Fun, Campy, and Enjoyably Tacky

from A TripAdvisor Member
This pink palace, no, it's not named after the singer. It was here long before she was even born! The place is wildly whimsical and has doorways carved out of tree stumps and a host of off the wall, yes very tacky but fun stuff throughout the place. Stayed in the cave room which has a faucet that pours out of a tree, it's pretty hard to duplicate. Was a nice place to stay if for nothing else but the whimsical aspect, don't know if I'd stay here again. Has a distinctly 1950s kitschy feel.

Good Time

We stayed at the Madonna Inn on April 20th and had a great time. The hotel is over the top as far as decorating is concerned. We loved it. We had 2 rooms the Safari room and the Crystal room. Both were very big and very clean. The Crystal room smelled a little musty at first, but we opened the window for a little while and it was fine. The beds were comfortable and the rock waterfall shower was fun. There were 3 adults and 3 children (14, 12, 8) and we all enjoyed the hotel. Keep an opened mind and have fun.

My husband wanted to have a relaxing weekend in a unique place. We wanted to go wine-tasting-shopping and relax. First surprise when we opened the door: smell  moldy and obviously smoking allowed room, even though there was a non-smoking room sign. Personally went to registration clerks and complained. Their answer?  Really? We ll send the housekeepers  Do you think we saw any? Nope. I wanted to get out of there and go to the decent hotel to stay. Sorry, can t leave  you can pay $200 per night and leave now  it s your choice. Also I needed to rent the vehicle. Asked clerks how to get to the airport (where you can actually rent the car on weekend). Their answer? They gave me a yellow book to find a taxi. So, I called taxi in front of them and took it. I was so upset and exhausted that I ended up in the local hospital  with IV and oxygen mask  just blacked out right in the airport on the way to the Avis counter. After my horrified husband brought me back to that hotel from the hospital, imagine my surprise when I learned that the hotel offers free shuttle to and back from the airport!Night: pillows are the worst. Bed bugs are terrible and hungry for blood. Our room was below the wooden deck and there was no sleep possible with women walking in high heels, with the luggage rolling as if they were moving heavy furniture  people were checking in to their rooms. We managed to catch some sleep between 4 and 5 am. Then people started to check out and moving again. My neck was stiff from the wooden pillows, we were both itching and scratching from multiple bites of the friendly bed bugs. We were tired and ready to forget about the whole wine-tasting idea and just to go back home  5 hours drive. When checking out, expressed our concern about bugs and noise and smell and shuttle to the clerks, their response?  Ou, sorry, you should of told us Now, how would you like to pay $200 for a stay? Well, that was my first and last stay in any junky hotel ever unless I am desperate. If you want to pay that amount of money to be bitten and tortured  hey, everyone has preferences. I ll just make sure to recommend this hotel to my enemies . Will start calling them, after I scratch away these red bumps on my legs and arms, ouch, there is a big one on my neck. Hmm, wondering, is it safe to bring my bags from the garage yet?

Tacky Chic

I thought it was the most clever spot I stayed in. No two rooms look the same, and the restaurant was good.

Nice, but overpriced.

I took my wife there for valetines day and we stayed in the Old Fashion Honeymoon room. Prior to arriving I had champagne, and chocolates placed in the room along with a card that I had sent to them ahead of time. The room was above average in size and the bed was very comfortable for a hotel room. The room did have a light that hung very low over the bed. The room had minor signs of wear and tear. We ate dinner in the steakhouse which you would be best to have reservations for. The dinner was well above average with large portions. The drinks were a little costly, especially the margaritas which were expensive for the small sized glass. The steakhouse is decorated very pink, but is good for a romantic dinner. They had a live band playing during dinner. We had breakfast in the cafe the next morning. The staff was very attentive during both meals. Overall we both enjoyed the stay, although we felt that the room was overpriced. The meals were overpriced, but not as much as the room.

A Part of My Past

I was born and raised in SLO and moved away about 30 years ago,but when I go home I enjoy dinner at the Inn. The staff are wonderful, and yes the decor is a little tacky by todays standards but what a great look into the 50's. The rooms are large, clean and and fun for the children as well as adults. We all need a look at the past to enjoy the future.
Thank you Mr&Mrs Madonna for a continued look at yesterday.

On Safari!

We spent a very enjoyable night in September 2003 at the Madonna Inn.
The Safari Room comes highly recommended - the beds were HUGE and attention to detail incredible. The staff were lovely and both dinner and breakfast were delicious. It was our second visit and well worth it.

Palace of Bad Taste!

If you like to feel like you are on LSD, stay in this pink nightmare.
The owners must be more than a little insane. Only for those who really like "camp". Without a doubt the tackiest place on the planet.
Guaranteed to give you a headache.

Just Plain Tragic

The camp factor palls shortly after arrival. This place is just sad.
All the joy of slumming, but without the great deal.

Another Hotel, Another Palnet

What an experience. If you have any fun left in you, stay here. We found The Madonna Inn from England via a website and couldn't resist booking. We thought it would be really tacky but just had to go. It wasn't tacky but it was certainly bright. We stayed in The Old Mill room with a working waterwheel which, thankfully, could be switched off. The wardrobe was a sentry box and the bathroom was GOLD! The staff seemed to enjoy themselves as much as the guests and diners and served an enormous breakfast of waffles and pancakes. The men's bathroom is a cave with a waterfall flush that has to be seen to be believed and is a tourist attraction for all. The dining room is PINK! and I mean PINK!
Sometimes you stay at an hotel and enjoy it but you will never forget The Madonna Inn. It's not cheap but you are only young once. Treat yourself!

Top Local Tips for San Luis Obispo

Restaurant at Madonna Inn I felt it was overrated. It was good food, but not for that price. I recommend ordering the potato soup and get the free bread. It was great and came with the meal, but if I had it to do over again, I'd just order a big bowl of the soup - it was delicious!! I'd skip the entree.

Don't miss the Apple Farm If you stay more than one night, I recommend going the Apple Farm restaurant for breakfast. They have a huge variety, have a great bakery, and have great shopping on site. They also have a working mill that they girls loved seeing.

Historical Museum Pay a quick visit to the SLO Historical Museum- there's always a friendly staff person working willing to give you interesting factoids.
