 degree panoramic view of Santa Barbara. It's free! Eat on Stearns Wharf -outside table at restaurant at the end of the wharf and watch the sun going down. It is beautiful!

Dining The immediate neighborhood has some excellent restaurants you can walk to if you don;t want to go downtown: Dinner: Kyoto on State and for breakfast: Jeannine's Bakery
