Our New Home Away From Home!

from suntraveler
This is such a charming hotel! Five of us gals spent a long weekend (May 27 - 30, 2005) in Santa Barbara and LOVED this hotel! I plan on not only returning but informing friends of the bargain we found. We paid approximately $180 a night. We were on a budget so we chose a place with a kitchen to curb some eating costs since Santa Barbara can be super pricey. We wanted to save our cash for the happy hours and wine tours...

The room had two queen beds, balcony, as well as a full kitchen (with microwave, utensils, plates, etc.,!). We brought an aero bed for the fifth gal and felt a bit guilty about "sneaking" someone in... no worries! After the second night, housekeeping began leaving FIVE towels rather than four. The rooms were super clean and the entire staff very friendly. The free continental breakfast in the morning consisted of bagels, cereal, fruit, pastries, orange juice and the basic tea and coffee in addition to afternoon wine and cheese as well as milk and cookies in the evening!

They have a small and well-kept pool with very comfortable lounge chairs to sunbathe. The lobby has free internet access for guests and an abundance of maps for those (like us) interested in the area's wineries. The hotel is also tucked right off the freeway!

It's a short three blocks to State Street where all the cute shops and night life clubs and bars are located and a short two to three blocks to the beach. You'll see lots of the expensive hotels along the beach and wonder how anyone can pay hundreds of dollars more when they could simply walk a couple of blocks?

Great Place 3 Blocks from the Beach

We stayed for one night at the Inn by the Harbor and were very happy. Our room was a "Queen Deluxe" with a full kitchen. The beach was about 3 blocks away. We really liked the Wine/Cheese reception at night and the nice continental breakfast in the morning. We paid about $160 and it was worth it for our stay.

Nice Rooms

We just stood here for one night in December, the rooms were very nice and the service was great. The only thing I wasn't fond of was the location, it was very close to the beach two blocks which is walking distance, but there were some apartments next door that weren't very nice. We had a great time. If you're not into views then this is a great place to stay. The "breakfast" was o.k. bagels, fruits, coffee, and cereal.

Good Value

I booked 3 rooms about 2 months in advance via the internet.Rates for the weekend a little higher but for Santa Barbara, at$140 ,I thought it was a good rate. The rooms were clean, spacious, comfortable beds and mine even had a kitchen with a full size refrigerator, stove and microwave.
The continental breakfast is included in the room rate and was satisfactory and convenient.
I was especially grateful to the gentleman on duty the Sunday I checked out.I had tire problems and he knew what facility was open, called for me and showed me exactly how to get there. The location isn`t the most aesthetic but the rest of the city makes up for it.I would book there again.

Ok, but not great

We stayed here for just one night in mid-August of 2004. We stayed here after staying at a great B&B place in Yosemite and Courtyard Marriott, so by comparison, this place was not that great. Building feels very old from inside the rooms, the room was clean for the most part but something was leaking water to the floor in the bathroom. Our room had a kitchen, it was clean but again, looked old. Continental breakfast was fine but doesn't compare to the hot breakfast at Courtyard or B&Bs. Staff was pretty friendly. Maybe we were lazy, we actually drove to the beach cuz it was kinda far for me. We went on a weekday, there weren't too many people, so we actually parked right on the pier. If we spent $100 or less, I wouldn't complaint much, but for $160 a night, I'd look elsewhere next time.

Enjoyed our stay

Recently stayed at Inn by the Harbor,July 11-13,2004. It was delightful. The complex is very clean, the staff is friendly and helpful, all rooms have been recently redone, all rooms are air conditioned, they serve an expanded breakfast every morning and the complex is completely non-smoking. The location is an easy walk to the beach and you can walk to State St.

Quite nice

I stayed here in March 2002 after booking on the internet. Now I know to check any bookings I make, as I got there at 8.30pm to find they had no record of my reservation. But luckily there was plenty of vacancies.
It was a very nice room, and very comfortable (especially after being in a youth hostel for a few weeks) and very clean. And a very quiet location too. The complimentary continental breakfast was yummy, and a lot more choice than I expected. I didn't use the pool, but it looked nice. The staff were friendly, and the maintenance man was very helpful when I thought my shower was broken - it wasn't! That was a bit embarrassing! Very pleasant stay anyway.

comfortable and clean

My girlfriend and I took the Amtrak from Glendale, CA to SB this last week and reserved one night at the Inn BTH. It was only 3 blocks from the train station (they sent a shuttle to pick us up) and 2 1/2 blocks to the ocean. This is an older property that shows its age, but is also kept very clean. No A/C but nice floor fans in each room. Pool & spa.
The beds and furniture are not as comfortable as a top notch hotel, but the trade off is price. We asked for the special price advertised on the Amtrak web site and got a nice room with a queen bed for $132 on a Saturday night - great price for a clean & very convenient SB hotel.
Very friendly staff. As it turned out our Sunday return train was cancelled due to the fires in Simi Valley, and we stayed one additional night. They gave us an even larger room for a great accomodation price (the hotel was nearly empty on a Sunday night). They offer a cont'l bkfst each morning, wine & crackers in the late afternoon, and cookies in the early eve. We travel alot and usually stay in 4 star or better properties. Considering the very reasonable price and great location, cleanliness and service, we would very strongly recommend the Inn by the Harbor.

Nice for families

from meo
The location was central to all the fun activites in SB. Easy walk/jog to the beach. The room and kitchen were clean and the decor adequate.
The cont breakfast was fine and there is wine and cheese served in the afternoon and cookies and milk in the evening. It's great for a family vacation on a budget, but not for a romantic getaway. The plumbing was a bit noisy especially from the other adjacent rooms and the location is next to a busy highway. It was a good stay overall.

Inn definitely not by the harbor...

I was expecting a quaint inn and found an old apartment like complex. The rooms were small, but nicely decorated and clean. We had a huge sliding door facing a walkway, which I felt like somebody was walking by every few minutes. Our view outside the sliding door was of the other rooms. However, it was very close to the beach, Main Street, and Stearn's Wharf. Great location.. accomodations were okay.

Top Local Tips for Santa Barbara

great hikes and swims Take a hike up to Inspiration point for a fabulous view of the whole coastal area. Swim in the Ocean year round with the Ocean Ducks swim club (they meet Sunday mornings around 9am.

the electric bus is GREAT Use this to get up State Street and then walk back down. It costs all of $0.25.

Places to dine Palazzio's - family portions; tasty pasta. Brophy Bros. - best clam chowder; go during off-peak times since reservations are not allowed. Taj - excellent Indian if you are looking for something different; no lines!
