Beautiful ocean view

Stayed at the BW while visiting Hearst Castle in May 2004. Very nice place on a gorgous bluff along the seashore. It's located only a mile or two from the castle with a group of around 5-6 other hotels. The BW is the best one in the group and thus the most expensive ( I think well worth it). The heated pools and spa are very nice and the shore line bonfires at night are a great way to meet people from around the world. The room was large and clean and the on site restaurant served a very good breakfast.

Great place to stay

We had a great stay at the Cavalier. The room was large and extremely clean. We did not stay at one of the renovated beach front rooms which I hear are great. Although our room was not renovated it was very nice. I dont think that I have ever seen a cleaner bathroom. The grout in the tile was still bright white. I would still recommend this hotel even if you can not afford to spring for a renovated room.

The only downside of this hotel was the lack of breakfast. Breakfast is not included with your room. Of course it is available to purchase at the cavalier restaurant. The food there was very good for both breakfast and lunch.

Of course this hotel is close to the Hearst Castle, but it is also close to the Paso wine valley. If you like wine it is a nice afternoon tour over the mountains to many wineries and their tasting room.

Positives outweigh the minor negatives

I had stopped in San Simeon to visit Hearst Castle and planned to spend the night in Big Sur. However, I learned of a rock slide that would prevent me from continuing up the coast. I immediately checked into the Cavalier. The front desk staff were very friendly and I took a room for $79. More expensive options were available with "ocean views". The room I stayed in was directly over the lobby (Rm 209 I think) and it also had a view of the ocean. It was also next to the service road but I heard no noise at all and was able to get a good night's sleep. The best feature of this hotel is the location to the water and the firepits they light nightly. Travelling alone it was nice to stay in a location that felt safe and were I was able to socialize with other guests over the fire. The one downside to this motel is the restaurant.
The dinner was terrible - be sure to try another restaurant in the area. Having said that, I did order breakfast by room service there because I was in a rush - the prices are identical to eating in the restaurant which is a nice change from most hotels. The room was clean, the sheets were a little worn but not bad, the bathroom was stocked with a hair dryer, shampoo, conditioner, lotion, soap, mending kit, q-tips and cotton balls. All of the staff were friendly, including those in the restaurant - this is a good place to stay if you're in the area - very close to the castle and where elephant seals mate (in February anyway). The motel also has 2 pools - you'll want to bring a robe if you're visiting in winter - it gets very chilly there. If you're expecting luxury accomodations you will be disappointed - if you're looking for good value with some good perks and friendly staff you'll be very happy. (The newer, more expensive rooms, may be more luxurious if that's important to you.)

Pleasantly surprised!

If you are traveling to San Simeon, this is the place to stay. We were very surprised by the size of the room (King bed). The room was exceptionally clean. We could still see the vacuum path on the carpet!

We headed to San Simeon for a weekend during our vacation to San Francisco. I must honestly tell you that the meals we had at the hotel's restaurant were not only the cheapest on our entire trip, but in my opinion the food was the best we had during our stay!

Approximately 100 feet behind the hotel is the ocean. At sunset, fires are made in the outside pits. A nice place to warm up at night. If we ever return again to San Simeon, we wouldn't dream of staying anywhere else!

This is a really nice place to stay for this area. There is not much around here, be warned -- but it's a nice midway point between LA and SF. Not far from the Heart Castle. Typical Best Western rooms. Clean.
Comfortable. Nice Fireplaces. Gorgeous oceanfront. One of the nicest sunsets I've ever seen. Would stay there again.

Making it an annual destination

The Cavalier was a wonderful surprise for us. Found a Package on the internet including Tickets to Hearst Castle, Oceanfront rooms with wood-burning fireplace, Champagne and $50 Food Credit. Having just left Monterey Plaza Hotel (For a lot more money), The Cavalier was every bit as enjoyable. Huge Bathtub and amazing views from balcony right over the ocean. Reservation person recommended bringing bathing suits and the heated pool and jaccuzi were amazing. Think 45 degree rainy weather and soaking in jaccuzi as the cold rain falls! Staff was very helpful and friendly. If you are visiting Hearst Castle, definitely book a package with them, way more convienent than booking yourself in advance! Also, cheapest mini-bar prices ever! ($2.75 for wine/champagne $1.50 water!) Anyways, will definitely make this a stop on annual mainland trip. Oh! Don't forget the huge in-room safe. It fit my laptop, Video Camera, and wife's big purse!

Loved the Ocean Front Room With Fire Place, Excellent Hotel.

The Hotel is in a perfect setting. The room we had was next to the ocean, with a fire place, & King size bed and excellent bathroom facilities. Even though my fiance and I were sick with the flu, we enjoyed the room and service given by the staff. I would recommend this hotel to anyone. I would give this hotel a five star rating, because of the location and ocean view and overall accommodations. Thank You, for a pleasant two days. Tim Slee.

What a bargain!

Great spot right on the ocean and just a short ride to Hearst Castle.
Our room rate was so moderate that we weren't sure what to expect. What we found was a clean, basic accommodation that was certainly adequate for our stay. The thick, thirsty towels were a plus, and there were plenty of them. Didn't have to ask for extras as we usually do in most hotels. It's not a 4-star hotel, but we weren't paying 4-star prices either. The staff was friendly and helpful, and one staff member, in particular, gave us quite a bit of information on the elephant seals that haul out of the water nearby. We loved the idea of the bonfires.
We were there on November 4, 2003, and it was great to go out and sit near the fire on the crisp fall night. Breakfast in the hotel restaurant was also very good. We'd definitely return to this hotel, and we wouldn't hesitate to recommend it. Apparently, they're in the process of updating all their rooms, so get them at these prices while you can!

This motel was perfectly located for trips to Hearst Castle. It was very clean and the staff both helpful and courteous. Certainly a pleasure after some of the places we have stayed. But for the money, it wasn't as nice as it should have been. Their writeup said the rooms had been renovated but we found ancient dark brown linoleum in the bathroom and pillows that smelled and immediately collapsed although the linens were clean. The patio doors were not insulated around all the edges so it was drafty no matter what one did. The amenities were very nice, big bathrobes and binoculars too. But the furniture was old, shabby & scratched. Fortunately we had excellent weather with only one afternoon that was windy & cold. We went out to the "bonfires" on the beach and found they were like the old time incinerators we used to have in our backyards but with open sides facing away from the ocean. They were great for s'mores and to have good conversations. We tried the motel's restaurant but arrived when they were changing shift so my husbands fish and chips were too greasy probably because the fryer hadn't been up to the correct temperature. My rueben sandwich was alright although the pastrami was slightly sour. I ordered the red cabbage salad and wouldn't recommend it to anyone unless you just love plain cabbage! My mistake -- thought it would be more like coleslaw. The staff was distracted and busy with their own conversations -- really cared less if we were there or not. We won't go back.

Since 1985, my wife and I must of stayed there-at least-20 times. We just love it there-scenery, they allow pets, and a very friendly staff.

Top Local Tips for San Simeon

San Simeon Dining, Nonexistent! For food, you will want to go to Cambria. We were going to have lunch at Hearst Castle, but they are currently doing renovations and there is no restaurant!!! Instead, there are overpriced cafe items sold out of stands, so call beforehand! The Best Western restaurant was only so-so, and lackluster especially for price, so look for food in Cambria. You can't go wrong there. Everyone in San Simeon/Cambria was so friendly, we definitely will be back!

Touring San Simeon We went on both the intro tour (#1) and the bedroom/kitchen tour (#2). I agree that the first is necessary to get the layout of the property. The second tour was much smaller and the guide could give much more information. Since both tours began and ended in the pool area, I thought that they would have a lot of overlap in info, but that was not the case.

Great place to stay when visiting Hearst Castle About 2 or so miles away from Hearst Castle, very quiet, and right on the beach. Also only a mile or so away from Piedras Blancas (sea lion watching)
