We had visited one other JVD hotel, and were just as smitten with Hotel Montgomery as we were with the Moorpark Hotel. This hotel offers character, service and much style. The rooms are fairly small, but tasteful decorations eases that minor issue. We didn't eat here, but it looked like a very popular spot for all ages, although mostly 20s-30s. Theres a great outdoor area with nice furnishings, too. You have to pay for parking, but what downtown area gives that up for free? However, the price is too good to be true, so what's a few extra bucks to park the car. It's worth it. Enjoy.

Upscale Campy!

The mid-century modern feel of the hotel was definitely campy and interesting.

The fitness center is a bit utilitarian with just hand weights, an eliptical machine and treadmill. However it was well stocked with towels, water and headphones for the flat screen tvs.

Things I liked... bathrobes in the room. Aveda products, cotton swabs and cotton balls in the bathroom. Egyptian cotton sheets on very comfortable beds. Free internet access. The staff was all extremely professional and warm. Radio / CD player on the desk. Mini-bar. Plus the location is great if you need to stay in the heart of the city. It's walking distance to parks, museums, restaurants, and office buildings.

Things I didn't like... the powdery airfreshener smell in the room was a bit cloying (however I'm allergic to chemicals so my sense of smell is hyperactive).

I would stay there again.

I booked a room off of Priceline at the Montgomery and it was a horrible experience!!! They were not very friendly after seeing I was a Priceline customer and they told me I would have to pay an etra $30 if I wanted 2 beds instead of 1 big one. I had called ahead on that and they said I could have a room with 2 beds if it was available....nothing was said about having to pay extra and I called twice to confirm my reservation. So, when I got there I was stuck! I had my teenage son with me and he wasn't about to share a bed with his mother!:) So I got a good deal on Priceline (and I see they are on other discount sites as well...), but then had to "add" another $30 to my bill when I got there so buyer beware....It seems like a bait and switch kind of thing to me!! The rooms are very nice and trendy and there is a nice restaurant on site, but if you are looking for a deal this is the wrong place to go to! K

Unfortunately I disagree with this guest on "Buyer Beware". We only make available rooms with one bed as our rooms with 2 beds are limited to 3 in the entire hotel. Therefore the 3 rooms with beds are sold in the superior category and are not available when reserving a room third party distributor; had they been, it would have cost this guest $30 more than they paid to that site for the one bed.

I feel bad that this traveler feels we “bait and switched” them and had we done a better job of explaining the circumstances when the guest called we could have avoided the ill feelings. I will be working with the team to show how important it is to help manage expectations at all times.

Great Modern Style

We really liked this hotel. Great modern style. Good staff. But San Jose is kind of dull--not much going on.

Travelled to San Jose for Business and stayed here for one nite. Amazing beds, amazing service, and very private. Clean rooms, although a bit small- it didn't matter. Would stay again in a heartbeat. Its definitely a boutique hotel, with class and superb customer service.

Very nice hotel

Stayed there in a mini-suite as part of the Lover's Suite package. Hotel was very nice, room was nicely furnished, clean and quiet. Staff was friendly. Did pay for valet parking, $14 a night I think it was. Restuarant was outstanding! Would definitely recommend staying at the Montgomery. Be advised that they do not have a swimming pool so if you needa pool stay somewhere else.

They overcharged me $30 to be able to get 2 beds once I got there!

I reserved a room at The Montgomery for 7/19/05 through Priceline and then called the hotel to ask for 2 beds. They said they could not guarantee it....It depended on their occupancy. They said they would put a "note" with my reservation saying that I would prefer 2 beds. There was NO mention that this would cost me ANY extra. (And I confirmed twice on the phone.) When my son and I arrived they were extremely "snooty" and told me I would have to pay an extra $30 to get 2 double beds instead of 1 queen. I have NEEVER had ANY hotel (whether done through Priceline or AAA) charge me more for 2 beds instead of 1 larger one. It was ridiculous!!! I was "stuck" as I was travelling with me 16-year-old son and we definitely needed 2 beds!!! It was a RIP OFF!! However, the room was very nice once we got settled....Definitely looks like a 4-star type room, but services were limited....Or maybe they just didn't want to "inform" me of their services with the "attitude" I was getting!! I will NEVER go there again!!

Cool and convenient

Stayed here one night before an early morning flight back to the East Coast. Decor is hip and comfortable. Bed was luxurious as was the bathroom. We didn't have a chance to eat at the hotel restaurant but it looked pretty swanky. Being in the heart of San Jose, there were quite a few options in terms of restaurants, shops, and clubs. The light rail stops right in front of the hotel which makes it convenient to get around without fighting the infamous Silicon Valley traffic.

We took our chances and booked through Hotwire. Paid $149 for a Sunday night. All in all, I would stay here again.

Loved the fact that they had a Mac and a PC in their business center - no charge for either. They also had free internet service in the rooms.

A Hip Hotel for Grownups

I just stayed overnight at the Hotel Montgomery in Downtown San Jose. It was lovely in every major respect--very prettily decorated in a "hip" style which was not over the top, quiet and dark when needed in the room, comfortable. They did a good job of modernizing the building while still retaining some sense of historical character.

I stayed in a king deluxe, the cheapest room type, which was a bit small--though it did have a writing desk. One can't expect an upgrade, but I thought they might do it since the hotel wasn't very full. The restaurant/bar (Paragon) was pleasant, but not crazily noisy or overrun with teenagers, as it was at the Hotel Valencia (which was straining much harder for coolness).

The Downtown San Jose location is good--I was two blocks from the play I saw at the San Jose Repertory Theatre. It's an easy walk to several museums, a bunch of restaurants etc. I found staff attitudes to be fine--not obsequious, but perfectly friendly. The breakfast was pretty minimal, as is so often the case. One equipment problem--there was a fine sounding radio in the room, complete with a remote control, but it was weak in pulling in stations (e.g. from San Francisco).

I'd rank the Montgomery with De Anza and the Marriott as good places to stay in Downtown San Jose.

Terrible Service

I talked to the booking manager in March regarding reserving a block for my wedding guests. I even recommended the Hotel in my invitations. Lo and be hold, the negotiate rate I thought I had was not in the system. Several guests complained after trying to book there. After 3 phone voicemails to the reservation manager went unanswered, I am quite frustrated because I was originally going to select them for my honeymoon night. After being quite hopeful and understanding, I am forced to conclude this place may not be worth the hype.

I regret that this reviewer feels this way. It is certainly not our intention to inconveninece our guests. We have tried, since locating this complaint, to locate the group block mentioned in the review. However we have been unsuccessful. Our standard is that all group blocks are to have an agreement. We have no unsigned agreements or signed agreements that match the review

In sum, I understand that we fell well short of expecatations and sincerely apologize for the frustration we have caused this guest. I only regret that I was not allowed the opportunity to try and make this right. I can only hope that the author of this review will read my response and contact me directly so that we can try to recover from not meeting expectations.

Great Stay at the Hotel Montgomery!!

We had a great stay at the Hotel Montgomery. The hotel has a prime location, within short walking distance of great restaurants and shopping. It is also right on the light rail and bus stop, which made it convenient for getting around. We were in town for the U2 concert at the HP Pavilion, and we walked to the show in about 20 minutes and felt very safe doing so.

The hotel is decorated in contemporary style, and has a cool vibe to it. The room is a little on the small side, but we didn’t feel too cramped. The bed was very comfortable. The amenities in the room are wonderful, from the robes to the toiletries. The hotel staff was extremely friendly and helpful.

We would definitely stay at the Hotel Montgomery again.

Just as an FYI, the cab ride from the airport to the hotel takes about 10 minutes and costs about $20 each way. Next time, we would either consider renting a car or taking the light rail from the airport.

Top Local Tips for San Jose

Don't get here on holidays It's purely a place to stay for business. There's some nightlife etc but generally at night it's deserted.

Parking after 6 is free in downtown lots... ...so consider using one rather than the hotel valet.

Great shopping nearby Downtown San Jose does not have a lot of shopping but there is great shopping nearby. Go to Santana Row which has high-end and upscale stores. Santana Row is an open-air mixed use commercial lot with retail and restaurants. It has great restaurants like California Cafe, Blowfish Sushi, Left Bank...and some others that are more budget-minded for the whole family like Chili's and Pasta Pomodoro. There always seems to be lots of people milling around. Directly across the street is Valley Fair Mall. You can actually just walk there from Santana Row. It's got Nordstrom's, Macy's, and some nice stores, like Banana Republic, Guess, Talbot's, Ann Taylor,etc.
