BEAUTIFUL, ELEGANT HOTEL

from sheilajgw
My husband and I stayed at the Westgate in early February for the ABA Tax Conference -- we were late in making reservations at the Hyatt, where the conference was held, and we were referred to the Westgate.

We had a wonderful stay there --beautiful, elegant, private, quiet and peaceful. We had a standard room which was the size of a jr. suite in many hotels. The room was freshly decorated and very comfortable -- the bath/shower combination was slightly small.

Only problem was with room service -- they seem to need more help -- on at leaset two occasions there was no answer, and the front desk had them call me back...

Otherwise, the staff was very helpful, friendly - no complaints whatsoever. The gym is small but adequate, and very clean. They have a lovely high tea every day, which we didn't have a chance to take advantage of -- but it looked and sounded beautiful.

Also -- the hotel isconvenient to shopping -- 1 block away from the shopping mall -- and in the center of the restaurant/bar/antique shopping area in downtown San Diego.

Very nice expereince -- we would definitely stay here again.

LOVED the Westgate...WOW and more WOW!!!!

This is a GREAT hotel. Location is great, food was FABULOUS (Seafood buffet is a MUST), staff was very nice and helpful, beautiful room, and what else? EVERYTHING. We were very impressed and very pleased with our stay. Please just ask, because they will respond if you have any questions or need anything.

Ice Cold Reception

from hildaToronto
I stayed with my partner of 13 years, 3 nights before boarding for a cruise. I researched it carefully and thought I had chosen something special. The reception staff were the coldest, most unfriendly people I have ever encountered at any hotel during my travels. Ice cold.
Never a friendly smile and forget any extras like a free paper or a cup of coffee in the room or lobby. Imagine leaving a card saying you will be charged for the newspaper. Or an extra $20.00/night charge for your partner to be staying with you ... Dont forget the plugged sink on arrival and a bed not turned down the second night.
This hotel will try to convince you that you are a special guest by giving you all the names and stars they say have stayed in the hotel. They even post a list in the binder found in your room.
Please re consider your visit to this hotel...you can do so much better just blocks away and will be greeted with a smile and some genuine hospitality.
Very disappointed.

Fantasic location

from Deb70
1st October 2005, 4 nights.
Were collected from airport by courtesy shuttle. Service was excellent very professional, all staff we very helpful and nothing was ever too much bother. Our room was not ready and was offered a free drink while we waited. We choose to leave our bags in secure location while went out.
We were upgraded to a Ocean view room on arrival from a park city view room. The rooms are large with lovely furniture. The bathroom was good size with plenty of towels and bath robes to wear if wanted.
This hotel is centrally located with the tram and bus stop around the corner. 1 block away from the Horton Plaza which has plenty of eating places and also picture threatre. Also is walking distance from Gaslamp district with plenty of restaurants and entertainment.
Hotel only offers laundry service, but with traveliing for a few days needed to do some washing and of which we located a laundrymat 4th Ave.
They have a courtesy shuttle to Seaworld and the Zoo which is very handy and they are there to collect you when they say as you are not waiting. Always prompt and efficient.

Elegant Westgate

from beacho
The Westgate hotel is great! This gem will by my new weekend getaway location in San Diego now that Prava is closed. The service is excellent. We turned down their offer Friday night of the Le Fontainebleau seafood soiree. (Mistake!) The Sunday brunch was incredible. I strongly recommend this hotel.

overrated

my girlfriend and i stayed for a weekend. we were looking for a historic hotel or something upscale for a fun, romantic, relaxing weekend. the westgate sounded perfect: one of the oldest hotels in san diego, 5 star rating, conveniently located near the gaslamp district.

i booked through the hotel at a rate of $200.00 a night.

valet parking at the hotel was pricey ($22.00 per day) but the valet service was prompt and helpful.

we checked in right at 3:00 pm. i asked if we could have a quiet room on one of the upper floors. the front desk manager informed me in a condescending tone that the westgate is located "in the heart of downtown, not the countryside", so that noise was to be expected. we were given a room on the 6th floor (the hotel has 19 floors). our window view was non-existent, unless you want an unobstructed view of the building next door, which was being remodeled and had a large trash dumpster within plain sight. i called the front desk and asked if we could have another room with a nicer view. i was informed that the hotel was sold out for the weekend, but they would see what they could do. the front desk never called back.

the room itself was very spacious and tastefully decorated. the shower had awesome water pressure. the so-called balcony was a sliver of space which is not even worth mentioning.

the lobby was nothing impressive. kinda drab and old, i was hoping for something elegant.

the location was okay. about 4 blocks to the edge of the gaslamp. right next to the trolley station which was very convenient. but there were a lot of homeless looking types loitering around, which was less prevalent the closer you walked toward the gaslamp.

overall i thought the room was large and comfortable, but at $200 a night that doesn't compensate for the lackluster front desk response, the sketchy location, and the tired lobby.

Plush, elegant, and superb

from stretched2thin
The Westgate must be the most plush, elegant hotel in San Diego. We were extremely impressed and pleased with the accomodations. The entire hotel, but most importantly the rooms were plush, clean, and beautiful. We had a lovely little balcony on the 4th floor, overlooking the 3rd floor fountains and outside lounging areas.

The large glassed shower with seat also had room enough for a bath. The enormous marble vanity allowed plenty of room for primping. The beds were very comfortable. I slept wonderfully. A huge desk was perfect for spreading out paperwork.

When we needed ice, we requested it from room service, and it was delivered promptly. Plenty of floor space for some stretching before we went sightseeing in San Diego.

I highly recommend St. Tropez French bakery across the street at Horton Plaza. We had breakfast there 3 mornings. The quiche, the yogurt parfait, the chocolate croissant, all were wonderful.

The concierge was extraordinary, going way above and beyond expectations.

The only complaint I can think of is that the elevators seemed to take a long time. The air conditioning was out in the spa, so that made my workout more uncomfortable, but tolerable.

The Westgate was Bill Cosby's choice of hotel while we were in town.

a little better than okay

from A TripAdvisor Member
the hotel is nice, very comfortable. i thought the location was pretty good to the convention center (a 10-15 minute walk with the trolley right outside). hotel was clean and quiet (though we were on the 17th floor). rooms somewhat small, huge bathroom, but very little storage space/closet space (no dresser). biggest problem was front desk: they did not give me my wake up call one morning, then made a half-attempt at driving me to the convention center to make up for it. several of the people there were pretty clueless in general. bottom line is: follow up on anything that involves the front desk (including setting the alarm clock in your room!). if you leave a key for someone, make SURE the person at the front desk writes it down, make sure you know what you're supposed to be charged, etc. but overall the room itself, location were good for san diego.

Hotel and Restaurant Top Notch!

from A TripAdvisor Member
My husband and I stayed one night for a romantic getaway on March 5th (We have four kids and needed a little break!) We rode the Amtrack train from Fullerton and were able to easily walk the few blocks to the hotel. This was nice because it saved us the $22 valet charge. Our room was beautiful and very clean. The evening turndown with chocolates, fresh ice, and a mat by the bed to put our feet on was wonderful. Though others have said their room was noisy, I did not have a problem. The location is great because we were able to walk across the street to Horton Plaza for shopping (Nordstrom, Macy's ect.) and our morning Starbucks. Be aware that the deli is not open on the weekend and there was no afternoon tea service due to weddings booked for that weekend (the only two inconveniences for us). The concierge was VERY helpful when we asked about room service (she assured us we could order off both hotel restaurant's menu's and have the food delivered for a romantic evening in, and even went so far as to have the menus delivered to our room while we were out shopping). That evening I called Le Fontainebleau to ask about the menu because my husband and I were wearing jeans and did not want to "dress" for dinner. Despite our lack of formal attire the hostess warmly invited us down to the dining room and thoughtfully gave us a table near the entrance so we would not have to walk across the room in jeans. The incredible service was only surpassed by the amazing food! The chateaubriand and souffle dessert were the best and we were not treated any differently than the other patrons, despite the fact that we were not dressed up. We plan to attend the Sunday Brunch on our next visit. One other reviewer hit the nail on the head when he said the service was five star, but the attitude was never snobby or stuffy. I loved this hotel and would return again for a little "luxury" getaway without hesitation.

Loved the Westgate

from LookingforAdvice
The Westgate is the finest hotel I have ever had the privilege of staying in. It by far exceeded all of my expectations!! I have to admit the formality of this hotel is above what I am use to, but I did not feel out of place or uncomfortable. The employees were all very polite and accommodating. Most of the negitive reviews on trip advisor are in reference to the restaurants or Tea Time. We did not eat at the Westgate, so I can't comment on that.

The airport shuttle service was quick and convenient. We had no problems checking in or out. I was a little disappointed with the view from our room; it was on the 12th floor and faced an office building right across the street. I called the front desk and they offered to let us move the next day, but by that time we had settled in. We didn't spend much time in our room during the day, so the view didn't matter much. I have to admit it was a little noisy, but I think it would be noisy anyplace you stay downtown. There were a lot of sirens throughout the night. The rooms were very nice and the bed comfortable. We stayed for 6 nights and really appreciated the closet and drawer space. It was nice to put things away instead of living out of a suitcase for that long. All the extra little amenities are what makes this place so special. Each evening when we returned to the hotel, our bed would be turned down with a chocolate for each of us. There would be fresh ice and glasses set out. The room was cleaned twice daily.

The trolley and bus service is very convenient, although you can walk to most downtown locations. It is situated close to the convention center, gaslamp district, marina, seaport village, shopping, dining, etc.

They were very helpful in recommending places to eat, activities, and helping us plan our transportation throughout the week.

I did quite a bit of comparing rates for staying at the Westgate. I found the best price at ----- and paid $215 per night (including tax). Although, our travel companions were given a cheeper rate quote at the front desk.

This hotel is definitely a 5-star hotel!
