The Pepper Tree is a great little hotel in beautiful Santa Barbara

from crimson999
The Pepper Tree is a fine little hotel. We had a sizeable room next to the large pool. Staff were extremely friendly. Handy little restaurant is available on-property.

The hotel is conveniently located on State Street but rooms are set back enough for peaceful stay.

Would definitely recommend this small BW in beautiful Santa Barbara

It's not the Ritz-Carlton, and you should be happy about that. It's better, and the best value for your money. Ask for the "wine country" package if you can't get a better deal. Includes a nice bottle of wine at check-in and a map of the surrounding wine country. Has a lot of amenities top hotels don't have. Perfectly air conditioned, great service, free parking, and free snacks and coffee in room. Masseuse available. In other words, it has everything you might need after a long time on the road. On-site restaurant (diner type, but it will do in a pinch). It's reasonably priced because it's not in the thick of the happening downtown, but if you value price and quality over location, this is the motel/hotel for you. By the way, downtown is a 5 minute drive down the freeway.

Free WiFi Wireless Internet

The Pepper Tree is quiet, welcoming and friendly with a better than average hotel restaurant. It is directly across the street from a medium size mall in a moderately upscale neighborhood with plenty of good restaurants and is only a few hundred feet from access to Highway 101 - very convenient.

Typical of why reactions to the Pepper Tree are so positive is the fact that WiFi wireless internet access from our room was a free service. The actual cost of providing service might be negligible but most hotels to choose to gouge guests for providing it. It's a pleasure to recommend the Pepper Tree.

Star Service!

This motel is first class in customer service and has the amenties of a pricier hotel. Nice pool, sauna and massage service (at additional cost.) We found everyone there to be very accomodating and friendly. The fresh fruit & cookies in the room was a nice touch- and the apples are wonderful! We had a pleasant stay, thanks to their GREAT staff.

Relaxing Atmosphere

It is one of the better Best Westerns .. very nice architecture and warm atmosphere. Nice locations with department stores across the street with several shopping hubs around the area, with plenty of restaurant. It is located in the border of a upper class residential district and commerical state street. It is a little far to downtown but very close to Mission Santa Barbara and Botanic Garden, as well as the beach by car. The couryard was nicely landscaped, with an outdoor pool ( though might be a bit windy if not summer ). Every room has a balcony, and there are patio funitures availabe around in the courtyard for relaxing outdoor, or eating when the weather is warm. The room we had was not very big, though comfortable. There is wall-to-wall mirror to open up the room, though some people may object to having a mirror next to the bed. The hotel personnel are very nice and courteous. I was happy with my stay there.

Great place to stay

After my second visit to the Pepper Tree (once in 1998, and again in 2003), I'm in the fortunate position of singing their praises again.
From the cordial welcome at reception, along with complimentary coffee, through to the calling card on our car windshield to say that it had been cleaned overnight for us with the hotel's compliments, to the homely & friendly welcome in the restuarant / coffee shop, they didn't put a foot wrong.

Rooms are clean and spacious, and well looked after by their housekeeping staff.

a few compliments, a few critiques

My husband and I just spent a week visting spots throughout southern california, and ended our trip with a two-night stay in Santa Barbara at the Best Western Pepper Tree Inn. We had booked a "quick getaway package" through AAA which included the two nights, a welcome bottle of wine, and breakfast for two both mornings. Overall, a good to very good rating for this place, with some reservations. On the bright side, check-in went smoothly, and our wine was waiting. The desk staff treated us courteously throughout our visit. The grounds do look quite lovely and well-maintained overall, particularly near the pool areas marked by trees, lawns, flowering vines, etc. Our room/patio overlooked this area, and we were pleased that the room was quiet in relation to nearby State Street. The room was very clean, and offers thoughtful touches such as cookies, fresh fruit, coffee/teas, hair dryers, irons, HBO, and a refrigerator (helpful!) Patios are nice. Food in the on-site restaurant is nothing special, but we were glad it was free on our package! On the negative side, the rooms themselves are small, in spite of the mirrored walls to "open them up." It felt cramped to us after prior inns/hotels we had just visited. The decor is clean but in real need of updating -- the flowered bedspreads and wallpaper looked tacky and old-fashioned. If being in walking distance of downtown State Street is important to you, it is too far, but a simple drive by car.
Our strongest two complaints -- the walls were thin, and with locked connecting doors to the next room, we felt we could hear every word of the admittedly loud French family next door. Mostly, the prices seemed much too high for what you're staying in here -- a nicely done motel with some hotel-like touches and amenities. "Resort" seems to be pushing it here, descriptively. That said, we heard nearly identical high prices quoted for ratty, scary motels down the street, so we figured it was what the market will bear. Overall, if in the area, we'd probably consider this place again.

Lived Up To Billing

Going in with high expectations, our stay was everything we hoped it to be. Beautiful pool area, large bathroom, refrigerator. Lots of little touches like fresh fruit and snacks in the room and a cleaned car windshield in the morning. Good stiff drinks from the bar and easy nearby shopping topped it off. Only gripe: with everything else top notch, why have plastic disposable water glasses in the rooms? A great stay.

fantastic hotel

from blueskies145
we stayed only one night at this hotel i like nice hotels, but this one was perfect. the pool was so wonderful. the room was so restful. i did no work there, but there was plenty of room to work. each room has it's own private balcony. the area of santa barbara is great because there is no congestion. nice restaurants nearby, shopping too. the hotel staff was great. they have good soft water. every amenity is in the room-even a clothes line in the shower for the bathing suits!!! i cannot wait to go back. this time we will even take the kids!

Excellent choice!

from kmr2r
Great hotel, great views. We were very pleased. The only change I would recommend is that the gym needs air-conditioning!

Top Local Tips for Santa Barbara

State & A There is a resturant/bar on the corner of State Street and Anapamu Street, called State & A. The food is great, the servers are friendly. I wouldn't recommend it for small children but for everyone else, don't pass it up.

Don't miss... ...La Super-Rica Taqueria for dinner and the Tupelo Junction Cafe for brunch. Both excellent!

Do pier and sea front Don't plan to spend long here.
