Historical Traveller Reviews of Coventry Motor Inn Hotel
Great find!
from rsueProbably the best hotel for what you pay
from K.O.YAn Affordable Hidden Treasure!
from drwongNot only were their rates about half that of a larger chain, but they offered free parking (you'll pay $10-25 a day at a downtown hotel) and free high-speed wireless or broadband internet access (most of the chain hotels charge $10/day for the right). Parking spaces are tight, both in terms of physical access (underground garage beneath the hotel with columns and limited overhead clearance) and availability (on a full night, you might have to park at a sister property), but they're free.
As the photos show, the rooms are spacious. Bathrooms are spotless (the toilets were wrapped with a "Sanitized For Your Protection" strap I hadn't seen since the 1960's!). Rather than the usual concave bars of Dial soap, I was surprised to see toiletries from the Judith Jackson ("The Magic of Well-Being") Spa collection. Although the televisions were standard 1980 floor models and had no recent payper-view movies, they offered over fifty cable channels, including lots of kid-friendly options. Besides, you're in San Francisco - don't waste your day watching TV!!!
The Coventry is very convenient - blocks from the shops and restaurants on Lombard, Union, and Chestnut Streets, 5-10 minutes from the Marina and the Fort Mason, you can walk a block north and catch the 30 Muni bus to all the tourist attractions in the City - North Beach, Fishermans Wharf, Chinatown, Union Square, and the new ballpark. A late night beer & wine store is directly across the street, and a 24-hour Walgreens drug store is a half-mile west on Lombard.
Finding the hotel is extremely easy - just follow the signs to state Route 101 from SFO or the East Bay. Be warned that traffic on Van Ness and Lombard is extremely heavy during rush hour or during special events like Fleet Week, and making a left turn across Lombard is impossible. In such instances, it might be better to take Divisadero and Greenwich and use local streets to get there.
The staff is friendly and hard-working, although there is only one person working the front desk most of the time. That same person has to handle check-ins, check-outs, phone calls, and take phone messages for guests (they don't have voicemail yet), so don't expect a high degree of attention or help with your luggage (they have self-help carts available in the elevator lobby).
Great Value in San Francisco
from SPaPPLombard Street id the extension of 101 south of the Golden gate Bridge so is very busy but we were give a room away from the street and it was very quiet. The room was spacious and comfortable. It does not offer the fripperie such as an inroom fridge or pay movies but lacked for nothing else. Parking was covered and seemed secure.
From here it is possible to walk to all the key areas of the city, both waterfront and the downtown/Union Square shopping district. We also got cabs without much problem when we needed one.
San Francisco has so much to offer the visitor and iwith only 3 days we were slightly time limited. However we did tour Alcatraz, visit Sausolito and the Muir woods, as well as ride on a cable car (on the running board, which was exciting) from Powell to Market. We ate in Chinatown once, at an excellent unpretentious cafe on Grant. Other than that we ate once at a Mexican restaurant on Lombard Street near the motel and and once at a fine little restaurant right by the motel.
I would definitely stay at the Coventry again, although that part of Lombard Street has many motels from which to choose. Driving back to the airport from there was easy too.
Good Deal
from BarbosaA Good Affordable Place to Stay
from chusmilyI am in a room as I type !!!!!
from kattykattGreat Overall Value
from FredMan1212great hotel !
from israeli34Fantastic stay, amazing location
from A TripAdvisor MemberWould definately recommend it, the location was brilliant. The Wharf was a 45 minute walk away, along the coast and through a grassland park. The 30 bus takes you direct to Downtown and Chinatown, and the stop is just one street away.
Rooms were clean and spacious, staff very friendly and helpful. Also a little shop directly across from the Inn open most of the day.
We stayed on Lombard Street and were not disturbed by the noise one bit.
Will be back here on my next trip to San Francisco.
Top Local Tips for San Francisco
muni/busses Take the #30 muni, keep a transfer ticket that the bus driver will give to you & transfer to another muni that will take you along the wharf/embarcadero/Pier 39 & Ferry Building. #30 also goes to Chinatown and will take you close to Nob Hill (Fairmont & Mark Hopkins). Sat in bar area at Fairmont and my children shared a $15 hamburger--good treat and treated like royalty. We're not into the Union Square/shopping scene.
3 day MUNI passport Recommend to use it being a good value.Buy it at Hyde & Powell cable tram station
Getting around in San Francisco is SO easy! The public transportation system sells temporary passes for travelers. You can purchase 3-day, 5-day, or 7-day passes that will allow you to ride the bus (MUNI), cable cars, and street cars unlimited times. The price is a good deal and public transportation is really the only way to get around the city.
