The Oceana Hotel is beautifully located on prime beach area in Santa Barbara which probably accounts for their rates. The ambience is almost non-existent, the 'remodeling' of the rooms in faux Country French is half-hearted, with uncomfortable furniture (aside from the bed which was fine) and the housekeeping was less than pristine.

My stay at the Oceana was disappointing. We had to move rooms twice because of a booking mixup, and then were overcharged on our bill after the night manager had specifically quoted us a different price. The front hotel staff seemed not to know the ropes, perhaps they were in training. I had heard such good things about this hotel, and I will not try it again.

Stayed here on a brief "family vacation" weekend. We liked the "cottage feel" of the hotel, and residential feel of neighborhood, but found the staff a bit snooty. Room was comfortable, not luxurious. The location is great, particularly its proximity to the local shuttle bus stops, the harbor and pier, and Little Sambo's original restaurant. Easy walk from the train station down neighborhood streets to the back of the hotel. Have recommended others stay there and they enjoyed it.

Historical Traveller Reviews of Hotel Oceana

This is a wonderful place to stay!

What a terrific hotel! Central location, comfortable beds, excellent friendly staff, fairly priced and a wonderful breakfast. We loved it and will be back as soon as we can. This is a 3 star hoel with 4 star service. Everyone was so helpful. Some of the other hotels along the beach are not nearly as nice.

After having stayed at the Oceana and after having read these reviews I really hope anyone that reads this takes my review seriously. I work at the Univeristy of California at Santa Barbara but I live in the Bay Area so I travel to Santa Barbara a lot and my hotel of choice will always be the Hotel Oceana. I am writing this review because I am concerced that some of the reviews that have been submitted are terribly dramatic. This is a great hotel with an excellent beach front location. It is within close walking distance of some of the finest restaurants in Santa Barbara as well as from the infamous shopping arena offered on nearby State Street. The service has far exceeded my expectations for the those of a small hotel, and i am worried that unreasonable people are venting frustrations on this hotel and unjustly labeling it a poor choice. I have not read one constructive criticsim of this hotel which further refutes my position that the readers of these reviews are unfortunately being mislead with slanderous critiques. The Hotel Oceana is the perfect place for anyone who truly wishes to recieve a true taste of Santa Barbara in a fun, friendly environment.

Absolutely Perfect

Everything was wonderful! The hotel is in a great ocean front location and very close to downtown. My husband and I loved the comfortable bed and the Aveda products in the room. The front desk was extremely helpful in giving us information and the concierge and bellmen were very helpful with everything. I will definitely return!

Yuck!

Way overpriced and overrated. Great location, but that was it. Carpet was filthy, bottom sheet didn't cover matress all the way, so mattress pad showed through, Aveda products, but so stingy with them we ran out of lotion, very thin walls, had to call for batteries for remote control for TV, had to fix phone myself, the list goes on and on. This is excellent example of completely false advertising!

Quaint and Charming Beachside Hotel

My family stayed in this hotel when I got married in Santa Barbara on Sept. 27th. We had at least 6 rooms booked, and all of them were great!! They were very clean, spacious, tastefully decorated, with nice amenities!! Downright charming!!! The price was extremely reasonable, considering this is SANTA BARBARA, where rooms are very pricey!!! If you're looking for a resort, go to the Bacara. If you're looking for a nice place to stay while you explore Santa Barbara, this place is perfect! My only gripe is having to pay for television access!!! I've never seen this anywhere else!!!

In a NUTSHELL Do not stay in this overpriced, misleading, MOTEL! We were EXTREMELY unhappy and disappointed, esp. for the price we paid for what they claim an 'OCEAN VIEW' room. Apparently, their definition of 'ocean view' is a view of boats, and noisy pool area. I call this a glorified Motel 6 (some Motel 6 are even better!). We wished that we read more reviews regarding this motel before we checked in. I can totally relate to the reviews of others no privacy, sheets aren't changed everyday (unless you request it), the rooms are as big as a storage unit, floors squeaking, wall units swaying, and carpets are stained. To top it all off - they have the nerve to charge $9.00 a day for parking, a tiny space we had to fight for every single time we were there. This is definitely the worst place we've ever stayed! If you are one of those who love to be cool forget this place. This place has no A/C, so you will be forced to open your windows and hear every single passerby down the hall, and the kids' noises playing in the pool. The curtains don't close all the way so unless you are an exhibitionist, this will not be a big deal. You can also forget taking a nap in the afternoon because the staff will bug the hell out of you (knocking on your door regardless of the 'do-not-disturb' sign) to check on their laughable 'refreshment center' inside your room which consist of a 1 bag of Pretzel, 1 bottled water and an M&M, worth at least $5.00 each!!!Try Double Tree, Four Seasons or Bacarra Resort (for about equal or a bit more price).

Okay

We brought the kids and grandparents and booked two connecting rooms so that my husband and I could attend our evening function and have the grandparents be in the next room with the connecting door open while the kids slept. We were informed upon arrival that there are no connecting rooms and that our rooms had been booked in seperate buildings. That was resolved with the front desk. We ended up in the same building but on different floors. The room was spacious with a king and a queen but there was no closet and only a very small 3 drawer dresser also being used as the t.v. stand. The carpet and curtains were stained and filthy and I was glad my 5 month old wasn't crawling yet. The beds were suprisingly comfortable and the sheets were clean and white. I was not pleased when my 4 year old was taking a shower (no bathtub) and the water suddenly and instantly became scalding for about 30 seconds then went cold. Room service comes from a local restaurant which does not open until 6pm and took about 45 minutes to deliver. Fine for relaxing adults but it didn't go over so well with my starving 4 year old. I probably would not return for the price.

A very nice hotel.

Charming, peaceful hotel right across the street from the beach. We are writing this review from our hotel room because we don't want to forget to tell people what a terrific stay we had. We loved the Aveda bath products and high-end linen on the beds. Our room was not large but with all the patios and other areas to sit we were only in the room to sleep anyway. Hotel is fairly priced for Santa Barbara. We will definitely return.

Checked into this place and about an hour later checked right out again. We paid for an Ocean View room but there was no place to sit and enjoy that room -- one chair and a small table for 2 people.

The noise from the pool and the street would have been enough to end our visit, but the thought of spending much time in the overpriced motel room made us leave.

Check out the Harbor View Hotel just down the street -- 3 times the room at about the same price.

Beach House Chic - NO

from forgetdomani
This is not a hotel but a motel which has placed cotton sheets on the bed, Aveda products in the bathroom and has the audacity to charge over $200/night. The carpet was stained and wet while the lack of air conditioning meant the windows were always open only to hear every passerby while you tried to sleep. To add insult to injury, the pool was so full of shrieking toddlers in diapers (how's that for disgusting) that we felt we were in a scene from Caddyshack. When I asked the management if one of the 2 pools could be designated as an adult pool, I was treated indifferently. I demanded that we be allowed to cancel our remaining night and we hightailed it out of there; spending a blissful final evening of our vacation at El Encanto.

Top Local Tips for Santa Barbara

Santa Barbara Santa Barbara is a one night stay unless you are all bout the beach. VERY CASUAL if that is your thing. Downtown needs sprucing up. There are so many better beach places to go. The wine country near Santa Barbara is better. Go see Solvang and Los Olivos! Too many old homeless hippies...I'd rather see them in Santa Cruz, not in Santa Barbara.

Zoo day If you want to be outside go to the zoo.

Must - See Do make time to visit the Biltmore, Santa Barbara's grand dame.
