There was a happy ending

I had booked two rooms. Unfortuntely when they arrived from the UK they only had confirmation for 1 room, even though we provided confirmation numbers for two rooms. The long and short of the story is that they ended up getting a cheaper rate for the second room. Which is obviously very good because they had a room available. If they did not have a room available then I would not be allowed to book the same hotel again. As it was it there was a happy ending !!!!

My room at the St. Francis had dirty sheets, a bathroom door that would not close, and a previous tenant's food in the refrigerator. When I called to have the food removed I returned to the room and the staff had taken the food out of the refrigerator and left in on the counter instead. I would not suggest this hotel.

Great service. A superb San Francisco experience.

Loved our grand room in the Westin St. Francis

from A TripAdvisor Member
Our room in the Westin St. Francis was huge, with a beautiful view of Union Square. We were actually offered a free upgrade to a suite, but my kids didn't want to move. (I heard from the front desk staff that the room sizes in the old part of the hotel are extremely variable- some rooms are huge, and some are small. Perhaps some of the people who have written negative reviews were not lucky enough to get one of the larger rooms in the older part of the hotel.) I've actually never stayed in a hotel room as large (the ceilings were extremely high) and grand as this particular one. We got an excellent deal on our room directly through the hotel web site.

The bedding (they call it "heavenly") was wonderful & the bath items (lotion, soap, shampoo) were really fragrant.

The location of the hotel was great. Although the hotel restaurants were very expensive, there were plenty of low-cost restaurants (e.g.
Jack in the Box, for a quick take out breakfast) within walking distance of the hotel. The people in the lobby were all well-dressed- this is definitely a place that people dress up to visit.

The front desk staff was not extremely friendly, but neither were they rude. I would rate the service as average.

The weather in San Francisco is great in summer & there is so much to do there. I would love to return there and to stay in the same room at the St. Francis. It was really beautiful.

overrated and old

from ctmangelmom
although a great location, this hotel way overrated to us. First we were stuck in the "Old" building (they try to call it the "historic" building to add charm, but it smelled and had mold all over the bathroom. The room was tiny and our window overlooked a alley. Then they moved us to a better room with a "murphy bed"! Then we did get a nice bed in the new tower, but the hotel is extememly noisy at night!
Overall, just an average experience for a very pricey hotel.

Nice Hotel shame about the service

from A TripAdvisor Member
The hotel was great and the lcoation was okay for us as we like to walk around. However the management need to make some changes as this hotel does not cater for families/tourists, the lobby was full of suits all day and you couldnt really relax anywhere in the hotel as you were surrounded by mobile phones. I must state that the room was very clean and tidy but thats why its so expensive. The location was good for shopping but again families/tourists shoud look around the seafront area for hotels as families wont enjoy the long haul to reach the tourist areas. Oh and by the way dont go to the roof top restaurant as we did because its now been changed to a private funstion only and you will get thrown out as we were. Also dont stay near the lifts in the new tower as they can be extremely noisy at night.

Overall - A nice hotel but does not cater for tourists!!!!!

Miserable experience at the Westin St. Francis

from A TripAdvisor Member
My experience with the Westin St. Francis hotel was miserable. I had a ring missing from my hotel room. Their first re-action was that this never happens at their hotel. Then they kept asking me if I checked my room thoroughly. I explained that I checked so thoroughly, I found black panties that were not mine and condoms that were not mine. Even after telling them this, they kept asking if I checked the room. This was very annoying. The safe did not work and this became an issue with their insurance. They told thier insurance the safe did work but neglected to say that it only worked after they fixed it after my ring was missing. They treated me with no respect. To me, service is what a hotel is about, and the service was horrible. Who cares what the rooms are like if you are treated like dirt.
Management Response from SanFranciscoMary
The security department at the Westin St Francis exhibits the utmost care and concern when serving our guests. We have installed safes which are large enough to accommodate laptops and other large items. Our guests have told us how much they appreciate this feature in every guest room.

Wonderfully romantic

from A TripAdvisor Member
Have stayed at other hotels in the Union Square area, and for the rate, the Westin St. Francis is my choice. The room was large enough with a partial view of Union Square and quiet enough for a sound sleep. The bed was very comfortable. Hotel staff were courtious and prompt. Very romantic....

Loved the Westin St. Francis

My wife is from S.F. but has not been home in 35 years. So we decided to take a trip down memory lane. Stayed 7 nights at the Westin St. Francis and had a fabulous time! We went to check out all the other comparable hotels and they were all dead. The St. Francis was the only one that was lively. The lobby was always full of people, as well as the Compass Rose (the lounge). It was a great place for people watching. We wound up staying in the older section, but had a corner room, which was very large and also had a large bathroom. We enjoyed our trip so very much that we plan to go back next year and stay at the same hotel. The Webster's

Overrated Hotel

from A TripAdvisor Member
We were quite excited to have booked our stay at The Westin St.
Francis. We stayed there for two nights and three days. After reading a number of accolades about this hotel, we have to conclude that it is overrated. The hotel itself appeared beautiful, but the room left something to be desired. Our bathroom had a musty scent, like towels that never dry, and a burned out flourescent light. Our "key" did not open our door, so we called the front desk. They told us to wait outside our door and security would be up. We waited for 15 minutes and no one showed up. We had to call again, and waited another 10 minutes before security finally showed up. Also, we wanted to do an Express Check-Out. We were advised that an envelope would be placed under our door. We called the front desk and they advised us that someone would be up shortly. Nothing came so we decided to go to the front desk. They told us that we weren't going to get one because everything was paid in advance. Why didn't they tell us earlier and save us a 15 minute wait in line to talk with someone at the front desk? Our next stay will definitely not be at The Westin St. Francis. I have stayed at other Westins and have had outstanding experiences. This was definitely a departure from my expectations.

Location...and not much else

from NightsontheRoad
Let's start with the positives - the hotel is conveniently located on Union Square, near just about everything in San Francisco.

Being located on Union Square is not all fun and games. Expect to be woken up by loud noises, frequent sirens, people banging on buckets at all hours of the night. Bring earplugs and aspirin - you're going to need them both!

Staff is friendly, but the elevators are slow and the rooms are small.
Also, check your bill carefully - make sure they don't try to add a movie like they did on mine!

Good room, good bed; poor management.

Ever have to call for a maid to make your room at 5PM at a ****(?) hotel? Ever have both room keys deactivated half-way through your stay?
Ever get billed $39 for a night's parking with no car? Westin St.
Francis provided us with all of this without apology over July 4 weekend 2003. Damn good bed.
