OK location, but.......

Location was OK, but...... extra charge for parking of $15/day was not disclosed, and in lot parking was not available. Needed help to find another parking lot. The reservation was incorrect as well; I had asked for two beds and one one was available. Room was very small, not very clean, and the air conditioner did not work. They did take pets, and were a bit helpful in finding local restaurants. By the time I added on extra parking fees, and pet fees I was up to $135.00 per night. Could have stayed elsewhere for about the same money and a much better atmosphere. Best thing was the Presidio grounds close by for walking the dog.
Great place and location

It was so lovely that it was hard to leave to our next location.
Each morning they have a little continental breakfast with coffee, tea and some cookies and cakes.
The hotel is located on lombard street - Great location.
There is a good place to eat near the hotel (2 min) which is also not expensive and clean.
If we will come back to san francisco someday, we probably stay there again.

Great location

This hotel is well located for fisherman's wharf which is within easy walking distance.
The room was a good size for San Francisco, having a seperate bedroom.
Cleanliness wasn't the best and the decor was a bit tired,
Reception staff very helpful.

Great location, room not so great!

The Travelodge by the bay has an awesome location at Lombard and Van Ness. It is a block away from Muni bus stops that can take you to the wharves, Union Square and Chinatown.
Our room was large and clean. The bed was uncomfortable, but not terribly so. My major complaint was the bathroom shower. To accomodate a window the shower head was placed under the window at a very low height. The water came out at an unnaturally low level causing a person to squat down to have the water hit where it should.
The lobby is non-existant, there is just room for the front desk. Parking is very tight resulting in a lot of jockeying to get in and out.
The staff was friendly and helpful.
If you get a different room you may be satisfied with this motel.

Happy at Travelodge by the Bay

We stayed at Travelodge by the Bay in San Francisco for two nights as part of a budget 3 week trip around California.
We found the place to be great. Great rooms, clean and good size all for a good price (esp compared to other hotels in the same area!).
Good location and walking distance to Fisherman's Wharf and the of course the crookedest street in the world. Staff were helpful and friendly. Parking available at all times but cost extra.
The only negative thing I can think of is that the breakfast was served in the tiny reception area so reception was always packed in the mornings with people trying to check out and also people collecting their danish and coffee.
We would definately stay here again if we go back to San Francisco.

Great Location

I stayed at the Travelodge by the Bay for 7 nights, I found the hotel represented very good value for the money I paid. The location of the Hotel is great, the Marina is a very cool place to be, totally safe and very friendly, transport, ie cable car and busses are 5 minutes away, 10 minutes to Fishermans Whart (if that is your thing). Lombard Union and Chestnut have great restaraunts, shops etc and if you require groceries there is a Safeway about 10 minutes walk away. Finally the staff are extremely friendly and helpful, I have no hesitation in recommending this hotel.

A bargain rate in an expensive city and you get what you pay for. A bit run down and scuzzy. But in a great location with on-site parking. If you don't mind the lack of luxury it's okay. But if you want a nice SF experience there are nicer places.
Good location, poor room

I had stayed at this hotel a long time ago, in 1998, when I first visited San Francisco. At that time, it seemed good, despite the noise and the smell from the restaurant below our window. This time, I decided to stay here again because it was affordable, and I would be alone, so I preferred to stay in a well known neighborhood... But I was so disappointed! I stayed again at the same block that has the entrance by the garage. The room was very old and not very clean... In the second night, I had to change to another room, because I found an enourmous bug in the bed, killed it and spread bug's blood all over the sheets... Yaks! And then, when I was drying my hair, the outlet almost burned down! At least, the service was kind and attentious... One guy helped me to solve a problem with my car rental, the other helped me to change rooms and fixed the hair dryer... But the facility needs a lot of improvement...
Would recommend this (if you get the right sort of price)

I booked this hotel online and therefore wasn't really sure of how the price of $89 (plus tax) per night compared with other hotels in SF (I'm not a local). Having stayed there, I'd probably rate it about a 2 and a half star - there aren't any frills but it's a good place to stay. So if you get the right price, I'd go for it.
I had a queen bed in a huge room - one of the biggest hotel rooms I've been in. There was even a walk-in wardrobe (a small one)!
The room had what I expected from a basic (without frills) hotel room - it was clean, the shower head was attached to the wall (as opposed to having to hold it yourself) and had good pressure, the bathroom was well set out (i.e the toilet didn't get wet while you had a shower), the bed was comfortable and the TV had a remote control. It gets extra points for the huge room - still can't get over how big the room was, for a hotel room anyway. Service at the front desk was very friendly and efficient.
The only slight downside is that it's located in a quiet part of the city - still close enough to walk to the main sites (Fisherman's Wharf etc) and on very good bus routes - but not as close as some of the other (more expensive) hotels. So, if you don't want to walk for more than 10-15 minutes to get somewhere, this place isn't for you.
If you decide to stay, there are some fantastic shops / restaurants located on Union St, about 15 minutes walk from the hotel.
Would definitely recommend this hotel - but don't expect any frills.

A quick, simple stay

I just came from a three night stay at the Travelodge By The Bay. I chose it because of price, the fact I was travelling alone (not with my family) and that it was close to the Wharf area. I could justify paying $100/night for myself, but not $140+/night.
This is a 2 star hotel. As other reviewers have indicated, it doesn't pretend to be anything else. The hotel is comprised of two adjacent buildings which are not connected; you have to go to the street in front of the property to switch buildings. I stayed in the building with the inside corridors (room 102) with parking completely underneath the building in an enclosed area. The other building has all the doors on the outside of the hotel in a U-shape, and the parking is all outside/exposed (although some are covered).
The room itself was basic; bathroom had the toilet/shower/tub, and the sink was outside/part of the main room (on my immediate right as I entered the room from the hallway). The king sized bed was nice and comfortable, and the TV reception was OK with atleast as many channels (Showtime for movies, no HBO) as other hotels. The room was cleaned daily to my expectations. Towels were not plush...rather thin and small...but enough for me (a regular guy) to dry myself off after a shower.
The staff was very helpful. When I checked in, I indicated that I wanted to walk down to the Wharf. The gentleman at the front desk told me to come by after I was settled and he'd give me directions, which he happily did when I returned later. He assured me that between the hotel and the Wharf was a safe walk, and after three nights of walking it, I agree. (I disagree with an earlier review that said it was a 15 minute distance to Ghiradelli...it's only about 3-4 blocks away, and took me about 8 minutes to get there).
I had a package sent to me via UPS at the hotel (replacement cell phone charger), and the staff at the front desk held it for me when it arrived and even left a message for me on my room phone (message light was blinking).
There was no internet access here, and I believe all calls carried a charge (including local calls). There was a $11.40 per day parking charge (which was not noted on TripRewards website when I made my reservation), and a parking space was NOT guaranteed. This made me a little nervous about taking my car out, especially because there was only one spot left when I checked in. However, I did not have a problem with finding parking.
Breakfast consisted of coffee, tea and a plastic-wrapped breakfast danish.
One interesting thing about my room: it had a window which looked out at a wall...and a steampipe. The steampipe was made up to look like the Golden Gate Bridge...a detail only someone in my room would notice. That was a neat...and interesting...touch.
Overall, it wasn't a bad stay. I liked it and it's proximity. For me, it was fine. For my family...I'd spend a little more and stay closer to the Wharf in a little classier accomodations. But if I were in the area again on my own...I'd definately consider another stay.

Buy the city pass-it is $54 and has tickets to several museums-an aquarium, coupons for tours, and 7 day pass for all MUNI transportation(buses, cable cars, street cars...) walking can be brutal...but I am in bad shape and made it through..fun adventure...walk up the 259 steps on Lombard (crookedest street) Take a bay cruise...take an Alcatraz tour....and take a tour of Muir Woods (freshest nummiest air I have ever breathed) Enjoy!!! Lots of inexpensive jackets, sweatshirts, t-shirts, etc. down on the wharf. Eat a Bubba Gumps on Pier 39...awesome views and great food!!!
