A wonderful Character Inn

from tourcox
We had a great time at Inn San Francisco. The staff are very friendly......from Marty the owner, Fred the manager, ro the rest of the staff........every effort is made to make your stay enjoyable.
The morning breakfast was delicious....with lots of delicious home made Quiches, bread, & a wide variety of cold meats, cheeses & eggs. The rooms are very comfortable, clean & have much character...filled with antiques. The neighbourhood felt safe enough for us to walk around each evening......This was our 6th stay..& we will return..Paul & Lee

Beautiful Inn but beware of the neighborhood! Serious Warning.

Though the Inn itself is very beautiful, it is located in the hood. I read all the positive reviews and thought it would be a great place for my husband and I to stay for our vacation to S.F. To avoid driving downtown we walked through the neighborhood to take the subway. We felt terrified to walk in the neighborhood and feared for our lives the whole trip. The subway station was filthy, full of homeless people, and full of trash. I have traveled extensively in the U.S. from D.C. to Seattle to NYC, and have never felt more afraid to walk in a neighborhood or at a train station. We paid for a taxi on the trip back because it was dark and there was no way we were going to take that trip on foot in the dark! You have to pay for a parking spot in a rented garage across the street from the inn if you have a car. We did this, but the street people who lived nearby were always hanging around the garage. They approached my husband and I and started to question us about who we were, what we were doing there etc. We quickly got into our car. When leaving one of the men chased our car and started pounding his fist into the side of it screaming obscenities. We were SO VERY sorry we had stayed in the neighborhood!!!! It ruined our vacation by undermining our safety. It's a shame because the INN is very pretty, and the people friendly. It is also far from downtown and any attractions that you'd want to see in S.F. Unless you have an iron backbone and can handle rough neighborhoods I would suggest you stay elsewhere. Good luck!

The Inn is perfect!

This B&B is wonderful! Where to start? Well, we arrived early on the day of our booking and were treated to breakfast and a tour of the Inn. The owner, Marty, is great, cheerful, friendly and funny. The Inn itself has the following: a wonderful city view from the roof, beatiful victorian decor, a great hot tub, beautiful gardens a wonderful breakfast spead, and lovely rooms. Our room had a hot tub, king size bed, and Asian decor(designed by Marty's wife). All staff members were friendly and helpful. Having breakfast in the morning afforded the opportunity to meet other guests as well.

The hotel's location is cool. The Mission is packed with restaurants, bars and shops. It is a one-stop train ride to the city, or a $5 - 15 cab ride anywhere you want to go. We also caught buses to the Haight area.

If you want to experience San Fran, stay at the Inn!

t be disappointed!

Booked to stay at The Inn, SF for 4 nights this October, directly as a result of reading the many positive reviews posted on this website. Thankfully, previous guests didn't let us down and we had a truly memorable stay.

The hotel itself is pretty awe-inspiring, from the grand front steps, through to the incredibly quirky and well-decorated interior. Imagine Victoriana at it's best, with the added comforts of 2006! We loved the friendly owners and staff (very knowledgeable - area map drawn from memory!), the added little touches (chocolates in the room every day, free hot drinks all day), the breakfast (lots of comments on here already about it - yum!) and the general feeling that you were in the middle of a city, and yet still a little removed from reality!

I actually fail to see how anyone could have a bad stay at this B&B, but probably worth considering a couple of points before booking. Firstly, don't expect the area to be the sanitised tourist comfort of Fisherman's Wharf. Mission sees it's fair share of homeless people and bored youths on street corners, but admittedly, we saw quite a lot of that elsewhere in the city - no problems caused, but a little intimidating, especially at night. It's also a fair hike from downtown, so do expect to use public transport - the bus is an experience in itself! Saying this, it was for exactly these reasons that we loved the area. Explore with the tourists by day, then meander back to the hotel late-afternoon, and feel as though you are actually experiencing life with the people who live there! The nearby restaurants (tucked away, so ask for recommendations) are absolutely excellent and we stumbled across lots of funky little bars for after dinner drinks.

Also - if you can, stretch the budget and go for one of the larger rooms. We were penny-pinching, so had to go for one of the smallest - and it is very small! Nothing really to complain about as this was offset by the general excellence elsewhere, but would have been nice to spread out a bit more (and the other rooms looked gorgeous!)

All in all if you do your research and decide if you're happy being slightly removed from tourist-central, then I doubt you'll find a better B&B in San Francisco.

Will Certainly Return

Couldn't have been more satisfied. Great location, clean rooms and friendly staff. Truly a city Inn...dozens of great local restaurants within a block and walkable to Catro St. for some partying at night. Not touristy at all...you really get the feel of living in a locals neighborhood of San Fran. Yet only a few miles from the tourist attractions by cab or transit when you want it. Marty and Connie + staff know how to run an Inn. TOP NOTCH!!

Lovely place

from Dan_leeds
The whole hotel experience was amazing, a lovely atmosphere, lovely period surroundings and excellent little details. We loved the breakfast, roof terrace and hot tub in the garden. The only downside was our very small room, in hindsight it would be worthwhile spending more on having a larger room. The location was also slightly odd, it was too far for downtown and the Castro and we really had to get used to the local bus system to get ourselves about town. The area is slightly intimidating and it doesn't feel the safest of places to be if you're not used to cities, we had no trouble though. This would certainly be a hotel for special occasions or if you want to treat yourself, but be aware that it's not a great location.

Inn SF

from Whiffen
Funky location. Close to BART station at 24th and Mission. Even better, close to La Taqueria and Taqueria Cancun ! These are two of my favorite taquerias. Many more in the neighbourhood. Morning breakfast buffet at the inn is awesome - including a large selection of fresh fruits, ham, bread, boiled eggs. Great view from the roof. One of the downside is that it could get a bit noisey from the neighbourhood at night. Overall, a great place and I have not hesitation of returning.

Great place ... but watch the area

from BertyBrit
This is a lovely Victorian on South Van Ness, which is furnished in keeping with the period. The Inn is friendly and offers incredibly good value, both in terms of lodging - one room has queen size bunk beds and a spa bath - and an extensive breakfast, which is eaten in the parlour and consists of various fresh fruits, quiches, flans, breads, cheeses etc. The Inn also has a hot tub, which guests are invited to use (but silently after 10pm to avoid disturbing the sleepers).

The only drawback to this accomodation is its location, in that this part of the Mission District may not be seen by some to be a comfortable area to walk late at night. Saying this, the attractions of down town and the piers are but a short cab/car ride away.

We enjoyed our stay very much.

The Best

from DK
My partner and I have stayed at The Inn San Francisco several times in the last 15 years. There is no better bed & breakfast inn, and we have stayed at several. The houses (there are two, one built in the late 1800s, one built in the early 1900s) are beautiful, particularly the main house which is a grand Victorian. The rooms are gorgeous, furnished with antiques, and truly give you a feel of what life might have looked like in the Victorian era. The breakfast is sumptuous. We're not talking sweet rolls here. They serve fresh baked breads and muffins (baked that morning), quiche (baked that morning), hard-cooked eggs, fresh fruit, ham and salami, cereals, fresh orange juice, wonderful coffee, tea, hot chocolate. Joseph Schmidt truffles are provided in the room daily (a local San Francisco candy maker -- the best), as well as fresh fruit. Coffee, tea, hot chocolate is available all day, as well as sherry. There is a wonderful garden to relax in, and a hot tub that is beautiful and romantic. There is a roof-top patio that affords guests a wonderful view of the entire city. The common areas are welcoming, beautiful, and make you feel right at home. Fred, the Inn's manager, goes above and beyond the call of duty. The bottom line is you are made to feel like a guest, and you are treated like a guest in the best way possible at all times. You get your money's worth here, and it is money well spent.

A great B and B

from Clare100
The Inn San Francisco was the first place that we stayed at, on our trip to the States. We thought that it was a great place to stay. The manager (Fred) and owner (Marty) were very welcoming and helpful in getting us orientated to the local and downtown areas. It is in the Mission area, which felt a little dodgy at first, but it turned out to be a really hip place to stay, wander round and eat (lots of different eateries). The Inn was clean and comfortable and had all mod cons around the antique furnishings. The buffet breakfast (fruit, muffins, cakes, breads, cereals) was tasty and substantial, setting us well up for the day ahead. Our room was on the snug side, but this did not bother us, since we were only there at nights (being out all day). It was a great find through the Trip Advisor website and we would recommend it to people wanting to have something different from the usual downtown big hotels.
