A bit disappointed

We picked this hotel based on the Trip Advisor reviews and booked two nights of our honeymoon there. Maybe our expectations had been set too high but we just really didn't think it was worth the money. First of all we were put in a room facing the back (a car park and a wall) which we were a bit disappointed about considering we had booked quite far in advance. The room was small and dark with no fridge (which is a necessity in hot and sunny California). It was also very noisy with people banging doors and talking loudly throughout the night. Considering that it was just $50 less a night than our suite at the Venetian in Las Vegas and twice as much as the beautiful rooms at the Pepper Tree Inn in Palm Springs, we just did not think the price was justifiable.

Although cleaniness and charm are important characteristics to look for in hotel accomodations, comfort and quiet are necessities. You just can't appreciate the decor of any place when your bed feels like a sack of coils and you can hear your neighbors making noise throughout the night and morning.

It was my first time staying at the Marina Beach Motel and based on the reviews and the lovely images of the motel, I was expecting a stellar experience. The room was clean and appeared to be comfortable. However, once it was time for sleep I learned that the motel walls were paper thin. Consequently, I could hear my neighbors periodically making noise throughout the night and morning. In the morning, I was awakened several times by the sound of doors opening and closing. I also noticed that once a person vacated their room in the morning, the cleaning personnel would immediately begin preparing the room for the next guest. This just contributed to the noise. Most hotels wait at least until 9:30 a.m to clean their rooms so as not to disturb other guests. The motel does provide a security service that will address noise issues. However, the noise problem was not a result of excessive noise, but due to poorly constructed walls.

The bed was extremely uncomfortable. It felt as if I was sleeping on a sack of coils. I spent most of the night trying to figure out how to position myself so as to avoid back and hip pain.

Between the noise and the uncomfortable bed, I gave up and got up at 7:45 a.m. even though I was exhausted and had planned on sleeping in until later.

I went to the continental breakfast and hoped to find some wheat bread and at least two kinds of fruit juice. The motel only offered orange juice and white bread or high carb breakfast food items such as bagels, cinnamon rolls, etc. The only fruit offered was oranges and apples.

I tried to communicate my experience to the lobby staff, but they just seem uninterested.

Perhaps if you are hard of hearing and can stand sleeping on a hard floor then you will enjoy your stay at the Marina Beach Motel.

My sister and children and I stayed in the Marina Beach Motel on Memorial Day and the day after. I picked this place because of the positive reviews and I have to say I was not disappointed. Everything about this place was solid, sturdy, picturesque and quaint, from the cobblestone driveway and homey center courtyard to the wooden deck eating area with overflowing potted plants which wrapped around the reception and lobby where crispy layered pastries, scones, cereal, juice, coffee and tea beckoned every morning from an antique buffet. Our room was clean and homey with plenty of drawers, shelves and an amoire for all of our things. We were a party of four and our room had two queen beds and a twin bed, plenty of sleeping room for all of us plus a kitchenette-dining area and a full bath. There were windows in the front and the back of our room which allowed for some nice cross ventilation of the cool ocean breezes. The walk along Bath St. to the beach took only about a minute. When we chose to walk in the direction opposite the beach we found ourselves in a beautiful residential area which was marred only by the fact that we could never afford to live there ourselves. We quickly tried to bannish that thought from our minds in order to enjoy the rest of our stay in Santa Barbara.
The walk from the motel to State Street was quite manageable especially with supportive athletic shoes and coming back laden with shopping bags we were able to catch a ride back on The City Trolley for only a quarter each. We ate at a fabulous Mexican Restaurant 'El Torrito' right across from the ocean and had great fun shopping on State St. and buying goodies from the Farmers Market which sets up on State Street every Tuesday afternoon at 4:00pm. We had a terrific time in Santa Barbara and I was very pleased as was everyone else in my party that we chose to stay in the Marina Beach Motel. The motel staff was very accomodating and helpful, the property was excellently maintained and the price was very reasonable. (I made our reservations in January). Great Place

My wife and I stayed here for a week at the end of May. As we were staying for a week we were given a special rate for our "Kitchenette" Room which was very good value. We booked here after reading the reviews on this web site and we were more than pleased. The room was very clean, bright and homely. The breakfasts on the patio were very pleasant and adequate. All of the staff were very friendly and helpful and the Internet Access in the lobby was very useful. The location couldn't be better. I would recommend the Marina Beach to everyone.

However, I must say a couple of things, firstly what a shame a train runs through the middle of town. The Marina Beach is probably as far away as you can get whilst being close to the sea but the trains still sound their horns all through the night - and you can certainly hear them! And secondly a message to Santa Barbara - drop outs and beggars are spoiling your town - Get rid of them!

Great SB Place to Stay

We were very happy with the accomodations, service, staff, and fortunately the 3 days of 75 degree sunshine! We had 2 queen room which was huge with a living room in the middle and a full kitchenette with stove/oven. We did not expect all of this and felt much better about our price which was $170 midweek and $214 on Friday. Travelling with 2 young kids can be stuffy in a hotel room , but here there was plenty of space for all. We all enjoyed our easy breakfast and then off to the beach in walking distance, marina for whale watching in walking distance or $0.25 shuttle to downtown within walking distance. THe staff was very personable and willing to help with activity suggestions. Overall, it was a very clean, pleasant relaxing place. Only negative - you do hear that train whistle a few times a night but so does most of beachfront Santa Barbara. By the third night, we slept through it. WE will stay here again!!

Bright, Cheery, and Clean

Expedia was pushing me toward $300/night hotels when I ran across this place on TripAdvisor. I have to agree with the other reviewers, this place is a great value for the money. I paid $162/night for Fri and Sat night for a rainy weekend in March. Spend the money you save on a nice meal.

The location is great: A block away from the beach and two blocks away from State Street. The best parts of State Street with all the restaurants ands hops are beyond convenient walking distance, but I had a car and found it quite convenient. I didn't take up the Motel on the bicycles that they offered, but I'm sure you could reach downtown with those.

The lobby offered a free continental breakfast and an Internet-connected PC for you to use. Even better, all of the rooms have 802.11b wireless access, so it's worthwhile to bring your mobile computer to research restaurants and excursions.

This motel is the perhaps the only one that does not show deceptive wide-angle images of their guest rooms on their website. What you see on their website is what you get. I stayed in the queen room. One could call their rooms cramped or cozy, but I think they really make up for it with their cheery aesthetic. Also, all rooms are equipped with heat/ac.

My one complaint with the rooms is the lack of soundproofing. If you have loud neighbors, you will hear every single word of their conversation. For me, this manifested when the guests in the room next door was saddling up to leave at 7:00am. They might as well have been talking at the foot of my bed.

My husband and I (plus our doggy) stayed at the Marina Beach Motel in December 2004. The room was very cozy and the staff was friendly. The hotel offers lots of privacy and is in a great location. Despite the torrential rain, we had a fabulous time. We will definitely stay here again!

My dog and I stayed here in 01/05 precisely because of all the terrific reviews on this website. It really is a lovely motel in a great location, just a block from the beach. The price was reasonable, the room was clean and comfortable, and the staff very friendly and helpful. It was wonderful to be able to sit out on the patio and eat the incredible continental breakfast. (The only drawback was the fact that I was awakened by neighbors who came in late at night and didn't realize how thin the walls are.) I will definitely stay here again.

Stayed at the marina beach hotel for one night i the end of october 2004 and loved it. We payed $109 for a queen, a bit pricy for a motel I guess, but you can probably get a better rate if you make an advance internet reservation, which we didn´t. On the other hand this is not your typical motel. The rooms are clean and pretty , if you like the romantic style. You have free internet access in the lobby and you get a great breakfast (coffee, juice, muffins, cereals, bagels, etc) which is included in the price. Close to the beach, marina and the center. We definitely recommend it!

Cloud Climber Jeep Wine Tour We had Cloud Climbers pick us up at our hotel in their 6 passenger Jeep and were treated to gorgeous scenery, wonderful wine, a cheerful driver (Jane!), and a delicious lunch.

Pedestrian and Transient Friendly Town During our stay I saw two police officers stop cars that did not yield for pedestrians in the crosswalks. Folks staying at any hotel near or "on" the beach must cross a busy four lane street to get to the beach. Thank you for this Santa Barbara. However, the number of transients are saturating the beaches and parks.

Unique Breakfast at the Brown Pelican If you are looking for a real nice place to eat breakfast, check out the brown pelican. It's right on a somewhat secluded beach. Food is decent, but the atmosphere is unmatched.Last time we were in town, we had problems finding unique brekfast spots and this place is definatelt worthy.
