Using Hotwire, got this hotel for $99/night when associates were staying 1 block away for $299/night. Accomodations were great!

Historical Traveller Reviews of Hotel Palomar

The lowest level of service that I have ever had to deal with

from A TripAdvisor Member
The Kimpton Group did a great job with the decor of the Palomar hotel. I stayed at the Palomar when it first opened and was extremely happy with the staff, and accommodations. Recently, I visited the Palomar again and it will be the last time. Brian the so call General Manager was the most unprofessional person in the hotel. He is rude when addressing me by my first name and I made appoint to ask him not to do so, however he used my first name once again. Later, my girl friend was in the lobby and overheard Brian discussing with his staff the fact that when he has his own hotel company he wouldn't take business similar to myself. I spent over $2,500 in four days t the Palomar and that we be the last penny that the Kimpton Group will see from me unless they remove people like Brian.

I love this hotel. It is intimate, comfortable, perfectly situated, and a joy to return to. Good bed, furniture, lights, amenities (esp.
complimentary high-speed modem). So comfortable, and an intelligent, attentive staff.

awesome hotel for $109!

we lucked out and got a very spacious room (wheelchair accessible). the staff was friendly and accomodating. the room was nicely decorated, the linens were luxurious, the bathroom spotless, and the bed was COMFY!
fantastic location and definately worth the deal we found on hotwire.
the lobby is well decorated and small but could use a few more chairs for lounging.

Great location, but beware!

After extensive research, we chose the Palomar hotel for a three day stay just before Thanksgiving. Rates run $175-400, but if you look on sites like Expedia you can get a deal (we paid $119/night) The hotel's own website says that they will match any rate you find on the web, and give you an upgrade to the best room available if you book through them....Do NOT believe them! They honored the rate, but would not upgrade us, even though upgraded rooms and suites were available (we checked through the website). The room was clean and fairly small, but the bed was comfy, and we didn't spend any time in the room anyway.
Also, VERY IMPORTANT....parking is $36/day plus $5/day tax=$41/day to park your car.....more than the cost of the rental car! Front desk clerks double as the concierge and are generally useless....they can read off a list of suggested places to see/eat, but have no knowledge of their own. Bottom line.....not bad for $119/night because you are steps from Union Square and a short walk to Chinatown, but if you are used to 5 star service/quality, this isn't the place for you.

Mediocre service but nice rooms

If you are a non-smoker like me, make sure you check in early. We booked a non-smoking room with late check in. When we arrived they checked us in but did not tell us we were being put in a smoking room.
We got to the room and found a distinct odor of stale smoke in the furniture and bedding - and the windows did not open. Since the hotel was sold out, they refused to move us until the next morning, and the staff were not overly apologetic about the situation. They said non-smoking rooms are not guarenteed to any guests- had I known this I might not have stayed there!! However, to be fair, once we were moved our stay was much more pleasant. The beds are extremely comfy and the rooms are very classy. Unfortunately there is no real lobby to speak of, and I often felt like a number rather than a valued guest. I was in San Francisco for a special occasion with my boyfriend, and was disappointed by the service. I would recommend this hotel to others but would advise you to check in early for a room with a decent view and a room that does not smell like an ashtray.

It was our visit from to SF from Scotland and thought the hotel location was fantastic, as were the rooms. The fuji spa tub was definitely required after a whole day pounding the sreets of SF. The only minor gripe was the non availibilty of coffee making facilities in the room and the too formal lounge/restaurant which appeared slightly intimidating for those on vacation. Otherwise, we would recommend this hotel to anyone as it contributed greatly to a stay in a city that we completely fell in love with.

Wonderful Hotel! Great Location!

We just returned from our first trip to San Francisco. We loved the entire trip and the Palomar was wonderful. We stayed in their smallest rooms, which were ample in size for a downtown hotel. Service was excellent. We had the breakfast package, which I highly recommend.
Breakfast was at the Fifth Floor Restaurant and it was superb! Lastly, the location of the hotel was great. We were practically across the street from Union Sqaure and Chinatown was only a few blocks away. I highly recommend this hotel!

great hotel

My wife and I stayed at the Palomar for 5 nights starting the Saturday of Labor day weekend. I had done a lot of research and thought this hotel would be the best for us. We were not disappointed. The hotel is in a fantastic location right on Market street and close to everything.
The service was great and our room was wonderful. We had reserved a luxury king and were upgraded to the suite. The room was very nice. It was great having the bedroom separate from the rest of the room and the fuji tub is very nice. We did opt to get a car while in San Franciso and while the parking rate of $36/day is a bit steep it was well worth having the freedom to explore the Bay area by car. The valet was extremely helpful w/ directions and telling us the best way to get around. We used the car to go to Muir Woods, Golden Gate Bridge and Park, Montery Bay, Carmel, the 17 mile drive and to Napa. We would highly recommend going to San Franciso if you have never been. The weather is perfect and the city is awesome. If you do go you cannot go wrong staying at the Palomar.

Luxury hotel with down-home service

After conducting extensive web research, I chose the Palomar for my stay in San Francisco last week on vacation. I found a wonderful deal for the room, but I was concerned my husband and I would be stuck in the broom closet. Thankfully, my fears were unfounded. Staying at the Palomar was overall a lovely experience, during which we were treated as first class guests. I will say, though, that I missed having a "real" lobby area, and the concierge service was spotty, since the concierge also doubles as a front-desk worker (believe me, the desk can be quite busy at all times of the day). However, all the staff were quite friendly and tried to be helpful in any way. The room was well-decorated, the beds were comfortable, and the towels/bath fixtures were sumptuous. Be sure to take advantage of the Fifth Floor restaurant -- the hotel holds a few tables for hotel guests, so there's no need to try for an impossible-to-get reservation before you go. While pricey, the dining experience is worth it!! The location is prime, close to all public transportation, yet somehow the interior of the hotel managed to be completely sound-proof to the extremely noisy street. Very relaxing environment. Check around on the major travel websites for deals on this hotel, and you won't be disappointed.

Palomar: Polarized opinions

from A TripAdvisor Member
I don't expect much from a hotel except for a room and bed. The Palomar failed to meet that standard by refusing my reservation and referring me to the Marriott on day 1. No big deal, it happens. The next day at 3pm the front desk took 45 minutes to check me in because they were still oversold. I basically blew 2 days begging my way in to this place, and still couldn't get a king bedded room. The staff appears to be doing everything for the first time, learning as they go. They really should get their act together. No internet access in my room, when I asked the concierge for the local Yahoo dialup number he offered to change my room (not again!). He didn't get me the phone number, must've been too difficult a request. Nice rooms, comparable to a "W", more or less. With such polarized experiences with the Palomar, I'd suggest you stay elsewhere in SF, it's a great city with lots of other hotel choices!
