Totally overpriced

from A TripAdvisor Member
I also attended a convention at the T&C. The convention facilities and gardens were pretty, but as a hotel this was truly average if not disappointing. What a maze! It took me a couple of days to learn where my room was - I continuously got lost because the layout was so sprawling and confusing. The room itself was clean, a bit faded, facing a motel-like alleyway. No extras. I don't think I even had a bar or a fridge. My coffeemaker was full of disgusting red algae. Yuck!!!!!

Some of the staff were truly friendly cute surfer boys though. There were some nice gazebos in the garden. And you could escape it all by walking to the Fashion Mall and its trolley station - handy for guests without a rental car. The nearby Handlery seemed to offer a slightly shabbier choice but more friendly and personal service, at half the price. So if you have a convention at the T&C, strongly consider the neighboring hotel options. I ended up here because everything else was sold out.

Gardens nice but rooms small!

My family just got back from a stay at the T & C Resort. The grounds were absolutely beautiful! The gardens were well kept and lush. The rooms on the other hand were very small as was the bathroom but we didn't spend much time in the room. Our main complaint was the fee for parking. Ten dollars a day! Plus everytime you came into the hotel to park you had to get a ticket from the booth so the arm would go up. Then when you wanted to leave you had to wait in a line of cars (10 deep one time) to get out of the place. You had to stop, give them your ticket, room number and name so they could let you out! Alot of people complained about it. Overall, our stay was a nice one but I don't know if I would stay again.

Better than reviews would lead to believe

I stayed a week at the T&C during the last week of July and I admit I was a little nervous after reading most of the reviews here. What I found didn't match up with what some of the other reviewers found. I stayed in the Tower on the 10th floor and found the room to be clean and not as old appearing as might be expected. The bed and pillows were comfortable; the only gripe I have is the was smaller than I am used to in a hotel and there was not any HBO type channels. The food was very good, although a little pricey, but remember, this is CA. Overall, I gave my stay an above average. The front desk person (a trainee woman who's name I can't remember) was very quick and helpful. I'd go back again.

Amazing Place,Pools and Gardens

Beautiful property,3 great pools and abundant gardens.Stay in 2 level poolside/garden area.Stayed 6 wonderful nights there. Make sure to ask about drop off and pickup at nights...saved us alot of money on cabs!!

Beware the smell.....

I had to take a room at this hotel because of a last minute business trip to SD, and everything else was booked for a big convention. The rate was reasonable at $139 a night, but i really wan't prepared for a 50 year old resort, that apparently hasn't been updated.... ever. There were some nice things about it, like the location, the spa, the employees, and the absolutely gorgeous and lush flowers and trees on the grounds. I can't say enough about that, but everything else was more than disapointing. The first thing, was the smell in the hallway to my room (which was on a second floor and there was no elevator for pregnant me aand my heavy bag). It was an overall sense of mustiness and age, which carried on into the room. Larger than some rooms I've stayed in, but just really bad decor, hard bed, scratchy linens, tiny bathroom, and just kind of dingy and dirty. The food in the restaurants was seriously overpriced and very poor quality. And it's true, they do nickel and dime badly. I was charged a dollar for every 800 call I made with my calling card, plus they did charge for local calls, as well as a daily "energy surcharge", which varied by the day. Also Parking was ridiculous at $10 per day. I will not stay there again, though I might walk my husband around the ground someday to look at the flowers.

The T&C has many positive things going for it. It is a beautifully landscaped property. The grounds are impeccably maintained and the atmosphere is relaxing. It is a great place to stay with kids. Multiple pools, plenty of casual dining, etc. I like a good value, and I find it at the T&C. The rooms do show their age, but mine was very clean which is all I care about. If you are expecting the Ritz-Carlton, you will be disappointed. Otherwise, you should have no problems. Also, they do have a golf course. Hey, at the time the T&C was built, it was THE premier resort in the area. Finally, location - location - location. The T&C has the best location on Hotel Circle. We were in town to see my Cubs play the Padres. The Trolley station is directly behind the property, so you can get anywhere downtown, (Seaport Village, Petco Park, the Gaslamp). It is also a short drive from the Zoo and Seaworld. Our car never left the T&C parking lot.If you have reasonable expectations, the T&C will probably exceed them. It is a very nice place to stay and relax while in San Diego.

Not worth the dough!

I just returned from a conference which was held at the Town and Country resort. I can not recommend this a good place to stay, especially for the $185 a night. It wasn't worth of that! I've traveled quite a bit and while this wasn't the worst room I've every had, it came pretty close. This place delivers too little for what you pay.The rooms are in poor condition: the bathroom door wouldn't close because it had been repainted so many times, the shower head was chest high, and the carpet was heavily stained. This place must have been a nice place sometime in the 50's.Do not stay here! Everywhere in san Diego is fairly close by driving 15-20 minutes. I recommend that you find nice place on the beach for that price and enjoy.

Good for families, but just okay for couples.

We stayed at the Town and Country this last weekend, which was a very busy summer weekend and the hotel was full. Several conventions were going on and the hotel was full up with families. The first night we stayed in the Palm Court Tower, which was very noisy and we could hear what the people next door were saying because of the adjoining door.
The room itself was on the shabby side, with stained wallpaper and the bed was very hard. My husband and I both had trouble sleeping and were awakened early by the family in the next room. We could also hear the elevator, which was next to our room. I called the front desk and asked for a change of rooms. They were very helpful and polite. The next night we stayed in a much smaller, but much more comfortable, remodeled room. I have to say that all of the staff in the hotel, restaurants and the concierge desk, were very helpful and polite. Also, the Trolley is located just behind the hotel, which was very convenient. I would advise you to stay in the Palm Court Tower if you have a family, which awakens early, and you want extra room. Those rooms are large, with a small fridge, extra sink, table and couch. For couples who want privacy and comfort, you would be better off in the courtyard rooms. I would stay here again, but only in the off season, but my husband said he would not, because the price was too high for a below average room.

It stinks. Literally!

Stay somewhere else. We found the convention rate pricey for what we got. The first hint was the non-refundable deposit. The front desk was snooty. We had to hold our noses in the hallway. The room was old and shabby. The shower was broken. The pool was ice cold. We asked for an extra pillow but never got one. The view from the Regency tower was of the dumpsters. They nickle and dime you for everything. Parking was $10/day. Local phone calls $1/minute. Faxes were $10/page! I paid $8 for a hot dog by the pool. The food is cheaper at the mall accross the street. They did not have a guest laundry and told us to go to the Best Western. We wish we took our luggage and stayed there instead!

Someone should have put a match to this place years ago!

Although the grounds are quite lovely and there is beautiful flora throughout the maze of lanes, the place basically looks like a senior retirement center in Florida. The two-floor units are like huts. There are many winding roads, and the place is not good for conferences. I attended a conference there in May, and the facilities were not ready for over 1500 people. After refusing a horrible room, I was placed in one of the "high-rise, low class" towers. The room was lovely, with a balcony, but it took an hour to get one bucket of ice, and at night the place was open to predators from the local train station. The gift shops close too early, and I needed a mini-fridge for my medications, but never received one. The staff were OK, although the one concierge must have flunked concierge school. This place should be called the "Town and Shanty". Many of my colleagues agree. I would rather spend my time at the Lawrence Welk Museum than to set foot in that place again.
