The hotel was clean, well run and the staff helpful. The atmosphere was almost opulent, but I felt the place to be pretentious and I felt uncomfortable there. I only stayed one night and stayed somewhere else on my return trip.

Uber cool hotel, The Clift, will delight hipsters travelling through San Francisco. Sit upon the high chair in the lobby and be sure you stop in at the hotel bar on your way out your first night. Checking into the hotel, hung over from the night before, should have been a challenge, but the professional staff at The Clift's front desk, didn't miss a beat. They were courteous and helpful, in spite of my still inebriated state of mind. My fiance and I enjoyed our stay so much, we awoke on Sunday morning, drove to Tahoe, and got married. Memories? Kodak, baby.

Loved it

from A TripAdvisor Member
We just stayed at the Clift 9-13 through 9-20. The staff was wonderful we were given two upgrades, we ended up on the top floor in a corner room, that was huge and had amazing views. The staff was very helpful, courteous, and very friendly. The city itself was very nice, a little dirty, that could be improved. The hotel is in a nice location in the middle of everything. The bed was nice and comfy. The hotel is very modern looking with a young and hip crowd at night. We will be back for sure, a true gem of San Francisco

Worth the $175 price tag

We wanted a romantic escape and the Clift was quite appropriate. This is an old, traditionally built hotel that has been repainted and jazzed up with fun colors and theatrical lighting. The Redwood Room was charming with moving pictures on the walls just like in Harry Potter's Hogswarts school. The rooms were decent sized and very comfortable indeed and the decor minimalist yet pleasing. Minibar items are outrageously priced so bring your own. Room service is also outrageous - Asia de Cuba's appetizers begin at $18-22. I suggest for this price you are better off with a romantic and scrumptious 3 course meal at Gary Danko for $55. The front desk service was not very friendly - it caters to an "in" crowd and since we didn't look like Wallpaper models with an entourage, nobody really paid us any attention.

Great Service with

I just returned from a 5 night stay at the Clift. I had my reservations of staying at The Clift after reading some negative feedback on this site. After the first night I knew I was staying in a hotel that values their customers.I would not recommend this hotel for families. On the weekend it is very similar to staying at a night club. The long lines outside to get into the Redwood Room identifies the popularity of this night club. Yet you would never know there is a night club below you with very well insulated room. The room was clean and very posh. The beds have silky sheets and very romantic lighting. This is an older hotel but everything is nicely updated. The staff is very friendly and approachable. Anywhere you see a staff member they always smile and say hello. I would highly recommend consulting with the Concierge to help with transportation and advice on restaurants.I highly recommend Clift for couples wanting a romantic stay in San Francisco. I would also recommend room service. Expensive but great food.

Amazing Service!

We just got back from our Clift Hotel experience and it was awesome. I cannot stress enough how friendly and helpful the staff was. We received great recommendations, everything from the best way to get to the hotel from the airport from where to go for great meals! The experience at the Clift was exceptional and I would go back.

Like Sleeping On A Cloud

My partner and I stayed at The Clift June 26 - 30, 2003 for Pride Weekend. We got an excellent rate through Expedia and were very pleased at most everything the hotel had to offer. Pros: Luxury bedding which makes everything else seem less significant. Artistic, creative, furnishings and details (visit the hotel's website and you may understand the artistic vision). Excellent view (ask for a corner room on the highest floor available). Extremely clean room. Very polite and attractive looking staff (always opened doors and smiling). Would have loved to visit the Redwood Room but was too busy elsewhere. Excellent location near Union Square, cable cars, subway, restaurants, theaters.
Cons: It was unusually hot weekend for SF and the air in the room wasn't circulating too well. Bathroom did not seem to have a circulation fan. Room service provides any ice you need upon request but would have preferred to get my own after having to have it brought to us about 10 times. All in all an excellent place to stay if you appreciate good taste, creativity, and romance in the greatest city on the planet. Have Fun!

The Clift Hotel is Fabulous!

from BNATraveller
Words cannot express how fabulous our stay was at The Clift Hotel! We were originally booked on the club level of the Ritz Carlton for our stay (@$375 a night) and when we checked in, the room was awful! It looked like a Hampton Inn room complete with a ceiling leak and dust on the furniture. We immediately left and switched to The Clift. Our stay was glorious. The room was large and the beds (great sheets!) were very comfortable. The fitness center was small, but top-notch equipment and the business center was excellent. The hotel is in the perfect location, a block away from Union Square. Also, as an early riser, I would wake up and go to Starbucks across the street, leaving my husband and kids in the room. Then, I would go to the Fitness Center where I enjoyed the best stairmaster ever--Cybex 800. I was in heaven for 5 nights! The staff was kind, hip and happy -- the concierge, Phillipe, was beyond compare. This is the perfect hotel in our opinion and I'm sorry its gotten such sporadic reviews. We are sold on the Ian Schrager hotels and when we have the opportunity, we will stay in them!

Funky Fun

from MrsTRBE
I believe that one's experience of the Clift depends upon one's expectations. I think the Clift delivers what it promises.

I stayed there for three nights. The staff was friendly and beautiful.
They were nothing but helpful. The door was opened for me everytime, my clothes were pressed and returned to me immediately, and the clerk was very welcoming after our long flight from Florida.

The decor trendy and fun. Yes, the lobby was dark, but I felt that added to the intimate atmosphere in the well lit acloves and added a nice backdrop for the warm glow of the candles.

The rooms were small, but decorated nicely. The bed was very comfortable.

If you want the Holiday Inn experience then stay at the Holiday Inn. If you want to have a fun, casual, urban experience then the Clift is for you.

Poor poor poor

We went to the Clift on honeymoon. The rooms were minimalist and stylish, but the walls are paper thin and you can hear the person snore in the room next door. It's massively overpriced, the space is cramped, and anyone who wants a boutique hotel experience is best off finding it elsewhere. There are plenty of better hotels in San Francisco I am sure

Never Again

If you are into dark and trendy then this is the spot for you. Blaring techno music from the bar floods the foyer when you walk in. The front desk people have no more personality than Ken and Barbie (which they strongly resemble). The bathrooms are small and the shower curtain cheap (it will keep attacking you and not stay in place when you shower) for 300-400 a night you would think they could get better. The worst part was the "valet" parking where they fail to tell you it costs $40 a night to park in the garage, I could have gone around the corner for $10. Make sure you check the price list BEFORE you even think of eating anything in the room a box of animal crackers 3.75, give me a break!!! Next time Im in San Francisco I will be staying somewhere else.

Great beds and great service

from A TripAdvisor Member
We enjoyed our stay immensely at the Clift May 1-5, 2003. The beds and pillows were extremely comfortable. It is true that the walls are thin and the bathrooms are rather small. However, it was meticulously clean. Some of the reviews said the staff was snooty. I didn't find that to be the case. They were very friendly. The concierge gave good restaurant recommendations. You can get a great pot of coffee from room service for $10 after all the service charges -- but there's a Starbuck's across the street. Great Pacific Tours stops at this hotel and they offer a wonderul all-day tour of the wine country. There's also a great diner called Lori's just around the corner for a terrific breakfast. We were on the sixth floor. The decor might not be for everyone. The lobby lighting is dim, but there were ample lights and lamps in the guest rooms. Overall, a terrific place to stay. I paid $150 a night from Expedia. I recommend it.
