Historical Traveller Reviews of Westin San Diego Hotel

Modern, good position

from possumpal
We stayed at the Westin San Deigo for two nights before our cruise.
It was a choice between the Sofia or the Westin but the Sofia could only offer us a Queen size bed not a King.
The Westin is very modern and well situated, close to Gaslamp, the trolley and the cruise terminal.
The only complaint we had were not enough lamps in the room. None on the desk and only one lamp (and bedside table !!!) by the King size bed. My husband stays in Westin hotels a lot (about 5 months a year) and though we found the room very large, clean heaps of towels, toiletries etc this was an annoyance. Also there was a robobar sitting in front of the full length mirror as an afterthought. A normal mini bar is much preferred as you can use the fridge if necessary plus the room had a cabinet built in for one.
The Westin San Diego while a nice place to stay is really just another piece of a large hotel chain.

The perfect stay, Westin San Diego

from mmvend2002
My husband and I celebrated our anniv. in San Diego. We had starwood points to use so we read reviews of all 10 properties in the San Diego area which included Westin, W, Sheratons. .and decided on the Westin San Diego. Great choice! With this location we didn't need a car which was a nice break. The bus/trolley/train station is less than a block away. They have an airport shuttle. Every employee we encountered displayed "above and beyond" service, ranging from bell captain, to the front desk staff, to housekeeping. My husband liked the equipment in the workout room, and we even did some pool time. We had a beautiful room with a king bed and outstanding view of the bay and city.Location for food was exceptional. It is right between gaslamp and Little Italy , and waterfront. Didn't eat at the hotel, there was just too much to offer for a short walk. We will definately stay here again.

My husband and I traveled to San Diego on business but decided to stay on a few extra days to enjoy the city and weather. As others have previously mentioned, this hotel is in the perfect location to get around and the trolley and train station is just a few blocks away. It is not a resort, like some might expect every hotel in San Diego to be, but is definetly one of the most comfortable and welcoming hotels in the city. We visited a few other hotels while walking around and were happy we chose to stay at the Westin.

We found every staff member to be courteous and helpful, especially the concierge who was always willing to direct us to the best restaurants and shops..

The hotel apparently just underwent a complete renovation earlier this year, so everything was brand new, which was great.

This hotel was really tremendous. I would highly recommend it to anyone travelling to San Diego on business or for pleasure.

Good Base for Exploring San Diego

from longislandny07
Stayed here 4 nights with my husband for the purpose of visiting the San Diego Zoo, Balboa Park and football game. The Westin San Diego is perfect for someone who just needs a place to sleep at the end of the day. If you are looking for a resort, stay somewhere else.

Room was clean but smelled slightly like cleaning products the first day but okay after that.

We had a bay view room but couldn't see the bay b/c windows were very filthy. Tall buildings blocked most of the view anyway.

Breakfast at the hotel restaurant was below average.

Good location. Easy walk to Seaport Village. Short walk to trolley station. Very convenient for getting directly into Qualcomm Stadium. Zoo/Park is a long walk. I would recommend a taxi for the zoo/park (approx. $10.00 each way) or taking the trolley to City College and walking 15 mins. to the tram in the park.

Stay Away

I traveled on business to San Diego and chose this hotel for it's location to the conference I was attending, as well as the Westin reputation. The hotel is older and isn't being kept up well. The staff was pretty rude when I tried to send a package back to my office in MD and imagine my shock when it didn't make it back to my office for almost 2 weeks, even though it was supposed to be FedEx overnight. Due to a timing issue, I ate in the hotel restaurant one night. Big mistake. It was overpriced with food that just didn't live up to the cost of the meal. My meals at better places in the Gaslamp district were cheaper and better than here.

Heavenly Stay!

We loved all the special attention !!

from LWms
My husband and I stayed at the Westin San Diego for two nights to celebrate our 21st wedding anniversary and we loved all the special attention the hotel staff gave us. The hotel staff were wonderful, friendly and very helpful. They upgraded our room from a regular room to a King, with a bay view. They also sent up a platter of strawberries with brown sugar and chocolate for dipping, compliments of the hotel. Also, they left a card, signed by the staff, wishing us a happy anniversary. My husband and I watched the fireworks over at Sea World, from our room. The staff was very attentive, getting us newspapers, a sewing kit, etc., whatever we needed, they supplied. We were treated like their favorite guests !!
The flavored water in the lobby was also so wonderful. Every time we walked in or out of the hotel, we would stop for a glass of water. Every flavor; strawberry, lemon, orange, honeydew and cantelope, was delicious. Fresh fruit cut up, in glass dispensers, filled often with water and ice, for a subtle, yet flavorful treat.
The restaurant was fabulous, the breakfast buffet was sumptuous ! Again, staffed with wonderful, friendly, helpful people. A chef was there to personally make your waffles or omelets to your order, while you watched !! Oh, the strawberries and cream waffle was delicious, just like everything else, which was just about everything you could imagine, in a breakfast buffet.
I was OK with the parking, since there was no other alternative, except to leave the car parked on the street, which I would not do. The parking staff were quick and extremely courteous. They even flagged down a taxi for us when we needed one, they even offered to drive us to our destination, so that we wouldn't have to drive ourselves !!
We would gladly stay there again and again and refer friends and family (and everyone else!) to the Westin, whenever staying in San Diego !!

The Westin saved our vacation!

from CanadaJaybee
We were on a family vacation in San Diego from August 19-25. Initially we were staying at the Lafayette, but quickly decided we had to change hotels. We chose the Westin downtown and it was perfect! The bell captain, Ethan Fitzgerald, was wonderful from the moment we wandered in from the street asking if we could look at a room, until we boarded the airport shuttle to head home. The desk clerk was also great, but unfortunately I did not get her name. She was a trainee, and she was the best - if she reads this, I hope she knows who she is!

I won't bore you with the details of all the things I loved about the Westin. They saved our vacation after a very disappointing start at the Lafayette, and I would not hesitate to go back.

Hard to recommend

from CB90292
Booked one night at this property about 6 weeks prior to staying there, via the hotel's website. We prepaid for a deluxe bay view room. When we arrived at the hotel, we were told that :
1. there were no bay view rooms available
2. there were NO ROOMS available
After standing at the check in for almost a 1/2 hr, we were finally given a room.
When we got to the room, the first thing that we encountered was an overpowering smell of too much cleaning product. Plus the room was the size of a broom closet, with an obstructed path between the beds and the bathroom. Called to say the room was unacceptable and amazingly, another room was available.
Moved to that room, which was much better, but it was obvious that someone had already been in the room as the bedspread was rumpled and the a.c. was shut off. Very strange...
As for the "heavenly beds" - they look nice, but the sheets are of very low quality, and scratchy. As for the "heavenly bath", nice tub, great shower, but the bath products are "no name" and minimal (no bath gel, for example).
Nice flat screen t.v., though difficult to change the channels for some reason.
We were never offered a key to the mini bar.
And lastly - there were two long, black hairs in the tub prior to anyone using it. ..

Decent Hotel, but Lousy Staff

from BurbankAV
Stayed at the Westin SD for a week on business. Lots of minor things:
I was asked if I wanted a key to the minibar. I declined, but was given one anyway. Why ask? My coworkers all reported exactly the same thing.
Nice matching furniture in the room, and then a really tacky-looking minibar set into a prominent location that I kept walking into (and had to lift my suitcase over to get past!)
Midway through my stay, housekeeping rearranged the minibar -- changing what was visible in the little front window. Admittedly, Westin-branded whatevers are better looking than Cheez-its, but I felt the need to check my folio to make sure I wasn't being scammed.
Housekeeping will not take away used bottles of shampoo/conditioner/etc. Am I supposed to throw them away?
As I said, all of this is minor, and wouldn't merit such a low review if not for the following:
The first morning I was there, the alarm clock in the room woke me at 6am (really loud Mexican music.) I figured it was my fault -- I hadn't checked the clock. So I switched off the alarm and went about my day. Morning two, the alarm goes off at 6am. Clearly housekeeping set the alarm again. After I complained to the front desk, they said they'd "look into it." When I came back at the end of the day, I had a message letting me know that they'd replaced the alarm clock (!!!) Of course, I checked, and the alarm was set on this one, too. At this point, I was angry and frustrated (housekeeping has an alarm clock fetish?) so I went back to the front desk, and they couldn't figure out how the alarm clock might possibly be resetting itself.... The only resolution they could think of was to take the alarm clock away entirely. Fine, whatever. It's a good thing I carry a small travel alarm clock with me...

Overall, I really can't recommend this hotel. It's okay, but there are so many other choices that won’t make you crazy, that you should just avoid this place.

WOW! There is SO much to do in this city. You'll want to rent a car, but it's worth it once you see how much there is to do. You won't want to leave. I hear the weather is great all year round.
