A bit cockroachy...

While the location is quite good, the Dakota Hotel lacks for cleanliness and service and comes with cockroaches included. I found a cockroach in my bed (!) on my last night there, and this situation was met with apathy and some arrogance by the management. I have had no satisfaction in my attempts to communicate with the owner, and my request for a compensatory discount has been ignored.

We stayed for four nights in November 2005. The hotel is not the most modern in terms of building or fittings but was clean , reasonably priced and certainly offered us, we believe, value. It is situated nicely for the fantastic sights of this beautiful city. Perhaps, if to be picky, the car parking is not ideal ie. pull up outside on a meter, then have a valet from car park across the street take the vehicle away. When you need the car again, up to a twenty minute wait for it to be brought to the door, all for $20 a day.

If you want the real San Francisco experience, The Dakota Hotel is right for you. The Dakota is a hotel like none other. There is no doubt in my mind that The Dakota is one of the best places to stay while you're in San Francisco. It's a very clean, very quiet, very friendly and close to everything type of hotel. This hotel has it all! I had a wonderful experience and I have and will recommend it to all my friends.

I liked the hotel. The price was very reasonable, and the location was superb. It is a little noisy at night from the outside traffic, but nothing too disturbing. I would definitely stay at this hotel again if I am in San Francisco.

Cable car Once in San Francisco, buy a weekly cable car ticket from a ticket booth, don't just buy single tickets - you will save $$$

walk just walk, and walk and walk

Get a Muni pass! Buy a 1, 3 or 7 day Muni passport if you are planning on using public transport more than once. Especially if you're going to be riding the cable cars more than once. And, really, the cable cars are a good way to get between Fisherman's Wharf and Union Square. The busses and streetcars are also good ways to get around.
