Excellent Service and Value!
from A TripAdvisor MemberThe rooms were very well-appointed, modern, and tastefully decorated, although not as chic or hip as the W (still my favorite hotel in SF).
You also get a HUGE bathroom. However, be careful using the sink - if you turn the knob too fast you'll get a face full of water.
We got free high-speed internet connection, although it seemed spotty at times. The rooms also have a DVD with *FREE* DVD rentals. Nothing like winding down with a couple of DVDs after a busy day in SF.
Never bothered eating at Solea or trying the free contintental breakfast. With so many great places to eat in SF, we just couldnt spare to time to try the hotel dining. Chinatown just a couple blocks down the street and there is a great little cafe next to the hotel if you want brunch (Roxanne's I believe).
A cable car stop sits right outside the hotel. However, don't bother waiting for one. The cars are so packed with tourists that you'll never catch a ride. Cable cars are overrated anyways. Don't bother paying $3 to be packed in like sardines with some overweight man's rear practically planted into your lap.
The Orchard doesnt boast the same flare as some of the larger chain hotels in the city, but that is part of its charm. It is so low-key, its almost like a hidden jewel. If you go boutique, I definitely recommend the Orchard.
Go and stay

Staff particularily helpfull
Modern, clean and excellent value
from A TripAdvisor MemberA Great Hotel at a Great Price
from A TripAdvisor MemberIt is two blocks off of Union Square and central to everything. Any transportation is nearby and most places are walkable.
The staff is exceptionally courteous and were delightful for the duration of the stay.
The rooms are exceptionally clean and well appointed with down comforters and pillows on the bed, Aveda products in the bathroom and ample space to move around in all areas.
Each room also has a 27" Sony TV and a Sony Dream System DVD player with 5.1 surround sound. Great for those nights when your too tired to go out and want to get pizza and movie for the room which is particularly easy because there is a great pizza place on the corner and the hotel has a substantial DVD library which is full of all types of films new and old available free to guests. How many places can you find that?
Not to mention the all important free continental breakfast. A great spread of fruit, bagels, muffins, cold cuts and much more. A great way to start your day.
We will definitely return to the Orchard for our future visits to San Fran (and that is quite a few).
Awesome hotel
from A TripAdvisor MemberThe front dest staff was friendly, and the door man was very helpful.
We enjoyed up-to-date DVD every night. The free continental breakfast was nice. The location was perfect to enjoy San Francisco. The only thing that you need to remember is that the space in front of the front desk is not very spacious. Other than this we had fabulous experience in Orchard Hotel.
Would Do it Again
from A TripAdvisor MemberA Jewel in Fog City
from A TripAdvisor MemberGreat way to end a vacation
from A TripAdvisor MemberWe took the BART from the airport to the hotel (after dropping off the rent-a-car to avoid paying for three more nights) and it was a short ride. $4.70/per person and it gets off very close to the hotel. Every review so far has accurately pointed out that you don't need a car if you stay at the Orchard. Our room was amazing, especially after staying in a not at all great hotel in Monterey. It is actually one of their sister hotels and the Victorian Inn in Monterey is advertised in a book in the Orchard's lobby. However, they are worlds apart in quality. Our bathroom was spotless and always filled with fresh bottles of shampoo and conditioner; we rented 5 DVDs in total-- several of which were brand new. The beds were amazing and we were on the alley. The noise was almost nothing. The only thing I really wanted to add was that there is a 50's style diner down Powell street towards Union Square called Lori's. They have amazing milk shakes and it is a great place to take kids if you have them. Also, eat at the Cheese Cake Factory-- it is on top of Macy's in Union Square which is a five minute walk from this wonderful hotel. In total, we stayed at 3 hotels in San Fran. The Orchard rivaled the Parke Hyatt, so I confident in saying you will love this hotel.
Orchard is Top Notch
from eschwartzLoved the Orchard!
from fundattyTop Local Tips for San Francisco
public transportation is very good You can buy a one day, three day and one week transit pass that is good on every part of the municipal system including cable cars, Bay area rapid transit inside the city of San Francisco and bus and trolley cars. You can get everywhere within the city. Bay area rapid transit now runs from the airport into San Francisco and is very inexpensive.
a stopover go in feb/march - weather was fab and the sun shone all the time - t shirt and shorts!!
Practical San Francisco travel tips You only need a car for seeing wine country, golden gate, ocean beach and other nearby beaches etc.. which are well worth a quick visit even in winter (as we did). Ditch your hire car as soon as possible because parking costs arround 30-50 dollars a night, depending on hotel, and the central city is bes experienced by walking. However, you need to be moderately fit, as there are many hills. When you have the car, a great view can be had from the hill uppon which the huge H shaped radio mast sits (can be seen from all arround the city)
