College Dorm Only Worse

Ha! Hated it. Beware there are no "gatherings" in your room. Two of my friends that were also staying in the hotel came to visit me in my room and we were handed a good neighbor policy that you could not gather in your room. We felt like we were in a college dorm room. If I'm paying $200 per night, I think my friends should be allowed to visit. If a complaint is filed you are expected to pay for the room that is complaining in addition to being asked to leave. We were laughing but in no way obnoxious. A simple "keep it down" and we would have gotten the point. I would have never booked a room here if I knew they had such ridiculous policies.

Disappointed

I was really disappointed. The room was clean and well decorated, but I was surprised how small it was. Then I was even more disappointed to find that they gave me the worst room in the place! Elevator noise to one side, stair noise on the other, and to top it off, the fire door in the hallway was banging all night. I complained the following morning and they gave me a break on the price - I told them they should never sell a room like that! Terrible. I know I probably could've said something on the night, but I had already unpacked, showered, and was ready to crash when I realized what was going on. I am sure the rooms on the corners, away from the elevator and all the noise, are okay - so make sure to ask for those if you want to get a decent night's sleep. The hotel is conveniently located right next to State Street -all the great shops and restaurant and bars are right there.

Better Than Expected

My husband & I recently stayed at the Holiday Inn Express in Santa Barbara. The staff was very accommodating and the room was very clean and well maintained. The only draw back to our stay was the room's location. It was in the corner of two intersecting streets on the first floor. The constant noise of people walking by and vehicles passing by made it difficult to sleep. Apparently, the hotel was sold out and had no other rooms for us to change to. Next time if we go back to Santa Barbara, I would request a room on the second or third floors. The complimentary breakfast in the morning was a plus, and the hotel's location was great, right off the main street.

Funky Charm....Be sure to stay in the main building

I recently stayed 2 nights at the Holiday Inn Express. I booked primarily due to the reviews I had read on tripadvisor. The first night, we were on the first floor in the annex building, facing the street. Practically the entire street wall is windows - which was a bit odd. Perhaps this had been a storefront at one time. The windows have some sort of treatment so no one can see in, but you can see out. The night noise wasn't bad, but I did hear the plumbing noise as indicated by another poster. Unfortunately, a homeless person parked outside our room in the early morning and spent about 15 minutes yelling obsenities, and then started sobbing. I called the front desk, and asked them if they could do something, and they did get the person to leave. I asked if we could move to a quieter room for the 2nd night, and the hotel management readily agreed. We packed up our things, and upon our return, they had moved everything into a 3rd floor room in the main building. This was much nicer (and quieter). Although the rooms are clean, they are a bit funky in layout. There is no built-in closet, and the TVs are not directly across the beds, but are next to one bed. Depending on your taste, this is funky and charming. I am rating them with a cautious 'above average', primarily as the management was so responsive to our request. If you don't mind a bit of funkiness,then staying in the main building is the way to go.
Extra note, we had a pretty good, inexpensive dinner at the Thai restaurant nearby on State Street.

Good, Bad and The Ugly!

The Good: Charming, but small rooms. Pleasant Employees at the front dest. Rooms are spotless. Good location for walking.
The Bad: Santa Barbara has allowed the "Bum" situation to get out of hand. C'mon people clean up your city! The cigarette smoke was almost unbearable everywhere we walked, for this reason I will never stay in town again! My lungs are still hurting.
The Ugly!! Did I mention cigarette smoke and bums?
Do yourself a favor, save your pocket change, and check-in at San Ysidro Ranch!

Great place in SB!

My girlfriend and I stayed one night in December 2005 for a quick getaway weekend. I've only been to Santa Barbara once and never stayed overnight, so I had booked this hotel based on the reviews of this site.

The hotel was easy to find and parking was okay. The hotel has a valet, but apparently he was on a lunch break, so we self-parked ($7 per night). No biggie. Location is perfect, only a block to State Street.
The folks at the front desk were really friendly and we were able to check in early. Our room was perfect! It is an old hotel, built about 1916, but is modern. Our room had a brick wall, which was really beautiful and accented the history of the building. The room was extremely clean and well appointed. The bath fixtures were beautiful and the room was decorated perfectly.
The top floor has a nice patio which would be a great place to have a few drinks before bed. The bed was comfortable and the room was plently big.
We took advantage of the continental breakfast. The selection was better than most. Seating is a bit scarce as the breakfast area is a bit small.
The desk clerk told us we would have to remove our vehicle by checkout because of repaving. When we passed by the hotel about six hours after checkout time, there wasn't a sign of paving. Seems to be a motivation to have guests remove their vehicles.
Overall, our stay was very pleasant and we'd stay there again without hesitation.

ve never stayed at a Holiday Inn like it

Most Holiday Inn's are bland, modern buildings with no character. This one is quite different, it was built in 1917 and while the rooms are clean & modern, the reception and outside of the buildings look fantastic. All rooms have free wireless internet for the businessman and a wall mounted Plasma TV to keep the kids amused.

We had the same receptionist for check in and check out, he was really friendly and helped us with directions with our hire car; Santa Barbara itself is full of interesting restaurants, bars and shops and is well worth a visit if you are in the area.

What a pleasant surprise! I have stayed at numerous Holiday Inns throughout the UK, Europe and the USA and this was nothing like the standard, corporate image you usually encounter. Sometimes when travelling on business it's nice to know what you're going to get.. but when you're on holiday it's nice for things to be a little bit different.

The location, as previously reported, couldn't be better.. right in the centre of town. Our room was quiet and comfortable.. the decor was traditional with many of the original features maintained. There was a flatscreen TV with plenty of stations.. nice toileteries in the bathroom ..comfy bed etc. OK the breakfast was typical Holiday Inn stodge but we originally booked for one night and stayed for 3.
A few days later we checked into the Holiday Inn Express in Fisherman's Wharf, San Francisco which was a real disappointment in comparison.. the hotel and the location.

for $150 a night this hotel is great... good location right off state street.
the room had three windows that overlooked the street so there was a bit of noise at night, but after living in nyc it didnt bother us much. i can see how it might bother people that are used to quiet at night.
the bathroom was updated and the bed was comfortable.
also they have free hi speed wireless internet and free continental breakfast.
ive only been to santa barbara once so i dont have anything to compare it to there , but im sure its one of the best values in the area.

Clean and Nice

October 2004. We booked this hotel knowing nothing and what a great surprise. So clean and nice. A nice sized room with a comfortable bed. The bathroom was so clean it looked new and I loved the toiletries. Would definitely recommend this hotel.

Top Local Tips for Santa Barbara

For seafood, try out Enterprise If you’re craving seafood, try Enterprise Fish Co. (225 State Street; 805-962-3313). Their fish is extremely fresh, and their sides are delicious (the veggies and fries are equally crisp!). Everything is cooked over a large mesquite grill that you can watch from most of the tables in the restaurant.

dinner We strolled through the town and had dinner at Downey's, the best rated restaurant in Santa Barbara. Although the dinner was good, we wouldn't rate it 28 (Zagat score), it's more like 24-26. We passed by Arigato Sushi and it was packed on a Tuesday night.

Don't Miss A short walk to the SB Courthouse...The view from the tower is exceptioonal. The building is a working courthouse but it is also a cultural must see. Next door is the Library which house the Faulkner Gallery. It's free and features local artists some being quite good. As you stroll around town there are numerous gardens and parks. Take your time and walk a few blocks off the main drag you'll be rewarded. Don't miss the harbor.
