Stayed here on business for 6 days and it is superb. In the true style of a boutique hotel, the staff are informally but smartly dressed and treat you courteously all the time. The rooms are fabulous, well appointed with designer touches. The roof top bar is lovely, with a sandy floor and big comfy chairs. The hotel is well placed for the city centre - it is expensive but worth it for a treat.I would definitely go back.

Love the Sandy Bar

from cchill
Yes, it's a little snobby for our tastes, but we had a great stay at the W. We spent 2 nights there in October 2003. Everything is blue, white, glass, and metalic - a very cool and relaxing design. The window seats are a nice touch. The beds are fantastic. However, the best part had to be the rooftop bar, with sand bottom, torches, and queen sized lounge areas with curtains. Even on a cloudy, cool night it was romantic and fun. The pool and workout area were nice too.

Wonderful!

We stayed at the W San Diego for three nights in November '03 and just loved it. The rooms, while not huge, were perfectly acceptable for a boutique style hotel. The beachy look and feel was a great match to the city. The staff were very friendly and the concierge gave great advice.
We loved the Whatever/Whenever service. The lobby, or "living room" was comfortable and the drinks were excellent, the hotel, which allows dogs, even let us sit with our dogs in the lobby and enjoy a cocktail.
We had dinner one evening at Rice, and thought it was wonderful as well - yummy food, great atmosphere and fantastic service. If you like the W hotel chain, you won't be disappointed.

Loved the Decor!

We were upgraded to a corner room so we had no issue with space -- the room was large with windows all around, a cute window seat and very cool furniture. The bathroom was also spacious with a great tub and high end bath accessories and soaps. We loved the color in the room and found all of the bedding and furniture very inspiring (we wanted to buy all of it for our own apartment!). The staff at the hotel were EXTREMELY friendly and very, very responsive to any of our questions -- where to eat, where to go out dancing, running trails, etc. The best service we've ever had. Overall, we highly recommend the W for people looking for something fun, different and modern.

the only downsides include lukewarm/cold water from our shower (no problems with the bath though) and housekeeping came rather late in the day to clean our room.

Great for a night

Stayed on a whim when we couldn't find an reasonably priced hotel in LaJolla. Awesome friendly staff, esp the concierge. Thought room service was only alright but everything else was great. Had a fun night in San Diego, concierge sent up everything we wanted. Had a fine breakfast in the restaurant downstairs.

Friendly staff!

Just returned from W San Diego. Arrived to the hotel at 10:00 am. Had a room ready for us within 20 minutes. We were shown to our room and the hotel staff couldn't have been friendlier. Anything you have a request for, the staff is more than happy to accomodate! The room was a bit small, we were on the 18th floor in a room with 2 beds. Didn't dine in the restaurants, but ordered appetizers at the Beach Bar and room service for breakfast. The food was good, and the service excellent.
Overall, we had a great experience and would stay there again!

AWESOME, AWESOME HOTEL!

...a friendly, young, hip and HOT staff! The decor is incredible! I've been to many other four star hotels and this is by far the best!

Comfortable and funky

from A TripAdvisor Member
The hotel is new and the rooms are really large. Some reviewers had suggested that the rooms are small, and this is really off the mark.
Furthermore, white furniture and walls give the sense of even more space. The bathrooms are really wonderful - excellent water pressure, incredibly nice sink and plenty of towels, as well as plush robes.
Hotel has a complimentary gym, which is not large, but includes around 6 cardio machines (2 ellipticals, treadmills, bikes), a range of freewieghts and matts. Also, has an adjoining pool. The restaurant Rice is excellent. It is not overpriced, especially in comparison to the downtown's other venues. The service strives to provide one with a "W experience", although might still benefit from some polishing. On offer there is also a CD and DVD library. No complimentary web access however. You will be asked to pay extra should you wish to check your email on a computer located in a lounge. By and large, a really nice hotel.

Overrated!

from A TripAdvisor Member
First of all , when we arrived the hotel had no parking. They offer $ 26.00 to park your car per day. Pretty steep considering its over $ 200.00 a night to stay there. The pool, if you can call it a pool is about the size of two VW's. It has no Jaccuzzi. The rooms very small. The plasma tv screens at the bar were nowhere to be found. The one plus at the hotel was it was very clean. Other than that for your money it WAS'NT worth it.

Great overall experience

Rooms are smaller than your typical W, but space is adequate and the bed is ultra comfortable. The staff is extremely friendly and energetic; in fact, I cannot recall a north american hotel with a staff that is more enthusiastic.

Quaint and fun place

from A TripAdvisor Member
Though it took me an absurd 3 1/2 hours to get from Los Angeles to the W Hotel in San Diego, it was worth the drive. The staff here are amazingly friendly without the attitude. Also, they welcome pets and that is certainly an added bonus in this day and age. The place is clean, albeit smaller than most other W rooms. The food was solid too.
The only improvement that I can think of would be swifter housekeeping.
It took the staff until 5 pm to clean our rooms. But I would rather compromise in this area than suffer from bad food and sour staff members!

Top Local Tips for San Diego

Where we ate outside hotel Enjoyed the Fritto Misto at Stingaree. YUM. and Cafe Sevilla was loads of fun. GREAT Sangria and tapas. Both had music...live at the latter.

Trattoria Fantastica in Little italy Great italian cafe in little Italy, which is walkable from the 'W'. Delicious food, good prices, obviously popular with locals too.

Weather Apprenlty this not a great time of year weather wise. We had mostly cloudy, gray skies the entire weekend and a bit chilly.
