Super hotel and excellent restaurants just outside the front door

I've stayed at Washington Square Inn 13 or 14 times, beginning in 1993. I shall be there again the first week of October. Usually I just opt for Room 3 or 4 because they're the cheapest ones with bathrooms, and all I need is a place to sleep and hang my clothes. Not only is the hotel (acrtually a high-end B and B) just great, but two of San Francisco's better eating establishments are adjacent: Moose's (for dinner) and Mama's (for brunch -- and be prepared to stand in line). There's also very good old-style Italian food in pleasant surroundings (and not floating in tomato sauce and blanketed with cheese) on the same side of Stockton Street a block or two "down". You can walk down a few blocks and be in Chinatown. Walk a few blocks through Chinatown and you're at Union Square. A tai chi class meets in the park every morning during your breakfast, so you can watch while others exercise. This hotel is quite social, since breakfast is served around one big table in the front window; wine and snacks are served in the reception room every evening. I have been all over the City in some outstanding hotels, but always return to Washington Square Inn.

Beautiful hotel, perfect location

Absolutely loved this hotel. Elegant and clean, wonderful staff, delicious simple breakfast, and perfect location. The rooms are quite pricey, so we stayed in a less expensive room with the bathroom down the hall. The bathroom was very nice and clean, however, it might be worth it to pay extra and get a larger room with the bathroom ensuite. We saw one of the nicer rooms and they are gorgeous. Very comfortable and informal atmosphere in a very classy setting. Highly recommended. Street noise in the AM.

Jul 16-18 was a crazy week in SF and washington square inn was the only place i could find with availability. I'm so glad I ended up staying here!

Firstly, it is the cutest neighborhood ever! Lots of great eats round the corner... Ideale's for seafood risotto and The House for their unagi sandwich. :) And some of the cutest stores too... Annabella's, Ooma's, Ethan's,...

The property itself was extremely cute and I felt like I was in Europe. Staff was extremely attentive to detail and I loved the european decor. I stayed in room #4 which was tiny by american standards but still very cute. The street noise wasnt bad at all. The 2nd night I moved to their room#7 for the suite and this suite is gorgeous! There's a little sitting area that looks right out into washington square with the magnificent church as the backdrop. I had breakfast there this morning and wow, what an experience. BUT, if like sleeping-in and are a light sleeper, this may not be a place for you. Street noise was definitely louder at room #7 and I woke up to the sound of garbage trucks. Not a problem for me since i"m an early riser.

Breakfast was basic... european so dont expect eggs and sausage. Still, I felt it was fresh and delicious.

I'm not sure I would stay here on my own budget since it was pricey but would definitely stay there for a work trip again. Location is perfect - 20 mins walk to union square or hop on the #45 bus.

My husband & I stayed 2 nights at the Washington Square Inn in April. It had an elegance about it from the moment we entered the lobby. Our room was decorated in a lovely old world style although it was very small. We did know it would be small but thought it would be OK as only sleeping there. We should have paid a little more for a larger room. The rooms were very clean.
Breakfast is served in the lobby at a very large dining table overlooking the Washington Square. Can't complain about the variety and service it was fabulous. Great to watch the chinese do their tai chi here each morning. Coffee & biscuits are available in the lobby all day and the wine & cheese in the late afternoon was excellent. A great chance to chat to fellow travellers from around the world. The wines were excellent.
The Inn is a great location from Fishermans Wharf and many great restaurants within easy walk. To sum it up this was an excellent choice having the park opposite is a great haven from the hustle & bustle of San Francisco. Could not have asked for more friendly & helpful hotel staff. Be sure to experience "Mamas" Restaurant opposite for great food & service. People line up here from early morning for their famous breakfasts. We loved San Francisco and Washington Square Inn!

The Inn's atmosphere is elegant yet you immediately feel at home. The rooms are beautifully decorated with antiques. We stayed in room 1 which is handicapped accessible. Even though it has old world charm, the Inn has hi-tech ammenities like wide screen TV and wireless internet access. However, this is not a place for kids!

The staff is courteous and professional but not obtrusive. The food is excellent and the afternoon wine & cheese is presented with artistic care. Guests can gather in the lobby and enjoy quiet conversation or can get lost in a good book.

Pier 39 and the Wharf attractions are a short walk to the north and the Coit Tower is just above the Inn atop Telegraph Hill. Two of the best San Francisco resataurants are within a block of the Inn (North Beach Restaurant and the Washington Square Bar & Grill). It is facinating watching local residents gather in the Square for morning Tai Chi exercises.

We look forward to our next trip to San Francisco so we can again delight in the experience that is the Washington Square Inn.

We highly recommend the Inn to those looking for something different than the typical sterile hotel! We loved it!

Great Hotel

Recently stayed 4 nights at this excellent hotel. Its in a very good position opposite a park and 10 mins from Fishermans Wharf on foot. Our room, no. 3, was smaller than some US bedrooms but certainly large enough. It was very well furnished, very clean with a comfortable bed and there was no noise at night from the street or other rooms. The breakfast was excellent with cereals, fresh fruit, yoghurt and pastries/bagels with the choice changing daily. The staff were helpful with advice and with booking our airport shuttle which they checked a few hours before we left without prompting from us. Full marks! There are restaurants a few yards away and we recommend the Cafe Divine. The reception area/lounge is european (french?) in style and comfortable. We have no hesitation in recommending this hotel.

Great weekend in San Francisco

My wife and I had a very enjoyable weekend at the Washington Square inn. We travelled down on Friday night and went up to Columbus for a very nice dinner at Volare. Saturday was a lazy day with a morning coffee at Cafe Pacini, lunch in Chaintown and a late dinner after the Symphony. The Symphony was the reason for the trip and it was wonderful - as usual. Great venue, wonderful sound and a great symphony. Sunday was Easter so church is only 100 steps away on the Square - a beautiful Catholic Church. We took it easy until 2 PM and had our last meal up at Stockton and Columbus at Delucchini.

The staff at the Inn did a great job catering to our needs. We got in after the wine and food was over but we snagged a quick plate and two glasses of wine. Saturday afternoon wine and cheese was very relaxing with alot of great people visiting about their weekend. The breakfasts are always good with fresh fruit and bagels wotj lox and cream cheese that we look forward to weeks in advance. We stayed in #2 which faces the central courtyard but is quiet and has good ventilation. We had a minor problem with the hair dryer which was fixed within the hour. Everything was great.

A great weekend with beautiful weather, great food and a wonderful place to stay.

Beautiful inn

Beautiful inn, right in the heart of the Italian neighborhood in San Francisco. We couldn't have asked for a more convenient spot. The price was a little hight, but we were able to WALK everywhere from this location. It was safe and clean and the room itself was beautiful, as well as the lobby and other areas of the inn. We felt very comfortable and at home. We will be back.

Excellent value and atmosphere

We stayed at the Washington Square Inn for 8 days in Feb 2007.The staff were more than helpful recommending good restaurants and places to visit. We stayed in the smallest room in the hotel, but it was clean and the decor was first class with en suite. The breakfast was well worth getting up for either in your room or downstairs and nibbles and wine on the house every evening. We were a 10 minute walk from Pier 39 and minutes from China town. We would recommend this hotel to anyone.

The BEST Hotel experience in The City!

My husband and I chose the Washington Square Inn to celebrate our wedding anniversary based on the reviews on Trip Advisor--and we couldn't have been more satisfied! The location on Washington Square in North Beach is quiet, safe, picturesque, and close to everything in The City thanks to walkable neighborhoods and a great bus system (take advantage of the MUNI multiple-day passes). The rooms are tastefully decorated, immaculately clean and if you're willing to splurge a bit, the junior suite is worth every penny for its views and size. Despite the rave reviews on breakfast, we actually passed it up because of the incredible breakfast across the street at Mama's On Washington Square (a word to the wise, though, get there early or you'll be standing in line for a long time). However, we took advantage of the wine & cheese hour in the evenings, after which you could walk up Filbert Street and watch the sun set over the Golden Gate Bridge from the top of Coit Tower. Our only warning: sometimes the garbage trucks come by early, but it's literally 5 minutes out of your morning, just roll over and go back to sleep in that comfy bed. You can't go wrong with this hotel; it's a class act from top to bottom.

North Beach neiborhood Wonderful area of town with beautiful sceanry, restaurants and shopping in the neighborhood are worth checking out!!!

Alcatraz - Day or Night We did the day tour, but I inquired about the differences between the tours. Since the night tour is only one group, the Alcatraz hospital is open for 1/2 hour during the tour and also, the cell doors are operated for you. There's actually one more thing but I can't remember what it is. The day tour was great, but if we return I'd probably go for the night tour. If I had it to do all over again, I'd choose the night tour (mostly because the hospital fascinated me).

Be ready for chilly weather San Francisco is very rarely warm. Be ready for chilly wind and fog. Dress in layers!
