I chose this hotel as for my budget it was the top rated hotel-No 5,(Triadvisor)and every positive report seen was true.
We had an e-mail the day before we travelled to confirm room would be ready,so no nasty shocks upon arrival,like-- cannot find booking and full.---great PR that e-mail.
The staff at reception upon arrival were friendly and helpful and our room 1400(I reqested a high room when booking in January), was clean and airy. The furniture was clean and the beds were very comfortable with good mattresses and most important of all the bed linen was pristine white
The bathroom was very clean and well supplied with a few extras like cotton balls and buds and tissues and of course the YELLOW DUCK.
In the room too we had a walk-in cupboard,for cases, hanging spaces, an ironing board, umbrella and safe.
The TV was good with stacks of channels and we also had a modern alarm clock into which you could plug your MP player.
Down stairs you have a lobby,bar and restuarant with FREE tea or coffee and cookies from mid afternoon till evening time.
The staff were very friendly (especially Mao in the resturant-a little gem) and all were very professional in they're jobs .
The location of the hotel is a plus point too, being only 250 yards from Bart station, overlooking Union Square with all the best shops you could wish for nearby and a cable car stop outside the hotel.
This hotel has been set up and run to care for its clients and it does so in a very efficient manner, I will, upon my return to SF hopefully in not too distant future, return to this hotel , not bothering to look elsewhere. I can say honestly, hand on heart this establishment is a credit to the city and I would without question recommend it to anyone.
Read reports in hotel review sites about other hotels--rip offs, dodgy areas, paper thin walls and torn dirty bed linen---you will get nothing like that here---what they promise in the brochures is exactly what you get and delivered in a friendly professional manner.

I have satyed at the Chancellor Hotel San Francisco twice and I would stay there again. The aspects I like the most were:


- It is well located.

- The hotel in general is very clean.

- Beds, pillows & furniture are of good quality

- Service was good

- Prices were excellent


I recommended this hotel to some colleagues from work. They stayed there and they all agree with my opinion.

Thus, I do recommend it to you!

Unbelievable

We stayed here the other weekend for 3 nights. Got a great rate of $69.
We got a lot more than we asked for. Super clean rooms and bathrooms.
Rooms a bit small but you easily get over that when you consider your location next door to Union Square. Unbelievable guest service and hospitality for a small hotel. Very polite staff willing to help with anything. Free passes to Westin St. Francis gym next door. Will highly recommend for someone looking to stay in SF for a good rate and great location. Nothing bad to say at all.

Perfect for those without cars

My boyfriend and I stayed here for two nights during the holiday season. The staff was very friendly and helpful. They have complimentary coffee/tea and cookies in the lobby. There is also an umbrella in the room for you to use during your stay, which was extremely useful for us. The location is nice if you don't have a car, but if you do, parking costs $20/day self-park (a short walk away) or $28 valet with ins-outs. With that and the hectic driving conditions, I would probably not recommend staying here if you have a car. Otherwise, it's a pleasant stay...a little old for my taste, but that was expected.

Wonderful European-style hotel on Union Square

We stayed at the Chancellor December 26-27. We had two adjoining rooms for our party of 4 adults and 4 kids. The rooms were very clean and well equipped. Our rooms fronted on Powell Street, but the double pane windows kept almost all street noise out. The rooms are on the small side, but that is more than compensated by the wonderful location and the bargain prices.

You really could not ask for a better location. It's on Powell street, just a half block up from the St. Francis and across the street from Saks. The cable car goes right by the front door.

If you have a car, the self-parking at $20 with in and out privileges is a good deal. The garage is just around the corner, and the car is parked for you by attendants at the garage (the "self-parking" means you must drive the car to the garage--big deal!).

In the lobby are complimentary coffee and tea, cookies and apples. We loved the Chancellor!

Wonderful and a bargain

This place is a gem. Located on Union Square, a short walk from the Bay Area Trains (BART), which can take you directly to the airport for under $5, and with the touristic cable cars and a line of cabs just outside, you get clean, comfortable, good-sized rooms, walk-in cupboards, friendly and helpful staff and lots of other goodies. They gave us all a free breakfast on Christmas Day and there are cookies and various types of coffee and tea in the foyer all day. They really do match any price you find on the internet, so do a price-check here and call them - you won't be disappointed! The only negative experience I had was in hearing the neighbours too well - the walls seem to be quite thin. But the rest made up for this, and it didn't stop us from sleeping.

Tips for enjoying the Chancellor

I should have written this ages ago, but . . . we stayed at the Chancellor Hotel twice last year, and would definitely stay there again in the future. Wonderful service--the best of any hotel I can recall--as well as a great location and economical price. A few tips: 1) It may be my imagination, but the rooms facing Powell Street seem a bit larger than those on the "inside." And we didn't find them noisier, in spite of being over a busy street.
2) If you like to things on the spur of the moment, use the self-park option--the garage is very close--rather than valet parking: the valets have to park quite a distance away, and when traffic was heavy, they weren't able to get our car back to us immediately (I think they ask for 20 minutes' notice).
3) Pull/push your door shut completely, to make sure it latches (a good idea at any hotel).
4)Take advantage of the bathtub!
5) When strawberries are in season, go next door to Sear's Fine Foods for strawberry waffles.

This hotel was friendly and courteous! We checked in later then 3pm--got caught up shopping, first visit to San Fran--so the hotel called us to make sure we were still coming. Of course we were!! We arrived to check in, excellent location easy to find! Very welcoming staff. For July 4th, great rate included parking. The room was small with 2 twins, which I was aware when booking. Our room was along Powell Street a bit noisy, for the light sleeper. I am not, so no issue for me, plus it was 4th of July! But they did have a menu for pillows to select from! The motto is correct: the cable car literally stops at the door!! It was great!! When I return again to San Fran, I will be visiting the Chancellor.

Excellent Value for the Money

My first trip to San Fran with my husband...he chose the Chancellor and made an excellent choice. It has a location to die for...fantastic shopping, dining, attractions, just a short walk or catch the trolley right near the hotel entrance. Delicious homebaked cookies in the lobby, firm matteress, a large walk-in closet, and friendly helpful staff are a few outstanding features. Housekeeping found my 18K gold topaz pendant on the floor by my bed and left it on the TV for me! If you work out in the mornings, ask the front desk for your fee pass to the gym located at the Westin just down the street. Excellent value for the money.

I go to San Francisco often and this is my favorite place to stay. The combination of price, location and quality is hard to beat in the city.
The rooms are clean and has what looks like new double-pane windows to protect its occupants from those noisy and cool nights. Its located in the heart of Union Square, the cable car stops right in front of the hotel to take you to Fisherman's Wharf, and Chinatown is less than 5-minute walk. This is not a well-known hotel, but they deserve to be!
Love the complementary coffee, tea, apples, and fresh baked cookies in the lobby. Highly recommended! The only thing missing are rooms with two double beds for families!

Convenient hotel

I stayed here on a couple of weeks ago and opted for the parking package. It was an extremely wise move considering the parking charges nearby. The parking lot was about 200 yards (turn left from the hotel and then right onto Sutter Street by walking but for the car, it's left from Powell onto Post, first left again onto Stockton, first left onto Sutter and then on the right!) and it was great to drop the car and pick it up. The hotel was comfortable and despite facing Powell Street, did not hear too much noise. It is superbly located for Union Square and Market Street. Food-wise, there is a breakfast cafe next door called Sears Fine Foods which is opened from 7am-3pm but I think it is closed on Monday and Tuesday. Lori's Diner (one block from the left on Sutter/Powell, another branch is on Powell Street) is a 50s style diner, serving burgers, etc.Scala's Bistro is immediately opposite and serves Californian-Italian cuisine. You may to book on Friday and Saturday.Because of the location, you are no more than 10 minutes walk from the shops though take advantage of the tram to reach Fisherman's Wharf.

Great hotel for a very reasonable price in a great location. Clean rooms with lovely deep bath tub. Free coffee and biscuits in the lobby.
The staff were friendly and helpfull. What more could anyone ask for?

Top Local Tips for San Francisco

Getting around San Francisco Purchase a mult-day Muni Pass to use the Cable Cars, F-Line streetcars and bus system. It's also a good idea to get a Muni Map which shows all the routes.

Get a Muni card $18 for 3 days travel is great deal for getting around SF

Muni pass Definitely a must is getting and using the muni pass. 3 day pass is 18 $ and then all public transport is yours to use. Did an early morning tour of all Cable Car lines from end to end.... they start at 6:30 am I believe. What an unusual way to see a city! No crowds at all before 9 am.... Fisherman's wharf in the morning sun is very beautiful...
