Historical Traveller Reviews of The Old Yacht Club Inn Hotel

Worth the price

from RKA
I didn't find the reviews here until after I made my reservations. After reading them carefully, I was prepared to move up the coast if I wasn't satisfied, but decided to take a chance anyway. The location was what I wanted.

The inn is completely what I would expect for the price. Food was good not great. Furnishings were clean, adequate, homey. Not fashionable in any way. Innkeeper was cordial but not really visible.
I was staying by myself and it was fine. I felt safe in the neighborhood, walked to the Pier and State Street shopping. It's not some lovely romantic experience, but you're not paying for that, afterall.

You may wish to bring earplugs for the train.

We decided to take our grandchildren to The Old Yacht Club Inn after staying there many years ago (and enjoying it immensely). We contacted the owner and asked if children were welcome (ages 8 and 13 and very well-behaved) and she assured us they were if we stayed across the street from the main house in The Beach House suite. Upon arrival, a teenager escorted us to our "house". After going up the musty and stained stairs, we were told to pick 2 bedrooms out of 3 (the other was then locked.) We had 1 bathroom for the 4 of us, and after wiping off the dirty bathroom floor, I discovered that the sink's drain did not work properly. We had a shower but no bathtub, and for $420+ a night we were given a half-used bottle of cheap shampoo. The children's bedroom was very small and smelled of mildew. Our master bedroom was very pleasant, but the t.v. did not work well. At breakfast we were served a poor excuse for an omelette, and when we tried to order milk for the children, we were charged extra. The innkeeper was extremely rude and intrusive and her teenage assistant complained to her about everything we did (like ordering the milk). The wine was very cheap and served in a jug, and they wouldn't serve fruit juice to us or the children during the "afternoon social". After telling the innkeeper of the broken t.v. and sink drain, she got VERY angry and nastily told us never to come back again. However, when we tried to get out of our second night, she insisted that we stay (we left before breakfast the next morning). We will NEVER EVER EVER consider staying here again, and after awhile, even the cheap motels across the streets began to look like The Plaza.

Satisfactory Experience

from TerryNeal
Stayed 3 nights at the Old Yacht Club Inn in Santa Barbara. Average experience. Lacks personal touch of dedicated host. Breakfasts were quite good. Rooms were very small and decor was rustic and old, not just antique. Location was good, though website would cause you to believe it was on the street fronting the beach. Website pictures of Inn and rooms are more glamorous than in actual life.

Misleading Website, poor customer service

from A TripAdvisor Member
Others have said what we experienced - the website said their location was a block from the beach but showed photos of an ocean view, so we assumed there would be an ocean view. Wrong. We came a very long way, wanted to stay by the ocean, asked to be released from the deal as we could have stayed elsewhere directly on the ocean for a less money, and were handled poorly we thought. The room we stayed in was adequate, and the manager did offer to upgrade us but the upgraded room was not what we needed (two beds), and our room off a garden area actually was preferable. What we wanted was an ocean view and they couldn't provide that. Regardless, it was not a fun experience; we felt mislead and then poorly treated. Ask questions before you book here so you know what you are getting. The breakfast was good however the coffee was not very good.

t do it.

YUCK. I can't think of one redeeming comment to make. We're still trapped here and I can't wait to get out. Old, dirty (I was shocked to find someone else's underwear in the closet) and way toooo close to the freeway and train. Police were at the front door when we arrived - we should have tuned into this hint and run the other way. Our room is supposed to be the nicest but the pink flowered wallpaper and black/tan plaid bedspread don't really lend to a B & B experience. It's way overpriced for what the room provides.

I'm furious with myself for making this's way off the beaten path so if you want to be isolated from any kind of amenities, this may be your place...near the zoo is the best thing I can think restaurants, no markets, etc.

Do your homework if you're looking for a B & B.

Slightly disappointed

My wife and I were very excited to see the town of Santa Barbara. After reading the reviews of this B & B, we were a little hesitant to book, but the price was right. Additionally, we had read some fairly positive reviews. The rooms were just average. Nothing fancy, but not dirty or in disrepair. We had a great time at dinner on State Street the night of our stay. The innkeepers were pretty much non-existent during our stay. The breakfast was definitely a let down. I wasn't expecting anything gourmet, but something more creative than the two pancakes we were offered. You can definitely hear the train, but it wasn't that bothersome.

Will try a different place next time we're in town.

Run Down , Neglected , Disappointing !!!!

from maryphx
Unfortunately I had not read the reviews of this B&B before I booked. I had read on some of the sites as well as in a guide book and they must have been very old reviews. The staff was friendly enough but the inn has definite problems. We had problems with ants that was never taken care of during the stay. The train and highway noise was an issue but if the place had been cute I could have dealt with this. Peeling wallpaper, rusty shampoo holder and cracks in the shower along with many other maintenance issues. The guide books list a 3 course gourmet breakfast. My idea of both is different. This place wasn't cheap even with the internet "hot deals>" Where are the owners? Don't waste your money!!! Mary, Phoenix, AZ

We escaped as fast as we could pack

from Oberski
I was captured by the add,'charm by the sea, the perfect romantic escape'. We couldn't wait to escape from this place. We had just attended our daughters wedding and a week of celebration, and choose the Old Yacht Club Inn for a couple of days to relax. The Old Yacht Club is sandwiched between two run down courtyard type apartments, with cars coming and going all night.Things started off badly when the person checking us in could not open our room door, the lock was jammed. Once inside, we were shocked. The room was furnished with less than yard sale stuff. Our room the Belle Caruso listed a private patio, a sitting room and fireplace. The fireplace was an electric heater just 3feet tall, and when turned on a light illuminated a paper background made to resemble flames and a fan made the flames dance. Truly romantic. The bathroom was an addition from a closet, and the construction was sub-standard, and smelled of mildew. We were kept awake with leaking faucets, trains passing through and of course the couple next to us untill 1:00 am when I banged on their window. The property is in poor condition and suffers from lack of regular maintenance and pride of ownership. When we reported our dissatisfaction to the owners the next morning they were put off by our comments, and when I insisted on a refund for our pre-paid second night, they deducted $75.00 for a cancellation fee. Insulting. Yes, however, the two envelopes on the night stand soliciting tips for the housekeeper and waitstaff said it all. The Motel 6, two doors down was probably a better bet.

Very nice place

We actually received a free upgrade to a suite. We only stayed one night and I found that the people that took our room were there for four nights.

We were treated to wine, cheese, and grapes in the afternoon. Breakfast was very good with freshly squeezed orange juice. The rooms were well decorated.

The Inn has a great location - just a couple of blocks away from the beach. It is also at the end of East Beach's bike path. My wife and I took two bikes and had a wonderful time biking along the trail.

Top Local Tips for Santa Barbara

Not getting overcharged on quaint inn Old Yacht Club inn is very cosy and a great value. Had reservations from an internet review but thingk the person was out of their mind.

The Santa Barbara courthouse We received a tip to go to the Santa Barbara courthouse from a fellow couple staying at the Old Yacht Club Inn. I believe it was built in the 1920's and has some great architecture. It is a wonderful place to walk around (inside and out) and there is a tower you can go up in that you shouldn't miss. It offers tremendous views of all of Santa Barbara. Best of all, it is free! I would highly recommend not missing this stop on your vacation.

The Santa Barbara courthouse We visited the Santa Barbara Courthouse at the advice of a fellow couple staying at the inn. It was built in the 1920's and has amazing architecture and landscape. It is free and open to the public. Be sure and go into the tower. The tower provides spectacular 360 degree views of Santa Barbara. This was one of our favorite stops on our trip. I highly recommend it.
