Rude staff and very basic room!

Hotel (rather a motel) run people who are aloof to customers. Hotel right next to Chinatown (which is dirty and totally disappointing). Very expensive parking located a few blocks away from the hotel and only 2 parking lots in front of the hotel for loading/unloading luggage. Very small and basic room. Horrible and smelly lift. Breakfast times not clearly indicated so make sure you check! Totally not recommended for anyone!

I really enjoyed my staying at the Astoria in San Francisco.
The location is great and the rooms are clean. The rates are very good for what you get back.

Wouldn't recommend wasting money here

Bit dodgy. Had a room on the 5th floor. Room key didn't work first, eventually got a new key that did work. Deadlock on door didn't work and lock was pretty crappy - room would have been very easy to break into. No safe available for valuables. Customer service abysmal. Staff very unfriendly, didn't want to help. Could hardly speak English. Not a very pleasant welcome for day 1 in the states.

Adjacent to China gate and walking distance to public transport this is a good value hotel well located. Rooms well furnished and clean.

Unbeatable price. Comfortable rooms. Great location. Convenient to public transportation and in walking distance to China Town. Very pleasant staff. Will stay there again.

Top Local Tips for San Francisco

Good food @ chinatown Some people like to splurge on gourmet restaurant. Me - I skipped them and buy take out @ Chinatown from Chinese deli or eat at a neighborhood restaurant. There are numerous in Stockton, the one that I go to is Gourmet Delight. Half a pound of roast pork and half a pound of fried jumbo shrimp for $9! High Lung also @ Stockton has traditional Chinese porridge, served in 17 varieties for $4.5 per bowl and it is a large bowl! Golden Gate bakery @ Grant has great chicken curry pie for $1 and black bean moon cake for $4. Trust me, eating @ the neighborhood places beat PF Chang anyday!

San Francisco - who needs a car? On my recent trip to San Francisco, I did not rent a car - I used public transportation. The Bart was a fast way to get from the airport to downtown (and back out at the end of the trip), at the rate of $5.15 each way. Travel within San Francisco was on the Muni - purchase a 1-3 or 7 day pass - which covers all rides on the cable cars, busses or street cars in the Muni system. San Francisco is a confusing place to drive (did that once before), with horridly expensive parking rates - it just doesn't make sense to pay $20/day give or take to park a car that I am paying $20/day to rent... There is a number that can be called for bus information - I did use it once - 415-673-6864, give the helpful person who answers your location and destination, and they will direct you to the transit stop that will get you where you want to go, and will tell you when the next bus is due to arrive - program the number into your phone. Also - purchase hte transit map for $3 - it is worth it's weight in gold

Sushi heaven San Francisco is the mecca of good sushi--definitely make your way to Japantown for a variety of restaurants at different price levels, or if staying at hotel Astoria, take a walk over to Van Ness, and down a few blocks to Hemlock Street for Kyoto Sushi (blue awning). By far the best sushi and great service, good sake collection, nice atmosphere!
