...better than all the rest

Fortunate enough to stay in some of the worlds leading hotels, the stay at the Pheonix compelled me to write. My vocabulary could never do justice to describing our stay at the Argonaut.The position fantastic, the rooms are simply the best and the service is without fault.You were never really conscious of any of the staffs presence, but as if they owned telepathic powers, they were there when you "thought" you needed something. From the moment you draw up outside the exempelary service and attention to detail begins, nothing is too much trouble , in this tranquil yet understated oppulence.The desk staff are fantastic and if the best could get better, it did.Laura the concierge arranged everything , from hair salons to dining experiences that were beyond belief, just like having a resident PA.

My husband and I fell in love with the Argonaut and the City of San Francisco! The accomodations were wonderful and the staff was extremely helpful!

Wow...I love this suite. Talk about a view. I saw the Aquadic Park and the Golden Gate bridge from one room and Alcatraz from the next. It's a mistake to stay anywhere else.

We spent weekend after Thanksgiving at the Argonaut and I have to say it was flawless. I think it was the best bed I have ever slept in and I was told by the manager it is a custom made mattress for the Kimpton Hotels. Amazing! Starbucks coffee in our room too! It felt like the true San Francisco and we kept warm by the fire in the lobby. This place is way cool.

New and fresh

Great location, everything is so clean and fresh. Bedding is soft, down pillows. Lobby is very inviting with a large fireplace. Downside : The free coffee in the AM and wine in the PM was a nice touch. Too bad they cancelled it in the middle of our stay. Maid service could be a little more attentive to detail. We will definitely stay again.

Fantastic Hotel

Stayed at the Argonaut Hotel for two nights (27 and 28 September).

The hotel was excellent, staff friendly and helpful, the rooms perfectly decorated with the nautical theme throughout. The little extras made the rooms very comfortable (throws, star pillows etc).

We were lucky to get a good deal through Expedia, as we booked several months before the hotel opened ($110 per night).

We ate at the Blue Mermaid on the first evening and thought the food was excellent.

The only downside was the lack of a view from our inside room, however we did not spend too much time in our room as we were out sightseeing most of the time

We just returned from a five night stay at the Argonaut (our first visit to San Francisco) and absolutely loved the hotel and the city.
The hotel is located at Fisherman's Warf, directly across from the Hyde Street Pier and adjacent to the National Maritime Historic Park. The location is great -- you can walk to Pier 39 in less than 10 minutes, the cable car turnaround is one block behind the hotel, and Ghirardelli Square is about two blocks away. The hotel is new and very nice with a nautical theme throughout. The rooms are large with high ceilings (we were on the fourth floor) and great views of the Bay/Golden Gate Bridge/Alcatraz from the rooms on the front and west sides of the hotel. The staff was very friendly and helpful and responded quickly to all of our requests. We will definitely go back to San Francisco and the Argonaut.

Perfect location for us

If you like nautical, the Argonaut is for you. The decor is fun and funky, the Maritime National Historical Park visitors center is off the lobby and the ships at Hyde St. Pier are across the street (you can tour several of them for a few $$). While I might not have normally chosen a Fishermans Wharf hotel for our stay, I felt this location was special. My husband and I loved it. The cable car turnaround is conveniently around the corner. From it, you can hop off to walk down crooked Lombard St., or visit the Cable Car Museum.Upon seeing the Golden Gate Bridge view room we had requested, we found the view of the bridge partially obscured by trees across the street. Also, my husband was concerned about traffic noise from vehicles accelerating up the hill, although this may not have been an issue at night. We switched to an Alcatraz view room (446) instead where the view was much more expansive, the room seemed brighter, and the square-rigged Balcutha was right out our window. Fabulous! The rooms we saw had either two queen-sized beds or one king and a couch. Both were clean and spacious with wallpapered and brick walls. The cooling/heating system in our room worked well and we found it very easy to control the temperature.We were told the inside rooms were quite small but, small or not, they have no view at all as they face a dismal-looking light well. The suites though, from what I saw from the hallway, must be quite large.Problems were minor. There was a bit of confusion with communication. Yes, you can definitely have a top floor, Golden Gate Bridge view room, to, No, we cant guarantee that. And, Yes, certainly you can have a late check out, to, No, we need that room to set up for an event. Ill bet I know exactly which doorman the TripAdvisor user from LA is talking about. He was the only employee we thought they could do without. Otherwise, the staff was bright, friendly and seemed bent on making our stay a pleasant one. Concierge staff was good too.If I were to stay again I would ask for bathrobes upon arrival since they weren't in our room. The heavy black and brown leopard spotted robes were comically out of place in a nautical themed environment.We found the food at the attached Blue Mermaid Chowder House to be so-so. Ghirardelli Square with McCormick and Kuleto's Restaurant and Loris Diner is a short walk away and they have similar terrific views as from the front of the Argonaut.Overall we had a delightful experience at the Argonaut and we would definitely stay there again.

We are not regular 5 Star hotel inhabitants, but we decided to splurge and spend a night at the Argonaut on a recent trip (Sept 2003) thru CA.
The Hotel was a dream, the staff was friendly and helpful, the location is convenient to everything, and the 5PM wine tasting (Free) was excellent!! We ended up staying 2 nights from our room overlooking the Golden Gate.. I would Highly recommend this Hotel to anyone planning a trip to the S.F. area - my only complaint was the $32.00 a night Valet parking fee (Optional)..

Top Local Tips for San Francisco

Rent a GOCar You absolutely must rent a GOCar for a day. The little two-seater cars have speaking navigation that not only tells you where to go but also gives you facts and information about what you're seeing. We had a blast riding around in this thing. You can take it most places except for steep hills and the Golden Gate Bridge-save that for walking or the rental car. It's also small enough to navigate into virtually any parking space. People were laughing & taking pics of us everywhere we went and it was the highlight of our trip. (TIP: You may want to bring a cushion to sit on...or take breaks every hour. Gets a little bumpy!)

Free parking for Hybrid Cars at the Argonaut Hotel! Although it's $40+ per day to park your car through the hotel valet, it's FREE if you're driving a Hybrid!

Driving and Parking Parking at hotels is expensive, wouldn't advise driving in SF unless you're used to driving in US cities as it's made 3 times worse by the steep roads. If you're flying into SF leave the hire car until you leave and use public transport or taxis. Queues for the trolleys can be horrendous at busy times so take some good walking shoes. Whichever way you travel be prepared to pay unless you get the public buses but don't let this put you off. It's a great city!!
