Staff is GREAT. Helpful with everything. If we had questions, they would look it up on the internet for us and print out information.

Historical Traveller Reviews of Hotel Bijou

Lovely clean hotel

from SueMiller
We stayed at the Bijou for 4 nights in July 2004. Our room was smaller than expected but it was comfortable and clean and we spent most of our days sightseeing anyway! The staff are wonderful and there is a complimentary breakfast. There were a few drunks that congregated about 50 feet from the hotel each day but they didn't annoy anyone. Our room was on the fourth floor facing the street. There was a bit of traffic noise and occassionally noise from pedestrians but it didn't bother us.
Hotel Bijou is a lovely hotel to stay at and I would stay there again.

Nice Hotel

from LizOhio
I just got back from a conference in San Francisco. My colleagues and I stayed all over the Union Square area, and my experience at the Bijou was the most positive of our group who tried the botique hotels. The hotel was extremely clean and well kept. I am very particular about this kind of thing, and have spent a lot of time at other hotels asking to be moved. Not here. The room was small (which I expected), but nicely appointed and very clean. Even the bathroom sparkled. This might have been the only hotel I've ever stayed at where housekeeping didn't rudely wake me up at 8am. The housekeeping staff was very thoughtful about when they cleaned the rooms and they did a great job. The front desk staff was really friendly and knew a lot about the city. The only downside of the hotel is that our room faced the side stree (Eddy?) which housed both an all night liquor store and an all night "all male" theatre. In theory that's not a problem, but the reality was the noise from the street was pretty bad. I wore earplugs but still had trouble getting any sleep. I'd suggest staying at this hotel but requesting a room that faces the main street and/or stay on the top floor. Or just buy better earplugs than I had. :)

We had a great time!

from Boopsquared
My friend and I just got back from San Fran with a three night stay at the Hotel Bijou. Their staff was very friendly and the continental breakfast was fresh each morning. The maid was very efficiant and left our rooms very clean (word of caution though-make sure you don't leave medication out...We'll leave it at that!)
The hotel is an old building with very, very little sound proofing. We could hear both our neighbors upstairs and downstairs through the bathroom window. Everything was very clean though. The location is great... but be careful at night. We were warned not to walk down the near by streets after dark. I would recommend this hotel for lesiure tourists who arn't counting on a lot of sleep. The price was right! One block from Union Square! We had a great adventure!!!

Good location, good value, friendly service

from A TripAdvisor Member
I had one night in San Francisco before a flight, and picked this hotel mainly based on its close proximity to BART Powell St station (30 minutes ride to SFO) and price. The hotel was average. My 3rd floor room was a bit small and dark. I could hear people talking in the next room. But it was spotlessly clean, the 4 or 5 hotel staff I interacted with were all nice and friendly, and the included breakfast was a nice touch (if a bit unnecessary given the excellent breakfast options nearby). Note there is no AC, but not a problem in March. Can't ask for more for this price.

Perfect Location

This clean and charming hotel is well located near Union Square for all your shopping and eating. Clean and very charming. The staff is ready to help with directions and help in selecting restaurants. This was our second visit and will continue to select this hotel when visiting San Francisco.

Good

from BADallas
This hotel is a great value. Good location to the public transportation. It is not a full service hotel. However, just about anything that you need is a short walk. I did not realize just how close it was to the cable car, Nordstroms and many other convienences. The staff is very friendly. The rooms are small but, they suited my needs. If it weren't for the noise, I would give this hotel an excellent (for the price).

So fun and different

from MyBoysRule
The Hotel Bijou is a treat for anyone who is tired of the traditional hotel atmosphere and the dry service in large chain hotels (and it is in a great Union Square location!). The lobby is a wonderful movie theater theme right down to the plush velvet furniture and the popcorn and candy bars at the front desk.

The room was a fair size (we had a queen/queen) but what really made it great was how absolutely clean it was. This room could have passed a white glove test right down to the bathroom floors and shower grout. It looked almost new. There were no scuff marks on the walls, no rust, no dirt anywhere to be found. There were also a couple of nice extras like 3 excellent travel books for San Francisco, nice quality toiletries and a cork screw.

The front desk staff is very nice. We came down to catch a few minutes of "So I Married and Ax Murderer" in their theater and they took care of us with cocoa, hot chocolate and snacks.

The two down sides - it is noisy, noisy, noisy and the valet parking is very slow. Although the walls seemed to be pretty thick - we could not hear any noise from inside the hotel, the street noise is really bad. The side of the hotel is on a street that had a lot of noisy homeless people and a very loud nightclub. We were exhausted so we crashed and slept through most of it, but there is certainly no guarantee of a perfectly peaceful night's sleep. I think you have to go to the 20th floor of a newer building for total quiet near Union Square. We thought it was a small price to pay, however, for such a great place. We would certainly be back.

Great boutique hotel

from NZSailfish
We stayed at the Bijou twice in July and August 2004. I was cautious after reading some of the reviews. The hotel was great. We were on the 6th floor in a light spacious room and did not notice any undue noise. Yes there were beggars around the area, but they were all over San Francisco and a number of other cities we visited. My husband gave them abit of free kiwi advice if they approached us and they were polite and wandered off. The hotel has free breakfast which we either shared in the dining room or happily took back to our room and enjoyed. Bijou is good value for money and a perfect location and we'll be staying again when we visit San Francisco.

What a city !

from A TripAdvisor Member
We recently visited San Francisco and stayed at the Bijou. We were on our honeymoon so we wanted to make it special, first of all the staff were very helpful & friendly. We thought the hotel was situated in a perfect position to visit all the sights. The rooms were comfortable and very clean. The price was very reasonable and we would recommend this hotel to anybody. If you have any questions please feel free to email us.

Good value for money

from LAustralia
My husband and I stayed here for 3 nights in June 2004. Staff were more than helpful, nice breakfast, rooms very clean. Only problem was the noise on the main street downstairs. Would stay here again if ever in San Francisco.

Top Local Tips for San Francisco

day trips take the trolley to Fishermans Wharf for a day of good food and great scenery espcially pier 39. The Muir woods, across the golden gate bridge was fun and a chance to get away from a busy city and see some amazing redwoods.

Johnny Foley's Irish Pub We had a really good meal at the unassuming Johnny Foley's Irish Pub in Union Square in San Francisco. Great salads, fries and atmosphere! They also have live music, but lots of little areas so you can be somewhat separated from it if you prefer.

Get the Bay City Guide It has excellent maps, including mass transit, Union Square, Golden Gate Park, and Fisherman's Wharf. Numerous coupons also. It's free.
