Good try, Bad Beds

Eagle Inn, near the harbor in Santa Barbara had a nice idea, buy up a cute old house and some local bungalows- Start a B&B!

Forgot to buy good beds. Mine was thin, old and worn out. Feet higher than middle. Pain! Pain! I checked out another room in the main building- Same beds.

Our bungalow was cute, an old apartment with kitchen. But the bad bed over shadowed all.

At over $250/night--

Don't go therel.

Quiet oasis close to attractions

We had had the pleasure of spending Memorial Day weekend at the Eagle Inn during our very first visit to beautiful Santa Barbara. This lovely inn is about 3 long blocks from State Street, and 2 blocks from the beach. We walked or rode a rented tandem to all our destinations. State Street was bustling when we went, and we were glad to have a quiet inn to retreat to when we were done with each day's activities. We checked in very late (Amtrak was 5 hours behind; not unusual, we found out the hard way!), so we ended up in a downgraded room that was still lovely, nonetheless. Our windows opened, and a ceiling fan kept the room cool. The room was about 300 square feet, newly decorated, painted in warm contemporary colors, with nice designer touches. The microwave, mini-fridge and TV were all behind cabinet doors; the king bed had a pillow-top mattress. The bathroom was fully tiled, very clean, with quality bath linens. The included continental breakfast was fine; a large fruit salad and assortment of breakfast breads and cereal; juice, tea and coffee. We skipped it one morning to walk over to the original Sambo's 2 blocks away. The staff was courteous, with the morning crew especially helpful in directing us to recommended activities for us first-timers. My only complaints were a bathroom door on spring hinges that would not stay open, and no ice anywhere on the premises. Otherwise, I would highly recommend this delightful, reasonably-priced lodging.

Too many warts!

How were we disappointed? Let me count the ways:

1. Second floor room, heavy luggage, no elevator or luggage assistance.

2. No ice machine or vending machine on the premises - required walking 3 blocks to a 7-11 to get a Diet Coke.

3. No Kleenex in the room. Asked receptionist for some, she said she would take care of it - never delivered.

4. Small bathroom with pedestal sink - no place to set anything (except on the toilet).

5. Left the room on Saturday at 10 a.m. and hung the "Please make up room" hangar on the doorknob. Returned at 9 p.m. - the hangar had been placed on the inside doorknob, but the room hadn't been touched!

The only positive experience we had was the proximity to the beach, but I'm certain that for the $220/night rate that we were charged, we could have found a place that didn't have all of the "warts" of the Eagle Inn.

We were looking forward to our stay at the Eagle Inn for some peace and quiet and much needed rest, and we were not disappointed. We had hoped for a room with whirlpool tub, but they were all sold out, so we had a de luxe king with fireplace and balcony on the second floor of this lovely old Spanish building. The balcony looked out into a tree, so we felt completely private and away from everything as we enjoyed our free breakfast in the morning sun. The king size bed was so comfortable and the room and furnishings were obviously designer inspired. We did not venture very far, two short blocks to the beach, a stroll around the harbor, and dinner at a seafood restaurant. The staff were very helpful and friendly and the whole atmosphere was casual, calm and relaxed. Just what we needed!

Santa Barbara is a beautiful place to visit and the Eagle Inn was perfectly pleasant if not altogether outstanding. We were given a room on the ground floor leading straight off the Reception area and next to the Breakfast room and main staircase so it was a little noisy at times but the room itself was spotless. Very convenient for the sea front and not so convenient for the main shopping district I would certainly recommend The Eagle Inn for a short stay.

Many pluses and a few minuses

My sister and I stayed at the Eagle Inn for two nights. The location was ideal: close to the beach and to downtown. The rooms was comfortable and quiet. The bedding and toiletries were of above average quality. The referigerator and microwave in the room were a pleasant surprise. The continental breakfast was fair: plus for fresh fruit salad and bagels, minus for very substandard coffee. Unfortunately, our room overlooked the parking lot which I felt made the room a bit overpriced at $160+tax. The bathroom was a little cramped and the shower did not function properly. The people at the front desk were polite but not warm.

Well done, lovely environs, quirky, great deal!

The King deluxe with fireplace and jacuzzi was very nice. Some of the rooms, tho, looked small. Book big! The price is fabulous and so is the location. The neighborhood is quiet ---there is no pool, which was OK with me. It was close to everything and the room, while quirky, was huge and ultracomfortable with beautiful French doors and a nice tiny terrace. The jacuzzi is very luxurious. The mixture of Art Deco and tradaitional Ethan Allen and strange printes bedspreads that were of a lower quality was a little esthetically offputting but this hoel has a quirky charm that would make me want to stay here again..and a GREAT price!

The Eagle Inn was fabulous! We stayed in a room with a jacuzzi and a fireplace and it was wonderful, especially for the price.

I followed other reader reviews for our trip up the California coast last week, and this one is definitely accurate... can't say the same for the Magic Castle in LA...

We loved our stay at the Eagle Inn. The room was spotless and like an earlier reviewer said was the best room at the inn. At the front in the middle of the inn overlooking the street with a large balcony with patio chairs, table and sunloungers. Location was great as well. Would definetly stay here again.

We just returned today from our road trip up the coast and we stayed at 3 different hotels during our 4 night trip. The Eagle Inn is a great hotel that we will long remember and that we will likely revisit some day. It's located two long blocks from State Street and two shorter blocks from the ocean. The hotel must have been recently redecorated because it looks great - so clean, well-appointed, and nice. Our room was on the second floor towards the back of the building - so quiet! It had a fire place, jacuzzi, balcony, and king bed. Our room was not flashy or cheesy - just one of the nicest rooms we've ever stayed in.
If you want a unique and high quality experience in Santa Barbara, try the Eagle Inn.

Top Local Tips for Santa Barbara

Sightseeing Local sightseeing tourist trolley bus picks up and drops off outside the Eagle Inn on a regular schedule.

Restaurants Check out Emilios (very nice food, make a reservation), Arigato Sushi, East (Thai and Japanese, usualy no reservation), Enterprise Fish Co (Busy, good seafod, reservation) and for a breakfast place you can get into without a long wait -- at the end of Castillo street in the Marina, first building, don't recall the name, but WAY less of a line than Sambos (?).

No Car Required If you are there for a vacation leave your car in the parking lot and use the local shuttle buses. They seem to go everywhere you need to go around town. Alternatively you can pretty much walk everywhere, beach, shopping, museum, restaurants etc.
