great location

We enjoyed our stay and would definitely return. Our room was #245 with just a peek of an ocean view thru the trees and roof tops. The staff was super friendly with many good recommendations for places to eat and things to do. The room was a bit small, but not at all uncomfortable. Having the mini-fridge & free bottled water was a treat. The mattress was firm, but not the block of wood as another reviewer suggested. We enjoyed the all day availability of some fresh fruit, coffee & tea, plus warm cookies in the late afternoon. The continental breakfast was basic, but fresh. We would have liked some yogurt, but that's just us. This was a great value for the location near the beach & a short walk to the action of State St.

Great Stay

We enjoyed a three day stay at this lovely, little hotel just over a block from the beach and centrally located to restaurants, public transportation, and public parks. We used our car only one of the three days given this pedestrian friendly location and easy access to the frequent and inexpensive (in one case: 25 cents) electric buses that run through the main downtown area and along the waterfront.

The room was small. but more than adequate; clean and well appointed, to include a small fridge and better than average toiletries (plus free bottled water !). The breakfast was a pleasant surprise and included fresh juice, fruit, assorted pastries/muffins/biscuits/toast/bagels/cereals and a selection of fresh brewed coffees, hot chocolate and teas.

The staff was friendly, courteous and very helpful in offering directions and dining recommendations. The hotel lobby is a homey setting of sofa, easy chairs, and a library of books and VCR films at no charge. The price was an incredible bargain given the fact that it was the most important weekend in Santa Barbara's year...the annual film festival whose "glitterati" this year included George Clooney.

We note some unfavorable earlier reviews, but none was replicated in our experience. We're glad we ignored them and, by the way, the hotel was full. We never heard a complaint.

The CIBTS in Santa Barbara did not meet our expections from the presentation on the web. Props to their Marketing group though, they did their job. We spent a fair portion of spare time in SB looking at better, less expensive places to stay for our next trip. What appeared to be a quaint 2-story house, was indeed an old 3-story motel renovated from re-runs of "Martha Stewart Living." Rooms needed maintenance and it was overpriced. Wish we found this review site before-hand. Caveat emptor.

We just spent 4 days/3nights at the Country Inn in Santa Barbara. It is a good location - just 1 & 1/2 short blocks from the beach. It is clean, quiet and the rooms are very pleasant. The continental breakfast is quite nice with sliced oranges, orange juice, other fruit, pastries and delicious hot biscuits, bagels, toast and cereal. The coffee is delicious. However, we will not return to this Inn because the bed was so unconfortable. The mattress was so hard it was impossible to sleep. I mean the mattress was HARD and good sleep was impossible. We were able to get an early start each day because we could not stay on the mattress any longer! Until the mattresses are changed I would not recommend this Inn to anyone that would like to have a good night's sleep. Of course, if you like sleeping on a board then check in!

Way overpriced

Rooms were noisy and very small. Views are of the parking lot (no matter where you stay in the hotel). We heard room phones ringing all night and people talking in the next room as if they were in our room. The bed was awful. The mattress sunk down in the middle and we were clinging to the sides all night. Pillows were unbelievably flat.

Staff was nice and the continental breakfast was okay. We paid $149 AFTER AAA discount. We will never stay in another Inn by the Sea again. What a rip-off.

Lovely place to stay!

This Inn was recommended to us for our stay 16/3/05 and we were not disapointed.
Nice rooms with most facilities including a free video library.
Super location.
Continental breakfast served in the lounge in addition to 24 hour fruit and tea or coffee/.
Nice outdoor pool.
Excellent value, especially if booked direct with the hotel.
Appeared very popular.

All the hotels in Santa Barbara are pricey, but the Country Inn by the Sea is worth it's comparatively moderate price because it's in such a great location and the rooms are clean and well kept. My boyfriend and I had a nice long weekend there in September and enjoyed the pool and the short walk to the beach. The morning we left, we enjoyed the complimentary breakfast on our patio, savoring the ocean breeze and the beautiful day.

Small rooms

We wanted a place close to the beach and state street. Its about about 3 blocks from both, which is ok.

Our room was small. Basically the bed, tv, and 2 chairs filled the room. Our vcr didnt work, but the desk clerk brought up a new one for us to use. Room decor is definitely country.

Breakfast was pretty basic -- danishes, cereal, juice, and coffee.

It was ok, but we shortened our stay.

This hotel is too expensive for what you get. We paid about $140.00 per night for small, noisy room with a king size bed.
The room was fairly clean, but the traffic noise was pretty bad. My wife and I had to buy earplugs to get to sleep. We looked around the hotel to see if getting another room would have been an option, but they all were exposed to the surrounding streets.
However, the staff was great. They were really friendly and anxious to please. We just felt like it was a rip off to charge as much as they did for what we got.

A great start to a memorable vacation.....

Began our 28 day "out west" vacation in Santa Barbara and thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Inn. The king sized bed was very comfortable and we appreciated the breakfast as well as the mid afternoon cookies. We took advantage of the pool, jacuzzi and sauna and had them to ourselves. The staff was very helpful and we plan to visit again soon!

Top Local Tips for Santa Barbara

Don't miss: Do not miss the Court House. There are beautiful hisoric murals and the building itself. Also from the top of the tower there is a panoramic view of the city. Mission Santa Barbara is also fantastic.

State Street Trolley If you visit Santa Barbara and don't have a car, try the trolley that runs up and down State Street. It will take you to the wharf and almost (or all the way) to the Mission. It's a great value and State Street is the place to shop, eat, or just see the sites.

The Zoo was a lot of fun! We really enjoyed the Zoo. It isn't too big. Beautiful grounds. Really close to all the animals. Took the waterfront trolley for $1.00 for the whole family. Admission is reasonable. A great way to spend a few hours and enjoy the weather and sights.
