Nice but inexpensive

I enjoyed my stay at the Carlton. It was a nice hotel at very reasonable rates. The staff were very attentive and gave great recommendations on places to go for food and sightseeing. The restaurant in the hotel was superb. I will definitely stay there again.

Very well refurbished, really nice staff but oh the noise!!

Just back from a 3 night stay here 9th - 13th October. On check in we were upgraded ( great we thought) but room 912 - avoid it at all costs unless you are using it as a connecting room with 911! I know all the details of the ladies who were staying there, in fact they were so clear I thought they were hiding in my bathroom!! They were speaking normally but every word was audible to us as we must have been to them. It was no problem to the staff to move us the next day to another room - 910 great - until the showers started the next morning, the hot water pipes ran through the room and obviously had an airlock in them which hummed every time someone turned on the water supply! Another problem which worried me was the habit of some guests of using the fire escape as a smoking area leaving it open at all times and as the room doors had at least a 1 inch gap all round, the smell of the smokers was very clear in the rooms. The gap also allowed the noise of early guests leaving in the morning (5am seemed a popular time!) to penetrate your sleep. For all that negativity it was a nice clean hotel but I am not sure I would stay there again.

My boyfriend and I stayed here during labor day weekend. It was a really great place. It was extremely clean and the rooms were very comfortable. The staff is very helpful and friendly. I definitely enjoyed my stay here! =)

Friendly knowledgeable and efficient staff They made my stay very special. the Hotel Carlton has just been renovated and it was a real pleasure to stay there.

I was there 5 days ago and spend 3 nights. The hotel Carlton is a good place to stay: very nice decoration in the lobby and in the room, VERY VERY CLEAN , good location (bus stops near the hotel), I didn't taste the food of the hotel but it looked very nice (very good smell ). The only bad point was the noise: we could hear very well our neighbours and the noise of the corridor. Maybe it is better to ask for a room in a corner!

Great Place to stay in SF

The staff at the Carlton is great. The brochure says they love SF and based on talking with the personnel at the front desk, they are right. From Theo's knowledge about "Fina Estampa" for great Peruvian cuisine to Margaret's quick set up of a wine country tour, we felt we were well taken care of. SF is great and the crew at the front desk of Hotel Carlton makes it even better. Thanks guys.

Great place for holidays

We stayed here for 4 nights with two daughters (22 and 14). Very nice, clean and comfortable rooms, bathrooms etc. Close to Union Square and good breakfast restaurants.
Nice and helpful employees; many of them are multi langual. I have heard them speaking english, spanish, german and french.
We would certainly come back to this hotel.

My 16 yr. old son and I just returned from a 2 night stay at the Carlton. It has been totally refurbished and is a delight. I'd stay there again anytime. I have a feeling they'll be getting their stars back soon. Stay before the price goes up! We loved it.

What a pleasure

After a terrible experience at another San Francisco hotel, we moved to the Carlton. It was like stepping into another world. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The valet parking was quick. They ask you to call 5 mins. before you need it because of all the one way streets. The newly renovated rooms have a southern cabana feel to them. Ceiling fans and beautiful duvets. What a treat. The bathroom was spotless and the cleaning staff was very thorough. The noise is a problem everywhere in the downtown area, but at least the windows are thermal with double pane glass. This helps a lot. You are only 3 blocks away from the California cable car line. This hotel made our San Francisco experience a happy one. I would stay here again in a heartbeat!

A no-frills hotel

Carlton Hotel, 1075 Sutter St., San Francisco CA

If you don’t mind a no-frills hotel, there’s always the Carlton. Rooms are tiny, but they’re clean and the beds are decent.

My wife and I stayed at the Carlton in June 2004, in a room on the top (9th) floor. After considerable homework, we settled on the Carlton as a not-too-expensive-but-not-too-cheap, centrally located alternative to the $300-$400 fancy hotels.

Our room rate at the Carlton was $127.45 plus $20 a night to park the car (all before taxes). I guess you can’t expect the world in San Francisco for a “mere” $147.45 a night, but in most cities, our room would have gone for more like $49.95 a night. And that’s what it really was worth.

The hotel is in an extremely noisy and not very nice neighborhood. Without earplugs, it would have been impossible for us to sleep, even with the windows shut. Sirens all night long, and you could hear traffic and people talking and shouting in the streets below.

The Carlton advertises being “only blocks from Union Square,” but when you come down to it, it’s a 10-block walk – about half a mile. And through a really lousy section of the city; not for the faint of heart.

Also, I definitely wouldn’t stay at the Carlton if I had little kids. The window ledges in our room were about 24 inches off the floor, and with no screens or guards over the windows, kids could fall out pretty easily.

Furniture consisted of one chair and a chest of drawers straight from Goodwill. The bathroom, which was decent, lacked any shelving at all. Our TV was an old 19-incher, which didn’t bother us, but the remote didn’t work, and there were only 14 channels, mostly those we never watch.

So would I recommend the Carlton? Not really, but I suspect you won’t do much better in that price range. There are cheaper hotels in the Carlton’s neighborhood, and I can only imagine what they’re like.

Fantastic

We were lucky enough to stay at this hotel for a few nights at the end of May 2004. We were concerned that the renovation would not have been completed but we need not have worried. This hotel was outstanding. The reception / lobby was lovely - big comfy but smart chairs and settees, outstanding artwork and collectables. The rooms were not massive but bigger than most hotels in cities. The rooms were again very well decarated and laid out. The staff could not have been more friendly and helpful. It was a true delight to stop here and if I get the chance to go back to San Francisco this hotel would be my first choice.

Top Local Tips for San Francisco

Don't move your car when sightseeing Parking is expensive and traffic is bad - we found it much easier to leave the car at the hotel and walk. We also took BART and a cable car, and then eventually hired a taxi to take us back to the hotel to collect our car.

The Holy Grail Bar and Grill - Van Ness This bar and restaurant is quite unassuming - looks like any other Celtic bar - but has great food a la carte style. Its on Van Ness and Sutter.

Parking Parking is expensive. Just make sure you budget for this. Everywhere downtown you have to pay for parking. Even if you park at a meter, the maximum you can put in the meter is 1 hour worth of change, so, you have to keep putting change in the meter if you plan to park for more than an hour.
